    On the amon thing. Throughout the series it's suggested that amon wasn't just a random demon but an actual big deal. So i just kinda assumed that he ran into the name while researching demons. He wanted his friend to be strong enough to defeat all demons so he needed to give him the power of the strongest possible demon. Although i guess the series never really implied there was like demon lore you could study to figure that out either.

    • @Pan_Z
      @Pan_Z Před 4 lety +9

      That's the best explanation I've heard. Problem is Crybaby never presented Ryo having that kind of knowledge. We know he was studying demons, but not that Ryo knew certain demons by name and powers.

    • @i010001
      @i010001 Před 4 lety +7

      @@Pan_Z I mean, that's a lot of what real-world demonology is though. A lot of the most famous books on demons - such as the Dictionnaire Infernal and Ars Goetia - are essentially giant lists of various demons and their powers.
      Amon in particular has this entry in the Ars Goetia:
      "The Seventh Spirit is Amon. He is a Marquis great in power, and most stern. He appeareth like a Wolf with a Serpents tail, vomiting out of his mouth flames of fire; but at the command of the Magician he putteth on the shape of a Man with Dog's teeth beset in a head like a Raven; or else like a Man with a Raven's head (simply). He telleth all things Past and to Come. He procureth feuds and reconcileth controversies between friends. He governeth 40 Legions of Spirits. "
      ...Even discounting that, Amon is a particularly famous demon that shows up in a lot of places

    I figured the whole "Amon" things was Ryo/Satan regaining his memories. The later episode "Know Thyself" is triggered mostly by him remembering this specific event and then wondering why he even said it.
    I also think elements like this and the re-creation of the world in the epilogue are supposed to references to the "time-loop" that was introduced in Devilman Lady and referenced somewhat in Violence Jack. Like Satan is unconsciously recreating the events of a past loop without even fully realizing why.

      *Dire Thunders your Waifu totally agree, surprised he didn't notice there's an entire sequence explaining the 'Amon, now your chance!' scene even after watching the series twice and asking multiple people for an explanation of the scene, even though it's explained in a very pivotal moment of the series.

      I know I’m really late (I only watched it last week, and holy fuck did I love it), but I chalked the “Amon! Nows your chance!” scene as Ryo subconsciously performing that act without even realizing he did it. Satan was creeping through the cracks of Ryo that started after the scientist/his father died. Idk, that’s just me

    Hope you all enjoy the new video. I'm pretty late on this one, but I still wanted to get my thoughts out there in a video. Currently, I'm working on another big video that I hope to get out in the next few days, so stay tuned for that. As always, this channel has no ads on any of its videos. Besides, even if I wanted to, I couldn't put ads on this video due to how much gore and nudity is in it. Same with my last Devilman video. I could censor all of this stuff to prevent an age-restriction, but I just refuse on principle. If you really want to support these videos, throw something my way on Patreon. HyperBitHero Dude you missed a major scene for ryo.
      Making Akira a Devilman was part of his subconscious plan. Satan knew Amon so he lured him out. He realized this when heaven attacks earth and he say “this wasn’t part of the plan.”
      Also unlike the ova there was no ancient war between heaven and demons. It’s a time loop. Heaven destroys earth and resets civilization.
      Satan is reborn every time to suffer the same fate.

    I utterly adored this show when it came out of nowhere with such confidence and energy whilst modernizing the story in interesting ways. Sure it’s definitely not perfect and needed more context and development but I’m just thankful we got an adaptation that covered the story from beginning to end. That and the soundtrack/score is impeccable.

  • @eastull
    @eastull Před 6 lety +3

    For me, Crybaby felt a lot more like an art film than a piece of pop culture, which is less a judgement of quality and more of presentation and content. A good amount of the art films I've seen have things like plot and character and even the simple idea of quality as their lowest priority and just kind of charge ahead with whatever content will break boundaries or contribute to their message or just enforce their mood or style, and that's very much what Crybaby felt like, a piece about mood and style and pushing boundaries; if I had to guess what the thesis statement for all of that was, it was probably to try and be as daring and shocking in the modern day with modern audiences as the original was back in the day.
    Just about the closest I ever came to feeling An Emotion™ that involved Connecting™ to a character was during Miki's death, just because she came SO CLOSE to MAYBE making it, and her voice actress earned her [insert Japanese equivalent of an Oscar here] with that fucking SCREAM. I ended up sort of enjoying the weird deviations and circling back around to original plot points, because in the service of this being a piece less about plot and character and more about mood and style, it sort of reinforced the mood of absolute hopelessness- it was like the characters and even the world itself were trying desperately to twist into a different shape that could get them to a less tragic end but Fate kept pushing them down the same roads no matter what they did.
    If I had to give a thesis statement to this fucking essay of a comment, it's that I found this video fascinating because I enjoyed the show for all the reasons it frustrated you simply because we were either looking for or stumbling upon different things from it.

    Finally someone who talks about the flaws of Crybaby and doesn't call it a Masterpiece, don't get me wrong i loved it, but is it perfect, far from that, you pointed out how Ryo calls out for Amon even though he has amnesia, i 100% agree with you and even if you try to use the psychogenny argument, like you said, it won't feel right, when i finshed the show i said to myself "wow, this was really good" but deep inside i knew that there is definitely a lot of plotholes if i dig deeper and rewatched the whole thing, i tackled the first OVA and it was at that moment i realised "ok, i was completely biased when i watched Crybaby" the sabbath scene is like the biggest example i can think of when it comes to inconsistencies and you know why, for the art direction, i think it depends whether you like it or not, i don't have a problem with it (inb4 ryo's terrible drawing when he tells akira to come with him) but like you, i found that the OVA was superior, is it tied to budget? probably but it deserves to be criticized nonetheless , i mean looking at the sabbath scene from the OVA it allows for more dynamic action and the colors are just **mwah**👌, really enjoyed your vid and your opinion about Crybaby, it was a breath of fresh air to see someone sheds some light about the flaws, i really respect you, keep up the good work ❤

    It isn't his goodness that puts a stop to Amon's takeover, it's his iron will, his goodness is what motivates him.
    I was one of those kids that cried whenever I felt a strong emotion up to highschool, most often when angered by something I felt was unfair, and even in a couple of fights, so I had no trouble at all believing Akira might be the same.
    Psycho Jenny was Rio's assistant before he reconnected with Akira, and comes to Akira with the intent to show to the world that demons exist. I hadn't seen or read any Devilman before this, and I felt he was "the real bad guy" the second he pulled a gun on the punks at the dock.

    Though I understand why you've chosen this as a Your Next Favorite, as you've literally explained yourself, I still think the video may have functioned better as a straight-up review. Not to say it was a bad video, and your criticism really hits home some of the problems I also had with Ryo after comparing with the manga. Idk maybe the choice of a 'Your Next Favorite' was inappropriate for the structure of the video, and I feel you could have said more or gone into more detail with a more conventional review video. Anyway I still enjoyed hearing your opinion on the new Devilman and look forward to new content.

    But I do remember the show addressing one of the flaws you listed.
    :SPOILERS AHEAD:
    Later in like an Episode or two before Ryo reveals he's Satan, they do reference when Ryo called out to Amon to possess Akira. Ryo was having strange memories and thought back to that incident, wondering why he had called out to Amon and how he could have possibly knew his name.
    Also, I've never seen the original, so in the first episode when he calls out to Amon to possess Akira, I figured he may have known about him through his studies of demons. Later on, it's shown that nearly every demon knows of Amon, so that only supported my theory oon that.

    We know that The world of crybaby is cyclical and that events repeat. I think that's meant to partially explain why characters sometimes mention things they shouldn't know. The way I interpreted Ryo mentioning Amon's name during the rave scene was that a part of his Satan memories were unconsciously brought forth. Later on, when he's doing his detective work and returns to the scene of the rave, he starts to realize something's up and remembers mentioning Amon by name. This is similar to a scene we're repeatedly taken back to: when young Akira and Rio are standing in the rain over the deceased cat. Ryo is telling Akira not to cry and Akira responds with "you were crying too." We as the audience know that this isn't the case, and Ryo hasn't cried at any point in the show. It isn't until the very end, where Ryo cries over Akira's body, that we understand. Much like Ryo remembering Amon's name, Akira was somehow able to unconsciously, vocally express the memory of Ryo crying during the end of the world (when he was technically dead, no less). It's still pretty contrived but I guess it almost makes sense to me haha

    Crybaby was very good, but I agree with you on a lot.
    BIG ENDING SPOILERS
    They made Satan way too unsympathetic. I hated him so much by the time episode 10 came about, which was excellent, but the way the story was going meant there wasn't any catharsis. In the original, there's a tragedy in that he realises he became what he hated. In Crybaby, it's just melodrama where he cries over Akira; that made me angry. Why make us hate a character, with zero redeeming qualities, and then expect us to feel sad for him? I know this story is a tragedy but this is a mismatch of catharsis the original didn't struggle with.
    That said, I love everything they did with Miki in this iteration. You can call her one dimensional, but it was a dimension the show's tone needed. I was touched by her reconciliation with Miko since it felt earned. You can totally buy that she's the presence that keeps Akira hopeful no matter what else happens to him. She was a delight on screen, her online post scene was fantastic, and episode 9 just breaks me up in side, way more so than the original's events. I just wanted her and Akira to be happy, man; I'd have accepted losing the rest of humanity so long as they were alright. But this is a tragedy, isn't it?

    Wasn't one of the viable reasons for these plotholes or inconsistency that satan was trapped by god and forced to experience different versions of lives where he kills the one person he loves. I just thought this was one of those dreams considering satan is the last one standing in crybaby. I think they explain this in devil lady.

    While I did like it I do feel like the battle with Jinman was abit meh compared to the OVA, though they do a good job with recapturing the unnerving nature of his shell, unlike with the Grimoire manga which with one panel kinda comes off more like a Cannibal Corpse cover. It's still cool though, don't get me wrong, and the art is nice but with one bit it feels like it's trying too hard and makes me laugh instead of feeling "nope, nope, nope". There are very few things that creep me out but dammit, that big demonic turtle, with his screaming shell, is up there.

    Regarding the point you made about Ryo, my own explanation is a little contrived itself but I think it makes sense. Fair warning massive spoilers and all that *jazz* leggo.
    In real life and in the context of crybaby, the Sabbath is understood to have massive demonic influence, such that it became almost unanimously associated with Satanism. It's entirely possible that, while in the Sabbath, Ryo was unconsciously tapping into Satan. How he knew Amon's name I like to think of like this; Satan is known to be the king of, if not the most powerful demon in this universe. If we understand Satan as a king, it's entirely possible that Satan knows Amon's name and knew that this was how you draw him out. Does that turn it into a Satanis (heh) Ex Machina? Totally, but it at least explains one of the more contrived parts of the show at least for me

    I totally agree with this review. I must confess that I never read the manga or saw Devilman's OVAs. But I enjoy anime, and everything that I like (Berserk, Evangelion, blabla) has some kind of inspiration that came from Devilman. In short, though I did not know the original work, you can feel there was some points that was off, like Xenon (who was he, why did he wanna fight Devilman, thankfully this video has answered this question) or where the hell came Psycho Jenny (figure out latter that she was the secretary). I guess 2 or 3 more episodes would flash out better these matters for me, but I also have issues with the animation, specially the fight scenes, which I found they are way too dark. Some people might say this wasn't the focus of the director, but IMHO, if you wanna do something, do it right.
    Nonetheless... Great video, as always!

    Having watched the OVAs and read the manga beforehand on your recommendation, I came out of Crybaby not really feeling the _hype_. Aside from the technical ways that it just can't compare to the OVAs, I'm not stoked about the plot. Specifically how nuts everything that has to do with Ryo is now, how poorly some stuff is communicated and how over the top certain characters act. It's also nowhere near as good of a Yuasa show as what Ping Pong the Animation was, so while I'd say it's above average, I kinda have a hard time recommending it personally.
    I'm definitely with you on the OVAs though, they're great, and I'm glad you recommended them to me so I got to experience a version of this story I really like this year.

    After watching the first episode on a whim, I remember being apprehensive about wanting to continue. It just seemed like some exploitation show in the form of anime. After doing some light research on the source material, and even reading up on the show and it’s ending (not a detailed synopsis, mind you), it then gave me a reason to watch more just to satiate my morbid curiosity. It has faults, as you pointed out, but I still found myself liking Devilman: Crybaby as it neared the end. As convoluted as it is, I found that it made the title of “Crybaby” make sense within the context of the show itself. Especially with that last scene between Akira and Ryu.

    I always just assumed that Ryo knew about Amon during his study of demons in South America with the other Professor. He knew he was one of, if not, the most powerful demon and had hoped that Akira would be able to overpower his spirit to create the Devilman for his own purposes. Admittedly, this had never been much of a problem for me and I have not given it much thought.

    I knew nothing about Devilman (except for that live action movie) when my friend showed me Crybaby. I liked Akira and Ryu's designs and even the art style grew on me, especially in the last few episodes. But BOY the story of the first five to six episodes was SO DAMN MESSY x.x Reading the manga afterwards really helped me to get the story straight. I just don't understand why Crybaby didn't go with the much easier-to-follow-exposition from the manga >.>

    So, Mr BitHero, are you still doing those "Devious Intent" videos? If you are, could you maybe do a video on one of the Bayonetta villains? So either Balder, Loptr/Aesir or the Angels of Paradiso.
    Pls?

    I hope youtube doesn't take this down because of nudity, but I agree a lot of the hiccups are there. When I watched the first 3 eps I hated it because I felt like it was awful animation but then I was like the techniques are there so they know what they're doing. After a while it kinda stuck with me and I justified it by saying "Well there already are so many well done ovas they wanted to do it in an original art style" Also fuck ep 9 "let's all hug devilman" scene. It was clearly rushed and I wish they expanded on the other track character who goes good and then bad again. I love what they did with Miko and the rappers I think they're a great addition and the butterfly rap was wonderful. There's even a little short scene where the rapper and miko go to a rave so she can become a demon and when he's given drugs he doesn't take them and puts it in his pocket. It's a little detail but it shows he's a good boy and only wants to make miko happy by taking her there even if he doesn't like that stuff. Idk if you caught that or not.
    Anyway glad to see a new video dude :) always love the work u put in.

    So your critique on the animation is literally how Misaaki Yuasa's style is. It's very controversial but he's always gone for the simplistic ugly approach. I mean look at his masterpiece Kemonozume and even Ping Pong. The only anime that has a far more consistent style, not counting his movies, was Tatami Galaxy but even that enjoyed the ugly animation and plain background at times. It's just his style and I love it but I can totally understand why it wouldn't work for people. I personally love it. It has less to do with the budget though he works wonders with low budget.

    I thought the implication was that Ryo wasn't amnesiac in Crybaby at all. There is no scene of him regaining memories before he 'betrays' humanity like in the manga, he knew perfectly well what he was doing during the Sabbath and even had Psychogenie as his right hand at all times. The entire story of how he "found out" about demons is just bullshit to feed Akira so he won't ask questions.

    Crybaby the kind of presentation, where I felt the flaws contrasted with the good in such a way where the good parts shone all the brighter. Almost as if the jarring and confusing aspects were created to make it all the more enthralling.
