There’s plenty of upside to the collapse of the record industry of the 20th century, but here’s one thing we may never see again: a legit band like this being given the money to spend 8 months straight in the best studios in the world to make a grandiose double concept record.
Anyone can make a record now, but there’s a reason Mellon Collie sounds the way it does. It’s not just the four brilliant artists (you see it in this video); there’s a team of talented and trained people working in their favour, in a very well-equipped and expensive space, making this happen.
I’m just glad it did. A friend told me something that I quote often: [as an artist and human being] Be thankful that you live in a universe where you had Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness to listen to as a teenager...

Jellybelly, F.U. and Ode to No One, Tribute to Johnny Winter, Muzzle, Porcelina of the Vast Oceans, Tales of a Scorched Earth, and Thru the Eyes of Ruby, and Set the Ray to Jerry, were my favorite drum songs from that time period. In particular, the intro and outro, for Jellybelly, and the drum fill before the guitar solo for Fuck You. Coolest bass-line goes to the mid-section of Tribute to Johnny.

Matt Kaz times changed, music has changed. Not selling out but making music to fit the new generation in the alt form. Not saying the other band members from the beginning had nothing to do with it but I’d say that music 20+ years ago was just different then what people put out now and that’s a big reason why people feel this way that the quality isn’t there. But no matter what Corgan is still a great songwriter who contributed the most, which him thinking that and others led to the original bands down fall. Which I’m with you though their albums of the 90’s kicked ass compared to what has been released since the beginning of the new millennium.

You can tell why Billy decided to go with the cue ball look, that hair was thinning fast. The stress of trying to top Kurt Cobain, I suppose. Though for my money, I always thought Billy was the superior songwriter/musician.

I can understand that. For me were both great, maybe (for me) Cobain tops him a little bit, but definitley Corgan is way better than many musicians of the 90s generation. Better than most grunge rockstars were around for me. One fo the best composers of that era, and in popular music in general.

i think most of the band in that era were not interested on having a tuner pedal ( which in this video billy is using a rack mounted tuner which visibly at his back guiding him ). i do remember hearing kurt cobain using this method to drop D his guitar on stage ( he always use this method whenever he wanted to play Blew )

Ever notice how the Smashing Pumpkins were almost the exact opposite of every band of that era? Nirvana and Pearl Jam were all about shying away from fame and the spotlight and yet the Pumpkins seemed like they couldn’t get enough of it. While Nirvana was into bringing noise rock to the forefront Smashing Pumpkins were more melodic with romantic lyrics.
