So insightful! The tempo is absolutely what got played in those 7th grade boy/girl school dances. Additionally the guitar is made to sound like those pre teen jumps you get when your voice is changing ... so embarrassing, so iconic.
Samba Pa Ti - My all-time favorite Santana song. Fairly easy to learn to play, my smile went from ear to ear when I became able to play it. Mastering it, though, is a different story. Yeah, I love Carlos! P.S. Michael makes a point that I've noticed over the years regarding Santana, that the 2nd string melodies are favored heavily by Carlos.

Notice the way Carlos handles his pick. It's a big triangle and one point is sticking out between his index and middle fingers - perhaps for added stability? Plus, he holds the pick - at least part of the time - with his thumb and middle finger, rather than his thumb and index finger.

I really love the way you break everything down and make it seem so simple and in some ways it is, but in some ways it's not. It takes a true understanding of theory and and comprehension of music in order to order to truly break down songs and figure out what our favorite Musicians are doing. You need to cover some Peter Green Fleetwood Mac. "Oh Well", "albatross", "Man of the World", "Green Manalishi", "Black Magic Woman". Classic. What great touch he had!
Carlos can play the blues in a totally delta tone. His first band played the blues. He really can play outside that fingerprint, and very beautifully. But you will have a hard time finding video of it. He gives the people Santana , cause thats what they want. Really enjoy your analysis.
1974. my mother had a big console stereo with an instrument input and headphone output. i'd plug my guitar in and spend many, many, many, did i say many?, hours sitting on the floor learning every nuance of that tune. still one of my favorites. of course this version has evolved from the original.

Awesome channel and guitarrist. Carlos Santana was saved by music. He was a heroin adddict in mexico city his birthplace. Music was his way out of the streets and to this day he is clean and a living legend. That is one story right there.

It seems that, since this was released originally in 1970, that the songwriter of "Wishing on a Star" Billie Rae Calvin stole/used that melody Santana played here several times. Pretty much note for note.

if you listen to early Peter Green, I would say he took that style, not taking anything away from heim, but I would say that was his influence.

The studio version, for the album "Abraxas" is the best IMHO. It has fewer ad libs. Its the one in the CD player in my car - on auto-repeat.
