This is from the Disney movie. The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Geoff is the minister of the Church and he is lusting sinfully after the gypsy Esmeralda.

"Maria" is a version of the name Mary, the mother of Jesus. The opening lines of the song, "Beata Maria", would translate as "Blessed Mary". Esmerelda is the "gypsy girl" Frollo (Geoff's character) is lusting after. He's so deep into his obsession that it's the old "if I can't have you, nobody can!" of a controlling personality. Frollo is often considered one of the most despicable (because he's more true-to-life) villains in any Disney movie.

@@KaireemReactions If you ever watch "Hunchback of Notre Dame" now as an adult, you might be shocked at how mature it is. It was controversial when it first came out; in fact, the Southern Baptist Church boycotted it. British parents got mad at the dark villain song with themes of lust and wouldn't take kids to see it. The composer, Alan Menken (who has composed the music from Little Mermaid to Frozen) was actually the one who picked "Hunchback" out of a lineup of projects to be Disney's next project, PRECISELY because he wanted THIS SONG. When the singer, Tony Jay, couldn't hit the final high note and asked Alan Menken to take it down, he said "NO" and made Tony take voice lessons until he could hit the note and sustain it.
And here's Geoff, belting it and then saying "Nah, I'm going HIGHER!"

I actually went and watched the Hunchback of Notre Dame for the first time in ages because I didn't remember enough of it after so long.
The movie makes a much different impression as an adult than it did watching it as a child.
    OMG Frollo is truly evil.

It stands in the beginning of the description of that video. It's the villain's song from the Disney movie "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". Notre Dame (French for "our lady" = Maria, the mother of Jesus) is a big cathedral in Paris (France). The villain is a high-ranking clergyman in the cathedral who, despite his vow of chastity, desires a gypsy woman. It's a quite dark story for a Disney movie, but the original, the novel "Notre-Dame de Paris. 1482" published 1832 by the French author Victor Hugo is even darker. And in opposite to Disney's version it has no happy ending.

No, he Frollo is the minister of Norte Dame and he is one of the most evil villains that Disney has put in a movie. He wants Esmarelda and she has done nothing wrong but he believes she's bewitched him. Maria is Mary father of Jesus. It's a frightening song if you listen to those words.

It;s from Disney film The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I loved it when Geoff is singing God have mercy on her, God have mercy on me. The background vocals are singing Kyrie Eleison which translates as God have mercy. Cesar did a great air guitar w/ vocals just before the guard comes in (He's Tony Wakim of Pattycake Productions. Minister Frollo is a very wicked man, wants the gypsy and if he can't have her, he'll burn her as a witch.

Here's the basic story: In the book and Disney cartoon movie, of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, first shown almost 40-50 years ago, they tell a story of how the hunchback, who rang the bells of the fabled Cathedral of "Our Lady" (Mary), or "Notra Dame" in Paris, (and was himself a reject of society), helped save a gypsy girl, who was being threatened by a mob. He took her into the church where she took refuge, and in those days, no one could touch anyone who was hiding in a church/cathedral, for safety...probably the only safe place some could go in those days! But unfortunately, the Minister of Justice, Frollo, saw her, young, beautiful, and innocent, and fell instantly in lust for her...(probably not a new feeling for him, I suspect!)...He was planning to seduce her when she escaped the cathedral and him, and he was insanely angry to lose his chance to have her as his own...And this song, so very un-Disney-like, is what the Minister Frollo sings after learning Esmeralda has escaped him left her sanctuary, and gone far away...from him. It's an exciting, if unusual story for Disney...Anyway, Voice Play, once again, have made a masterpiece from an old movie song...How do they continue to do this?....Every time they release anything, no matter what, it is more complex, more beautifully performed, and more enjoyable...they are truly amazing...!

It's been ages since I've watched the movie, can't say it was one of my favorites. Such dark intentions for a Disney movie. Thanks for the reaction!!

If you want to check out more acapella bands, you should look up Van Canto, who are doing metal acapella songs most of the time, like Sabaton's Primo Victoria, Metallica's Master of Puppets along with others Manowar's Kings of Metal just to name of their covers.
Or alternatively you could check out the german band Wise Guys who mostly are doing songs in german with usually funny lyrics far as I know, like Mein Nachbar is ein Zombie or Deutsche Bahn (translations: my neighbour is a zombie and German Rail - or something like that as Deutsche Bahn is the name of the german railway company).

You got pretty close by the end! If you'd Googled Paris and cathedral it would have turned up Notre Dame, and you might have been able to put it together from there. The religious references in the song weren't just there as metaphor or for flavor; the point of view character considered himself devout and was literally praying to Mary to help him resist temptation (which was probably the first real prayer he'd ever said in his life, and he failed miserably at it. The guy was a scumbag.)
