      Just a 26yo recovered addict, but as soon as I saw the first clip ignited from the back, I knew it had to be optimal, as the potato will leave as soon as it is pushed with enough pressure, and trying to increase the burn rate will not change the fact that there is a K(constant ratio) forcing the potato out, and increased pressure will have almost no impact on that besides backburn

    Great Video! Like Dustin said, "There's multiple PhD dissertations in a potato gun." Built one for my high schooler to teach concept of stoichiometry and soon learned that I was also teaching pressure-volume-temperature lessons. We started with hair spray, but that didn't really teach the concepts, so we moved to propane as fuel. We built a "metering device" to deliver just the right amount of propane (4% in air, or 20% in pure oxygen) for our 4" x 48" PVC combustion chamber. We also added a brushless 12v computer fan to mix the propane/air mixture prior to ignition. To standardize our potato weights and shape, we cut them all 5" long and "cored" them into our 1-1/2" x 60" PVC barrel. Our original design used only one BBQ ignitor spark centered in the combustion chamber. Inclined at 45 degrees, our potatoes averaged 138 yards. Hypothesizing more sparks, means more burning wave fronts, faster pressure build up, and further distance, we increased the number to 2, 3, 4, 5 sparks evenly spaced w/in our 48" long combustion chamber. We averaged 157 yards w/ 2 spark points, 174 yards with 3 sparks, 180 yards with 4 sparks, and no further improvement with 5 sparks. Finally we purchased a rifled 1-1/2" x 60" PVC barrel online. That added nearly 100 yards to our distances!!! We averaged 266 yards with 4% propane/air, 4 spark points, and rifled barrel. Needless to say: Hearing protection is a must! Too scared to try 20% propane + pure oxygen in a PVC combustion chamber.

    There's a more efficient way that I found as a kid. Instead of loading the potato first, you just get an airtight seal in the muzzle, add your fuel to the chamber (carburetor choke cleaner or starting fluid) and then drive the potato down the barrel increasing the amount of oxegen in the chamber equaling a MUCH greater efficiency and stronger shot

    • @mdexter3722

      TigerLand Paintball I was very surprised that he got that kind of thump out of his cannon doing it this way..? I just made some with my boys and we spray first then pressurize the chamber, like you said. Now on the hunt for the transparent piping...!

    • @bradleyland
      @bradleyland Před 5 lety +47

      The downside of this method is that you lose significant fuel atomization as the fuel condenses on the sides of the combustion chamber while you're loading. The effect of the compression you achieve by putting the potato in last is minimal compared to the loss of fuel atomization. Optimal combustion chamber to barrel volume is around 2:1 for most fuels, so if you cram the entire volume of the barrel into the combustion chamber, you've achieved a compression ratio of less than 1:1. Fuel atomization and air/fuel ratio play a much larger part in performance.

    My hand feels a phantom pain every time you fire the gun with your hand on the back. Brings back memories of when I tried using engine starter fluid and pure oxygen which blew off the end cap and injured my hand. But I am thinking that the flame front is compressing the gas but not igniting it so it would be better to add some stuff to the gun, like balls of copper wire, to break up the wave front and allow a more rapid combustion.

    When I was a kid I used to explode empty plastic bleach bottles by filling them with oxygen + acetylene from a torch. In order to get the perforce proportions of oxygen to acetylene I did the following.
    1. Fill the bleach bottle full with water.
    2. Fill a washtub with 4 inches of water.
    3. Light the torch and adjust the flame for a perfect burn.
    4. Press the torch tip to the pavement to extinguish the flame.
    5. Invert the bleach bottle in the washtub so that it was still full of water.
    6. Put the torch into the mouth of the bleach bottle so that the oxygen + acetylene mixture displaced the water in the bottle.
    6. When the bottle is empty of water and full of the perfect combustion mix, cap the bottle.
    This left me with a one gallon plastic bottle exactly full of combustible gas. Not acetylene + air but acetylene + oxygen.
    So I'd love to see you do something similar with your transparent potato gun and show is the slo-mo of that combustion event. But I'm not sure you should be holding the gun when you light it off. I used thin plastic bottles so that they did not generate any dangerously sharp shrapnel. :) Even as a kid doing stupid things, I was careful about safety.

      Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started. Wait...

      Neanderthals developed tools,
      We built a wall (we built the pyramids),
      Math, science, history, unraveling the mystery,
      That all started with the big bang (Bang)!
      "Since the dawn of man" is really not that long,
      As every galaxy was formed in less time than it takes to sing this song.
      A fraction of a second and the elements were made.
      The bipeds stood up straight,
      The dinosaurs all met their fate,
      They tried to leap but they were late
      And they all died (they froze their asses off)
      The oceans and Pangaea
      See ya wouldn't wanna be ya
      Set in motion by the same big bang!
      It all started with the big BANG!
      It's expanding ever outward but one day
      It will pause and start to go the other way.
      Collapsing ever inward, we won't be here, it won't be heard
      Our best and brightest figure that it'll make an even bigger bang!
      Australopithecus would really have been sick of us
      Debating how we're here, they're catching deer (we're catching viruses)
      Religion or astronomy (Encarta Deuteronomy)
      It all started with the big bang!
      Music and mythology, Einstein and astrology
      It all started with the big bang!
      It all started with the big... BANG!

This was mainly because if the cap fails or the sparker fails, you just replace the cap, rather than the entire cannon, plus I didn't feel safe drilling holes in the chamber for fear of creating a weak point considering how much of a thump these create.

    2 things. 1) Chamfer the end of the barrel slightly so that it compresses the potato as you load it (use the barrel to cut the potato. 2) Use less fuel. If you hit a slightly rich stoichiometry your deflagration rate will increase. When you load the potato, just insert it into the end. Then add fuel. After capping, push the potato down which will compress the gas and air mixture making the deflagration rate even faster. Ignite it quickly as the pressure will have a tendency to escape. This of course, assumes you have a well sealed combustion chamber. You'll be surprised at the difference it makes.

    I made one of these with a friend for a 6th grade science project in 1997. We told our parents we were making a potato gun and they were like "Aww, okay sweetie". Me and my buddy used our lunch money that we had saved up and ended up using two screws through a 3" chamber with a piezoelectric BBQ ignitor and cap mounted striker ignition on two different models and tested them with three different brands of hairspray at the same inclination to figure out what was the best combustion method and fuel and measured how far the projectiles traveled before impact. We both got suspended and could not compete because our presentation used the word "gun" lol.
    Btw, piezoelectric middle-mounted wood screws with aquanet hairspray worked best.

    @Kram1032 Před 8 lety +66

    Ok so this probably is silly but what happens when you ignite:
    - "in the front" (so on the end of the chamber closest to the potato)
    - in multiple spots at the same time (back/center, back/front, front/center, back/front/center)
    - in an oxygen-enriched environment (for the extra danger)
    - after preheating the walls (to presumably make the combustion more efficient - this will take a lot of modification to work though)
    - if you add turbulences to mix the air (is there a small electric fan you could use in the chamber, which would survive the combustion? - this might act similarly to preheating, making combustion more efficient.)

    • @Kram1032
      @Kram1032 Před 8 lety +1

      I doubt front would be particularly effective. It'd probably have too little time to properly expand before starting to push out the potato or it might even have to rebound once, losing energy in the process, before it can move the potato at all.
      Still, for completeness' sake it would be interesting to see.

      @Cronuz2 Před 8 lety +5

      Would ripples (like on a golf ball) on the inside make the mixture move differently?

    • @Kram1032
      @Kram1032 Před 8 lety +2

      Different profiles or shapes in general would also be nice! Perhaps a sphere with a cone on one end , where the ignition is roughly at the sphere's center, would provide more oompf towards the potato end. It certainly would mean a lover surface area compared to the chamber volume which, I think, would mean a smaller region in which the gas would be cooled by the walls.
      And a golf-ball like skin might provide turbulence which, on one hand, would take a little bit of the energy out of the explosion but if, on the other hand, that means it's better mixed, the fuel might be burned more efficiently, overally giving a boost.

Every time you halve the speed, you drop the frequency content by an octave. It doesn't take very many halvings until you have dropped the sound out of the human audible spectrum.

    I read an interesting article a while back about the efficiency of homogeneous mixtures versus heterogeneous mixtures in diesel cylinders. The author initially guessed that a homogeneous mixture of fuel and air would provide a better burn for increased power and efficiency. In his research, he discovered that he was quite wrong, and that the extended burn generated by the heterogeneous mixture provided considerably more power over the length of the cylinder stroke. Watching the two burns in this video reminds me of the results he was getting. The pressure in the rear-ignition firing seems very linear. I'd be curious to see what the difference in velocities is.

      exactly. i already knew all this because i am such a smart cookie but it would be super great to do moore research on it. he is using a too rich mixture. it is also a fast burning airosol. the peak pressure should be when the potato is in the middle of the barrel or rather the wave and pressure should be tuned to have the greatest sustained pressure when the projectile is at the end of acceleration. it may also be usefull to mix water in the fuel to slow the combustion down like some people do with cars. something like spiritus with water should work great. i wish i had access to pvc and a high speed camera and i wasnt so lazy then i would be shooting all day and night.

      100% agree. Freebooters are lame. Destin rocks. The watermark doesn't detract from the beauty or the learning. It's sad he has to do it, but I totally get it. If it came from someone else besides Destin, I might think it was lame, gratuitous marketing. But frankly Destin has taught me to see it a whole new way, and if anyone has the humility and good judgment to make wise choices about things like that, it's him.

    the back flint combustion is not more efficient than the middle one, but the explosion from the back pushes all the unburnt fuel out of the barrel while the middle combustion gets the unburnt half to the blocked end to be stuck and thus burning after the tube reventilates..
    this can show you how much fuel you are wasting on your experiment and you can use it to figure out what the optimum amount of fuel to use

    • @littlesnowflakepunk855
      @littlesnowflakepunk855 Před 7 lety +11

      +Piggiebits Official We have plenty of lethal plasmas, just not a way to produce a seemingly infinite amount of it, nor contain it in a psuedo-solid blade, nor a way to keep the hilt cool while emmitting two feet of extremely hot plasma. Soooo

    • @denzelfarmer5393

    • @littlesnowflakepunk855
      @littlesnowflakepunk855 Před 7 lety

      Denzel Farmer Plasma isn't particularly dense, so you could just use compressed xenon or something. And once you figure out how to contain it in a particular area, you wouldn't need much of it. Batteries would run out pretty quick, though.
