- I have finished a portion of the scenery on the layout. It still needs a few details to finish it off.

I'm very impressed with the results. You have depicted the area of southwest very good. Your rocks are great.
Thank you very much! I appreciate the kind words! I have some new scenery that looks much more realistic. I’m going to make an update soon. Thank you for watching!
That is some outstanding scenery there. Picking my jaw up off the floor...
Thank you very much for the compliment! I really do appreciate it.
I think you’re doing an outstanding job. I love desert railroading. It’s obvious you put a lot of work into this layout. Great job.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind words. Thank you for watching my video.
Beautiful work! 😍
Thank you very much I appreciate it!
It's amazing the transformation some scatter and shrubs can make! It looks very impressive. I've been watching your videos from the beginning and I am enjoying your journey.
Thank you so much for the compliment! it is interesting how little scenery products can transform a scene. Also thank you for watching my videos I really appreciate.
Reminds me when I was in Santa Fe and rode the Rail Runner great Landscaping
I’m glad to hear that because that’s the look I was going for. It’s based off the areas near Santa Fe. Thank you! And thank you for watching.
Can't believe you only have only a few subs, don't worry that will definitely change. Great work. Looking forward to seeing more. Keep having fun, Chris
Thank you very much Chris. I appreciate the kind words! There’s more to come!
Very nice work!
Thank you very much.

Thank you Kevin, I really appreciate it! I hope all is well with you and your family as well.
Mate that turned out fantastic! Well done 💯👍
Thank you very much!! I appreciate it!
Wow JT, really impressive work and layout. The only thing I would have done differently is to have you build it in my basement. Lol.
Haha thank you very much! I appreciate that. When I was a kid I wanted to be a professional model railroad builder.
Looks good.
Thank you!
Like you new update today. One to watch.
Thank you very much!
@@modelrailroadingthesouthwest Thank you very much for replying to my comment. I have a new video out now. Hope you like and share.
@@medwaymodelrailway7129 great video. Just watched and commented on it.
Awesome Joe!!!!
Thank you very much Jeff!
@@modelrailroadingthesouthwest You're welcome!!!
I live in Michigan so this is nothing like what we have, almost a different world
That’s what I say when I see other layouts that are from the Eastern US.
Looks awsome! Reminds me of Cajon Pass! 👍
Thank you very much! I appreciate that!
Very nice scene. Looks great. I like the desert idea thanks for sharing David@ low country railroad, new subscriber
Thank you and thank you for the subscription.
It's good, but I struggle with the dirt slides ,they're too similar where nature seems to always be imperfect
Scenery is very impressive. Would LOVE a tutorial video on your rock and landscape techniques, if you're ever down with that.
Thank you very much. I'm actually in the process of making a new series that will be in depth videos showing how to create scenery from bare foam to finished scenery. So that will come out in the near future. Thank you for the compliment and watching my video.
@@modelrailroadingthesouthwest No problem! Look forward to watching it!
have seen many layouts but do you think mountains, rocks look really beautiful. already seen a lot of interesting things for my layout in the future. greetz from belgium
I love mountains and rock formations. I grew up around them and love to model them. Yes there are so many interesting things to model on model railroads. Greetings from the US.
Is the bare spots on the mountain covered in what type of texture sand ? Color? Again looks spot on!
The entire mountain is covered in sand and non-sanded grout. The sand is from an arroyo near my home. You can buy play sand from Home Depot or Lowe’s. If you use sand or dirt that is brought in from outside, you need to bake it in the oven at 350 for about 30 mins. This is to kill all the microorganisms in the sand or soil. You don’t want anything living on your layout haha. The non-sanded grout color is called biscuit. It mix both together to get the color I want. Here is a link to my video showing how I do scenery similar to this including all the products and their names. Thank you for the compliment!

@@modelrailroadingthesouthwest thanks again for the fast reply the most authentic southwestern layout I've seen!
@@johnkelley4874 You’re welcome! Thank you for the kind words. I really appreciate it that.
Nice work - any insight to the brands of paints and colors you used?
I use the brand from Walmart Daler-Rowney Original System 3. I use this paint brand because I believe it has better pigment than the cheaper Apple Barrel paint. The colors I use are black, yellow ocher, raw umber, raw sienna, buff titanium and burnt sienna. I use them as a very thin wash to control the pigment. Thank you so much for the compliment and thank you for watching!
Great work what seasons are showing?
Thank you very much. I’m modeling early Summer.
Keep at it!!!! Good work!!
That looks like the arryo near chochiti
Cool! Im glad it looks somewhat like what’s in NM. Thanks!
@Model Railroading The Southwest I getting ready to start my layout. Let me first say I'm super jealous you have the railrunner lol. I hope you don't mind if I reach out to you? I'm planning on building Albuquerque to Santa fe kinda look. Your work is amazing.
@@albuquerqueaerialimagery6133 Thank you for the compliment! Athearn just released a new run of the Railrunner, both the engine and the cars if you are interested. They are still only available for preorder. Albuquerque to Santa Fe would make for a great looking layout. Gorgeous landscape out there. Yeah check out my channel info for my email if you would like to send an email.
Do you use rock molds? And what kind of sand are you using? Play sand?
I carve the rock myself using Plaster of Paris. I use sand from a driver river bed near my house. I also use beach sand from Arizona Rock and Mineral. I’ve not used play sand but I’m sure it works the same.
What do you use for dirt?
I use sand from an arroyo (dry river bed) near my home. I have also used play sand from Home Depot or Lowes and then I lighten it with unsanded grout. I now buy the beach sand from www.armballast.com they have a ton of different types of dirt, sand and gravel.
@@modelrailroadingthesouthwest Thank you for the detailed response. I Model the Union Pacific in HO Scale and am starting on scenery soon and want the best look I can achieve.
@@therailroadempire7993 Sure, no problem. One thing I will suggest and it might sound crazy; but if you use dirt or sand from your backyard or some where outside, you should bake it in the oven on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for about 30 mins. That is to insure there are no microbes or insects in the dirt when you take it to your layout. The last thing you need is insects burrowing and nesting on your layout or worse inside your home. Also test the dirt or sand that you are going to use by gluing some down on test piece of foam or wood. The reasoning behind that is that dirt from your back yard may look good dry and have the perfect color, but once you wet it and glue it down the color can change and not be what you wanted. So the nice tan colored dirt will now be a dark brown after the glue dries. So if you do decide to use dirt from your back yard that’s where the unsanded grout comes into play. You can add as much or little of the grout to your dirt mixture to make sure you have the color of dirt you want when it’s dry. One thing I’ve noticed is that sand usually stays the same color after it’s been glued down.
What is all the stuff you are using?
Here is a list.
I used sand from a dry creek bed near my home. I learned later to lighten the sand with non sanded grout from Lowes for better realism.
Arizona Rock and Mineral:
• Apache Stone
• Beach Sand
• New York Central Kabab Limestone Ballast
Woodland Scenics:
• Course Turf: Light Green and Burnt Grass
• Underbrush: Light and Olive Green
• Bushes: Olive Green
• Talus: Brown Fine, Medium and Course
@Model Railroading The Southwest thanks! I will be remodeling my layout soon!
@Model Railroading The Southwest al so I forgot to mention where can you get the insulation foam from? and also the paint too? Thanks.
You can get the pink foam from Home Depot or Lowes. It’s going to be cheaper at Home Depot. Lowes will be blue and more expensive. The ground cover paint can be bought at Walmart. It’s really any cheap paint that looks like dirt. The paint for rocks can be found at Walmart too. You can get the Apple Barrel or a little more expensive paint for better coverage.
