Sold a 99 Sentra in 2005. Still on the road 250k miles or so... 2015 Note, 75k and barely limping along. A class action suit and an extended warranty isn't doing much good.

I work for a warranty company and run into this often. We only accept invoices from a shop that show date, mileage, yr, make, model, etc. People want to send in O’reillys receipts showing where oil and a filter were bought ... how do I know it was for that specific car in question? How do I know the date and mileage? Those receipts mean nothing to us.

I bought my 94 Opel Astra F for 500 euros (roughly 500 dollars) and have been driving it for 4 years without any serious problems. I've had to fix a few (non-)issues with the suspension (in order to pass the mandatory vehicle inspection) a year ago but other than that I've7 had to not do anything to it except oil changes and some rust repair. It has almost 300 000 kilometers on it and I've driven almost 70 000 km of it. Best purchase I've ever made. I propably keep it as long as it breaks completely and buy a new 500 euro rust bin.
The timing belt will propably snap soon but I don't bother changing it. When it snaps I propably try to fix the timing myself. If it's too much work I will just tow it to a junk yard.

Chrysler seems to get a bad rap from a lot of people, but I've loved the three vans that I've had. I had a '94 Voyager bought used and I put 100K miles on it, traded it for an 01 Grand Caravan that had 10K on it and I put over 100K on it, traded it for a brand new 2011 Grand Caravan that I've put over 40K on so far. Never had engine or transmission problems with any of them, none burned any oil. Only fixes on the older ones were a rear window wiper motor on one and a power window motor on the other, and I installed those myself.

I got myself a 2009 Honda civic EX sedan 136,000 miles, original owner, no accidents, because all I had was $7900. Had it looked over and found out that I got myself one good car, some minor repairs of course but nothing major. My mechanic said I should get a good 300,000 if not more miles out of it if I take good care of it. Keep your ears and eyes open out there people it’s a tough time to be buying used cars but if you take it to your mechanic stick with a good car like a Honda you just might get as lucky as I did. Got my 91 Ford Tempo for free. It sat for 4 years, some simple maintenance, new battery, fresh fuel, new tires, and a CV axle and its been running fine for the past year, just did its 1st tune-up, yes 1st tune-up in 28 years this afternoon. For a 28 year old car it runs and drives great, gets mid 20's for fuel economy in town and mid 30's for fuel economy on the highway...and that's without an electronically controlled transmission and no overdrive, yes a 3 speed automatic, and a 2.3L 4 cylinder engine...even many of today's cars have a hard time getting any decent fuel economy with twice as many gears, and full of electronics to supposedly help with economy.
So yes you can find pretty decent cheap cars if you look hard enough and not afraid to do a little routine maintenance which is what many older vehicles are lacking....granted the paint on my car isn't that great, it has never been wrecked, a few very small scratches and dents here and there but for a 28 year old car its in pretty good shape, if the typical 80's paint/clear coat problems don't sway you away. It runs and drives great, I could care less that the clear coat is gone....its just basically a flat red color without the clear coat LOL.

It is very difficult to find anything that runs for $1000 here. California (the State of Confusion) will buy a licensed and drivable car for $1500. There are other stipulations, but they crush the car. So most cars here that are under $1500 are not drivable as is.

I have good luck with Chevrolet trucks. Going back some 15 years, started with a 57K '89 Suburban that was $525 and died of rust at 101K, motor went into another car; replaced it with a $700 150K 91 Suburban, it was worn but kept going, decided I needed a van, got a $500 '95 with around 110K, it died of rust, went to a $700 91 with around 120K on it, drove it to South Carolina twice from NY, picked parts off nicer vans in the yards there, it died of a previous owner's idiocy - thermostat housing bolt twisted off, figured I'd change the intake, two front intake bolts twisted off. Got mad and said to hell with it. Replaced it with an '88 and it's currently parked waiting for me to put another column in it. The 91 still ran and moved when I sold it, but it blew a brake line because it sat too long.
I accidentally bought a 2002 Express 3500 with 151K at an auction for $650, other than a fluke need to replace the computer it's been fine, just too damn big, so I bought another 2002, 2500 with 130K for $700 and have hardly done anything to it and driven it all over. The 3500 still starts right up and I haven't done much with it since January, I need to clean it out and sell it.
The #1 issue with these is rust, even the 2002 the computer was bad because road salt corroded the case to where water would get into it and then it wouldn't run or wouldn't run right. All the stuff in the left front of it had issues, the horn died, the nut that holds the oil cooler to the plastic radiator tank rusted away, it got all new P/S lines. When I bought the next one I checked that stuff over. All of them have needed minor things done like trans lines or oil cooler lines, mostly stuff I could do myself.
While I prefer the 94-back G-van, this 02 2500 is smooth and nice to drive. I just need to rob a junker for a cruise setup.

    Dear Scotty,
I needed a plow truck so I took your advise on what trucks not to buy and bought a 1988 Ford Bronco with the 5.0 V8 and it already had a western plow on it that worked great. It isn't an F150, but close enough. It needed the ignition actuator replaced (what a pain) and it needs rear brakes. The truck only has 125K miles on it and it runs strong and shifts great. It does have a couple rot holes in the floor, but the body is nice and has original paint. I plan on cutting out the rot and patching the floors. Everyone overlooked this truck on craigslist because it was way too old and in Massachusetts where rust is king, but I may use it for a third vehicle as well as just a plow rig as it is in amazing shape for something this old. I probably wouldn't have looked at this truck if it wasn't for your video on what the best used trucks to buy are. Even if it never sees the road it will make a strong running plow truck for my property and it's fun to mess around with.

Where I live, the salvage yards give you $500.00 for a junk car. The kind of used car you can get for $1000.00 is one you'll be selling for $500.00 in a few weeks. I generally buy used cars in the $5000.00 range. I look for cars with between 100 and 130K miles that are running well, and I prefer, Toyotas, Hondas, and select GM models. With a few inexpensive repairs they usually go another 60 or 70K miles. When something major finally happens (transmission failure, failing engine etc.), I call the salvage yard to pick it up and I go get another. Right now, my daily driver is a 2000 Honda CRV that I bought about 4 years ago for $2600.00. I got a car fax on it so I knew it had already had the valve job, so I figured is was a safe choice. It usually takes me about 3 months to find an acceptable car when it's time to send one to salvage. Driving on the cheap takes time and work.

It varies per car, it’s not accurate to say the whole company as a blanket statement. My first car was also sub $1000, Mercedes 300D on the legendary W123 chassey (probably the most loved Mercedes frame of all time, from drifting champions to Rally races). It was an amazing piece of work. Change oil in a suit? Not a problem, you won’t get a drop of oil on you, and no need to get in the ground, 15mm drain bolt is on the very front, and canister type filter so it’s not those stupid upside down cans that pour oil all over your engine bay like every other car I’ve seen... Change a tail light? Tool-less 5 second change (10 seconds from getting out of the driver seat). Need to change tires for a flat? Special hole that your jack fits in, so you won’t damage your frame like I’ve seen on every aluminum car I’ve ever checked, it’s also safer and won’t slide out as easy (automatic electric jack optional) it’s super fast with it’s long crank arm and vertical linear screw lift design (makes scissor jacks look stupid since it’s a constant force and lifting speed and not a varying load like scissor type).
It also has climate control with a thermostat, which automatically adjust heat or air an exact temp you set (not some piece of crap hot or cold knob, it’s a thermostat like your house, it would be really stupid to have a “hot/cold” knob in your house wouldn’t it? Also the fan is infinitely variable and auto adjusts based on thermostat requirements (it also has some real grunt behind it unlike every US car I’ve been in, it’s super nice to have seemingly 50mph wind cool you off as you just hop in your car and extremely sweaty from all the work outside)
Tough, insanely simple and easy to fix, enormous room to work in, super high quality, near indestructible chassis (yet it’s still about 1000 pounds lighter than normal cars of that era, and that’s certainly no thanks to the 200 pound electric seats). And great fuel economy!
The old ones were bulletproof, new ones sadly probably don’t have half these amazing traits. Just like most GM have garbage manufacturing and design, and Chrysler is going the way of Fiat (I think that says enough). So now if you want reliable, it’s Japanese or some German, but your best really is Japanese at this point.

My guideline for budget used car purchases is $3500 as a baseline (2018-2019), expect to spend $.50 of every dollar under $3500 on repairs to have a reliable roadworthy car. $1000 car will cost you at least $1250 to be reliable. If you end up spending less you got a deal.
