    • @ryanbrantley275
      @ryanbrantley275 Před 4 lety +61

      It was my first Caucus and it was ridiculously confusing and skewed. Why only have it on one day at one specific time? Why wasnt the importance of delegate explained better? I had to do this on my lunch break, most of the people that would have voted for my candidate were working at 7pm. Biden supporters were more elderly types I noticed, they weren't working evening shifts so they were well represented. Why do they have us all herded like cattle in a gymnasium and yelling and carrying on? Why couldn't we walk in at anytime during that day and push a button in a booth and grab a sticker saying "I Caucused for so and so" and then go about our day? Why did the DNC choose a tech software company called "Shadow Inc" to make this app? Have they never seen a Bond movie? All very confusing and maybe that's the point. George Carlin was right, this country was bought and paid for a long time ago by the 1% and we only have the illusion of control.

      Indeed...I have a feeling politifact will spin something to explain the Des Moines Register Poll being cancelled after Pete complained last Saturday. And they will definitely have another reasonable explanation for why his campaign and the Iowa DNC gave butt loads of money to Shadow, the company that made the app for the Iowa caucuses, & it won't be weird at all that one of his campaign advisors is married to the person who talked the DNC into using this app. Nothing to see here 🤷‍♀️

There might have been unfair barriers for Bernie in 2016, but looking at the numbers he would never have had a realistic chance to win the nomination, I thought 4 years of Trump would have changed that with Democratic voters, but they still seem to be too afraid to choose real change over "bipartisan electibility".

Yes it sucks that we can't get our guy, but for fuck's sake Bernie supporters don't let your anger get the best of you! I was unable to vote in the year 2000, as I was only 14. Otherwise I would have done my damnedest to make sure McCain won the Republican primary, even if I wasn't his biggest fan. When Bush won the primary, I knew the Republican party had fucked itself into a corner, because it wasn't listening to the larger general populous, but only the extremists in its party. I registered as Democrat in 2004 to make sure I could vote in those primaries. (And cried when Kerry lost because fucking hell 4 more years of Bush...) In 2008 I thought Obama stood NO chance of winning over Republican voters, so I voted Clinton. I was ecstatic when he won. Both times. And I remembered that it wasn't Republicans he had to win, it was independents. And there are a lot more independents than people realize. Mainly because they don't bother with primaries because primaries suck. In 2012 I was flabbergasted that the Republicans were even going through with the pretense of the primaries as drawn out as they were, especially since anyone with half a brain could say "Romney won because he was the only one who didn't look out of touch with actual reality" but I realized it wasn't about reality for them, it was just about media and money. The more they could drag it out, the more they could get the names repeatedly out there into the public mind and they had begun to cater to parrots with buzzwords, while not really understanding buzzwords themselves. That is why they lost.
      My fiance voted Green party in 2012. I was too scared to. I've had my issues with Obama not doing "enough" in my mind, but still, Ralph Nader's effects on 2000 are more fresh in my mind than most people my age (since my Dad got me into politics when I was only 4....) He's braver and bolder than I am, however. "It's because everyone thinks they're locked into only those two choices that no one votes for what they actually want." That's true. And I don't want to live in a world that only ever picks "least disliked of above." We can do better.
      This year I'm Bernie or Bust. Why? I mean I VOTED Clinton in the 2008 primaries, after all, and surely I don't want the Trumpocolypse, right?
      But I learned from all those elections. And the biggest thing I learned was that the greater populous counts the most. Always. No matter what crazy thing they want. Republicans fucked themselves into the corner, not just this year or even last year, or even 8 years ago, but as early as 2000. (Well a little earlier too, because bringing Clinton up on impeachment charges actually set the stage for Hillary to get to this popularity.... but ehhhh) Because they didn't listen to what the greater populous wanted. They started ostracizing minorities back then, and forgot that *all* votes matter.
      I don't want a Honda. I'm not going to be talked into buying a car I don't want just because I'm worried about getting the last car in the rental lot.
      I'm not Bernie or Bust, but it's time to break up the parties, they're no longer serving the people, and that was the only point to them to begin with.

Republicans and Independents will vote for Bernie, but the primaries do not reflect this (I hate that John Oliver didn't mention this). This is exactly why Hillary will lose to Trump and Bernie is the only possible way to not have a Trump presidency.

      +Brandon Pennington Then you don't understand the purpose. The nation has switched left since the last election as seen by the expansion of the blue wall. If Hillary is the nominee and everyone who leans left votes for her, than she will win by a landslide. If we agree to unite behind the nominee then the DNC can stick their fingers in their ears and force through a crap candidate who supports their interests. This system is an affront to democracy, we are basically picking the president though the nomination, if the DNC controls the nomination (which they do because it's private not public) then they control the presidency.
      The only way to fight this is to disregard party lines and vote for who you think is best. I'm not saying that I have the guts to vote Trump and potentially destroy the nation, but that is the rationale.

      This is the 10th comment I have seen like this. Where the fuck did people get off that this country was ever a democracy to begin with? The founding fathers wanted a republic, because they knew society would fall into chaos if the people had total power and control. If we were Democratic we would have ended up like the Romans a long time ago.

    • @Soletestament
      @Soletestament Před 8 lety +2

      +1309i US was a democracy under the Articles of confederation. The articles failed because it gave too much power to states and the general public. This lead to import taxes between states, multiple currencies, mismanagement of said currencies (simply printing more money to pay state debts) or choosing to ignore international debts all together. Point being, whatever undemocratic processes we have exist because as a public we weren't responsible, educated or smart enough to be trusted with that kind of power. To say we never had a democracy is forgetful of the many good reasons why our republic exists.

      What if we played a game of basketball and the whole time I was pushing tripping elbowing and flopping. Yet the refs don't say a thing while the crowd screams for justice while the refs and the league say tough luck you were outplayed. It's disingenuous.

We could, for example, criticise John for talking about pennies rather than this segment on his season 2 finale episode.. But still, how would that have changed the process of the 2 parties? To change this kind of election reform requires a long protest/campaign before the elections and requires intervention at the top level of both parties.. To get that done is not easy..

      Out of the 14 Open primaries Hillary Clinton has won 10 to Bernie's 4. Where Bernie actually does best is in Closed Caucuses which are the least Democratic because other than being closed they take place at specific times and take hours from start to finish which can be an incredible inconvenience. Navada is the only case where you can argue Bernie could've won if more people were allowed. Also as far as Superdelegates are concerned, if you took already all of Hillary's away and let Bernie keep his; he'd still be behind by over 200. I know I'll be hearing shit for this because I have seen Bernie supporters in action, but the truth is that while Sanders supporters may be louder and Senator Sanders himself may draw a bigger crowd, Clinton is drawing the bigger vote.

    They can only vote for delegate Bob, and then hope that Bob will choose to support Jim.
    Then there is the problem that Bob does not like Jim, and despite that most of the people hope and want him to vote for Jim.... Bob says; "Screw that, i don't like Jim. I'll vote for Jack."
    In doing this, he screws up everything the people want and does whatever he wants.

    • @SamWinchester000
      @SamWinchester000 Před 5 lety +3

      It's not screwed up when he was outright unpledged. None of the electors in the first presidential elections was pledged either. In a few states, you could vote for an elector to generally represent your region (in most states there was no popular vote, the state government or parliament just chose the electors), and then this elector made his own decision. Centuries later, historians have reconstructed for whom the electors voted and then put the not so natural tags "Federalist Party" or "Democratic Republican Party" on them to make it easier to understand, but in reality no political parties were existing at that time, only spontaneous political groups coming together in the individual states and coordinating themselves to vote for the presidential candidate they liked the most (which was btw meant to be WAY more than two by the constitution). John Adams was as independent as George Washington and also said that political parties are no good thing, but other than Washington he had opponents, and so everybody calls him a Federalist although he was technically independent and not even a leading figure for the Federalists but only a man they supported. Btw, in most districts electors did not even have an opponent, so it was really not about supporting a candidate but just about being an honorable fellow citizen you trust, direct democracy was almost completely irrelevant for the founding fathers (especially the Federalists).
      When Jefferson was critisising the government for being to centralist or for even existing (as he would have prefered a confederation without any central government), he effectively (and unintentionally) paved the way for two informal parties, those supporting the government and those supporting Jefferson's run to take over the government. Later, Andrew Jackson and Martin van Buren came and founded one of the first organised parties in the world, the Democratic Party. Their opponents went to be the predecessors of the Republican Party.
      But going back to the topic: The delegates of the Continental Congress or the Constitutional Convention were not oblidged to vote on certain things or push the agenda in a certain direction. All delegates had their free decision and spontaneously came to the unplanned point that they should write a constitution. When you vote a representative for a parliament, he or she can vote in that parliament for whatever they want (at least as long as their party lets them, which is depending on the country, in your country, representatives are usually very independent from their party, at least to a degree, in others there are stronger whips that might punish the representative). So, why shouldn't a qualified and intelligent party delegate have the same free decision?
      As a party member you chose a delegate you know and trust, and in the past when the first primaries occured at the beginning of the 20th century. They were an additional unbinding information but the delegates were still fully unpledged and did what they thought was the best. So actually, the Republican delegate at 10:40 was completely right. It's the delegates who decide, or at least it has been before the popularity contests called primaries were introduced, they're not just robots you instruct to vote for a certain candidate for conveniency reasons because not anyone in the country can attend the national conventions. Those are local political persons who have their own thoughts and should have the right to react and rethink when something complex is happening on the convention, e. g. like having no winner with a majority in the first round (which obviously can only be solved when some delegates alter their decision) or having a completely wierd incompetent person not fitting the party that can be prevented by superdelegates. Sadly, the second scenario occured in the last election and would never have happened if the party would have decided on their own like they did between c. 1810 and c. instead of holding popularity contests.
      Of course, John Oliver is completely right with critisising the intransparent methods of all the states, but actually a system based on local, county and state delegates or a national poll (which will never happen as your states are so much independent and different) would be the only rational system. Also, the primaries have effectively made the national conventions (and therefore a transparent decision by the party itself) completely irrelevant. I mean when was the last time the winner was not already clear before the convention?
      Btw, other than in the US, in most nations on earth party delegates regularly meet every one or two years to discuss a national agenda and elect new high-profile party executives who are the face of the party in public and want to govern the country. Waiting every 4 years for a presidential election to meet and change some bureaucratic national committees nobdoy cares for like in the US is way too little for such a big organisation.

    To clarify/summarize John Oliver's point in this video (since a lot of folks seem to be mistaken):
    The primary process is set up by political parties, which are technically private organizations, which is why the process can get very convoluted and in some cases, seem entirely un-democratic. The primary process wasn't set up by the Founding Fathers or anything, they're systems that were created by each political party to choose the candidate which could best win the presidential election. It's super confusing, and both parties could do a much better job of setting up a better system. Yes, it might seem that the process then favors establishment candidates (duh, of course it would). So if we want to change the system, let's write an email on February 2nd.
    Any other thoughts?

    • @leeduon8012
      @leeduon8012 Před 8 lety +4

      That's well said. I actually don't think the party nomination process should be entirely Democratic, but definitely more so than what we have now. I think if it becomes entirely democratized, we risk being too subject to the whims of populism, which as we've seen can be a bad as well as a good thing.

    • @CinnamonMuffinz
      @CinnamonMuffinz Před 8 lety +6

      Right. The presidential election is where the question "Is this democratic?" becomes very important. But parties could choose their candidates through a variety of ways, and obviously they've decided that it's best to balance out who the party voters like and vote for, and who would really be the best candidate to carry forth their party's agenda. Being popular isn't everything.
