I really do appreciate the level of detail you achieve on your own or with friends. It is some of the most interesting and well executed history studies on CZcams that I have found.
The number of periods you cover, some being a great love of mine are a absolute treasure trove for me to listen to or revisit.
I must admit though my strengths in historical study focus on reproductions Metalwork be it from iron or silver from the early middle ages to the renaissance with a focus on Eastern European taste in art, in dress weapon decorations etc this is art and recognized as such.
Finally my greatest passion, the Great War the rebirth of nations and following conflicts which come about by decisions made early in century, like now?
    Anyway,
Thank you for your non political and concise studies given without a hint of arrogance but sincerity.
The Austrian and Balkan spark, the death which fueled a fresh Balkan war. God I do wish cooler heads prevailed from the ststes in which the armies mobilized cast long shadows.
There never was a possibility of a short war not once such large army groups existed, no longer on paper rather in fieds to mountain.
Ps bias was mentioned? Ah bias transcends every day life not just opinions.
Study your daily routine and look upon every repetitive action you undertake on a daily basis?.
Why those shoes and not those etc.

One point about the naval arms race between Great Britain and Germany. By 1912/1913 Britain had won the race, see Taylor Struggle for Mastery, amongst others, and German military expenditure had once again been increased at the expense of the Navy, much to Tirpitz's chagrin.

At 41:20 AM mentions Niall Fergusson's criticisms (presumably from his book 'The Pity of War') of Grey and his lack of clarity over British foreign policy. A more recent book by Thomas Otte 'July Crisis' gives a different point of view regarding Grey's performance. His opinion was that the two individuals to emerge from The Crisis with their reputations intact were Grey himself and the German ambassador to London, Lichnowski.
I ought to add that Otte subsequently published a weighty biography of Grey.

I really enjoyed this podcast reviewing 37 days, documenting what happened in the British government before the first world war kicked off.
I loved the drama documentary and I'm only sad that it's not on CZcams for me to watch all over again.

2 things - if possible, I'd appreciate a reading list for this topic...
Second, how was the political situation developing during the war, especially, what led a far distant power of the US get in, T. Roosevelt had successfully moderated a peace process between Russia and Japan, why did Wilson no take up the chance here, how did they arrive at the Treaty of Versailles...?
Why was the Russian-German cooperation stifled in 1894...?
Might make up for another talk.
Thank you so much for fair view.

The best two books that I have read on the origins of the War are: Sleepwalkers by Christopher Clark and The War that Ended Peace by Margaret MacMillan. For the aftermath of the assassination July Crisis by Thomas Otte is a very good read.

What do you mean when you say that WWI was not inevitable? I can understand that there were strong opportunities to avoid war, but after years of mounting tensions between the powers, and great tensions within their empires, can it be said that it was only a matter of time before a World War began?

True but the scale might have been limited. For example it was in no way inevitable that Britain, USA and Japan would join in. Well nothing is inevitable in history but you get my point.

    • @ivanprskalo9415
      @ivanprskalo9415 Před rokem

@@erikdk321 I am not sure if the scale would have been any more limited for what it was. It maybe could have been prevented in 1914, but the conflict would have erupted some years later. Austria-Hungary was torn apart by national rivalries, Russia was a failing country with too many radical elements praying for power, the USA was coming forth as the new power in waiting, and the colonial system began to show its first cracks. Too many factors created tension and unease, and I do not believe a worldwide conflict could have been avoided. Some pressure release was bound to happen. Maybe my knowledge is too thin, or ideologically colored, but I do not see how the conflict could have been avoided.

They showed the Serbs in a bad light Look at the scene when Princip shoots Franz Ferdinand He jumps on the side of the Car & fires like crazy on him & his Wife The Look in his Eyes & the Smile are monstrous In reality Princip shoots only 2 times & the wounds from Ferdinand & his Wife are fatal When he heard that he killed Sophie he was devastated Princip was a lousy shot The Black Hand wich was a Name given to them by the Viennese Press (real Name was "Unity or Death" or Ujedinjenje ili Smrt in Serbian) was a Organization that had a lot of support in Serbia & Serbian Army Circles but had no support from the Serbian Government Pasic who was the Prime Minister was in a Power Struggle with them It's de facto Leader "Apis" Dimitrijevic was trying to install a Military Junta with him on Top & hated Pasic & the Civilian Government He also alerted the Austrian Authorities that a Group of Kids (They were no hardcore Assassins or Terrorists) who were idealistic Fools are planning an Assassination They cost Serbia & the Serbian People a lot Around 1/3 of the Serbian Population died during the War & during 1916-1918 there were nearly no Children born in Serbia It was a catastrophe Serbia just came out of the Balkan Wars & was in no position to fight anybody let alone the Austrian Empire & Apis & the Officers in the Black Hand knew better then anyone that we had no chance in this conflict They were Patriots & not suicidal Idiots so i don't buy this Theory that it was this great Plan to provoke Austria into a War by them

Fascinating to listen to. No overly convinced though about apologist arguments for Germanys role in Causing The War ? Echoes of the lack of guilt for causing / acknowledgment of losing The Great that led eventually to The Second World War ? 1918 -1939 was little more than half time in the same Match surely ? Not wishing to be flippant.
Over Intellectualising based on minutiae surely ?
Fascinating never the less either way. Thank You. Interesting.
