- Welcome to episode two of Talking Watches. Last month, we sat down with singer, songwriter, and friend of HODINKEE Mr. John C. Mayer to talk about some of his favorite timepieces, and how he got into collecting. Today I'll be showing you part of my conversation with another young watch collector, who happens to shoot a mean three pointer -- former national college basketball player of the year, and current LA Clipper, Mr. J.J. Redick. J.J. is a highly astute collector that has an innate appreciation for true watchmaking, and today we are proud to present, exclusively on HODINKEE, Talking Watches with J.J. Redick. This needs an update! JJ Redick is doing really well as a Basketball analyst right now, and I'm sure his collection has evolved.
He’s recently stated he got rid of his watches and no longer wears a watch.
I was hoping he would have expanded his collection as well
@@jnac216 This is so fascinating. I would love to read an article on why he no longer collects or wears a watch.
6 years later this is still my favorite episode of talking watches. Great collection, great video.
Redick just broke the NBA stereotype for watch collecting! Tasteful and meticulously curated collection that I’d actually like to have. This is definitely one of the underrated episodes of talking watches!
Impeccable taste J. J Redick! And a really cool guy it is clear
That F.P. Journe is absolutely stunning. Hands down my favorite of his collection.
I agree 110%!! Absolutely gorgeous!!!
Also kind of a Duke/Orlando Magic blue as well, which might be another reason why he chose that one.
Finally an NBA guy with good taste for ⌚️
yupp!! you have to check david robinson's collection too!
The IWC Portuguese is so damn beautiful.
I know nothing about basketball, but this dude seems pretty chill. Nice video.
Matthew Hedges said his not a top 10 guy but he is number 1 when it comes to collection watches for an nba guy
I honestly think JJ's collection is my favorite to be featured on talking watches. Only 6 pieces total, but each one is quality. Only thing missing is a rolex. If he had a vintage rolex, like the pepsi gmt or even a daytona, it would be pretty perfect.
Instablaster.
what does he NEED a rolex?
Why would he need a Rolex? Because everyone should? Just silly...
Since it was launched, I think this is my sixth time that i kept repeat watching this episode. My favorite episode.
wtf is with the constant close-ups of the random dirty liquor bottles?
+jimmyp410 ... 100% agree...so frigging distracting.... stick with the subject of watches, and not some art BS Film...
It establishes setting, it also probably gives the business a tiny amount of visibility. After all, they did provide the space for the video to be shot in. Why not give them a small amount of visibility to provide such a nice setting for the video?
Editors need shots of other shit to hide edits of pieces of lines with the guys not on camera and a common thing is to film stuff in the location
Hello? Because it’s artsy
Please do some more "Talking Watches With"!!! I love these videos!
Substance, class and style. Beautiful collection!
Ben always looks like he's not really listening
If this isn’t listed in a hodinkee reads mean tweets segment I’m going to be disappointed
Ben,
These videos are great. You never know just who is seriously in watches, and I really appreciate the ability to geek out a little bit with you and your guests.
Love this video series. hope to see more!
I absolutely love these videos. For someone like me who can't really talk to anyone knowledgeable about watches, this is a great insight into what other collectors are thinking and doing.
I’ve watched this episode 6x! Love it!!!
Love JJ Reddick (Post-Duke hahaha) and this is still one of my favorite episodes, even after all these years. On a recent NBA podcast, he said that he has now sold all of his watches as part of a life cleanse.
Exotic Wine Travel, still see him wearing one during playoffs post game interviews.
I love coming back to see JJ’s collection, because he wears watches with leather straps. It makes me feel really happy to know there are more of us out there who still like the leather straps and a touch dressier than what we see from the awful bro culture collectors.
These videos are really great. I'm relatively new to watches in general but I learn a bunch watching these videos. keep em coming!
Interesting interview with a really fun player to watch. Great taste in watches as well.
JJ has got a championship shot this year and is getting paid and sounds like a thoughtful guy and watch collector. Rooting for him.
Nice collection.I like his taste
Nice to see my man rock the F.P. Journe!
Pre-arm sleeve and pre-kids, J.J., knew what’s up with the FP Journe because it’s Duke blue like him. J.J. is a prince of a guy and a true gentleman. More than a dozen years ago, when my oldest, Jackson, aka, J-then 12 or 13-got sick with the flu, I wrote J.J. Redick at Duke to see if he’d send a get well email to my son, his biggest fan. And, lo and behold, he did. Not only that, he shared a few experiences, asked Jackson some questions, and, as ever, went above and beyond. You can imagine my J’s reaction. Small wonder, he immediately changed his email moniker from Jackson to JJ and has left it that way to this day. #goJJ #goduke #godukesouth 🔵 😈 💪
JJ has the best collection. To the point and it shows he researched well for it.
A man of taste,definitely!
Hmm. Personally I don’t associate sleeve tattoos with good taste, but that’s just me
wish the series continued
i love these videos!
He just gave an interview where he said he sold his entire watch collection and doesn’t wear a watch anymore.
He's almost right. 38-42mm is the ultimate men's watch size range.
Now J.J Redick has a podcast, The Vertical Podcast, pretty great. Mostly about basketball but Redick talks like he's been a pod caster for years, I completely recommend it.
In "All The Smoke", the Showtime basketball show with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, Stephen mentions in Episode 7 how JJ influenced him to drop all his iced out watches.
I need an IWC apparently.
The chronographs of Redick.
Underrated comment
Hodinkee... do one with a "Seiko collector".
But if you visit the website, they noticed seiko skx013 for the value proportion
You missed one show with turtle guy. I forget the name, damn. He have versitale and beautiful collection.
Found it: its john edelman, check it out.
Hodinkee is way too pretentious
Check out Daniel Dae Kim’s video! Im sure you’ll love it!
@@TunaStrata Agree, that guy was a true collector. He didn’t care about how flashy it was and thought he always had to make a statement. He said the best thing about that watch is that it’s a Seiko
Solid investments! 100% every piece he owns is unique and special.. definitely better than most ballers.
Watch collection update - he sold everything!
What's the name of that Patek? It's amazing!
5970p my dream watch too
beautiful watches
JJ Reddick's taste has matured into really great peices
i love how he mentioned the vacheron first. finally some VC recognition lmao
great taste, those will age well.
Watching this later, it's so sad to see JJ without a ring
Was he paid in watches while at Duke? All joking aside... I liked that he had one of my favorite watches, IWC Portuguese.
He was paid under the table lol
Good taste
my impression on reddick just went sky high. he looks to be a cool dude w/ taste
the AP safari is awesome
The vacheron is just awesome
2:02 Notice how serious he gets when Ben classifies him as a "basketball player". Kind of like a subtle jab at him. Like you've got great taste...for a basketball player. lol
5:20 what is the exact model of this Patek? Anyone can tell me please?
JJ said on 'espn the jump' that he sold every watch he owned to focus his discretionary income spending on experiences instead.
I know
This guy has the same taste in watches as me, and he seams like a cool guy as well.
what model number is the jumbo?
Great taste. That F P Journe...wow.
JJ is a cool dude and I understand you need sponsorship but it was pretty sad he did ads for MVNT on his podcast.
Whats the last patek that he's wearing?
do YOUR collection ben! :)
do you think he can do one with E-40
nice he actually knows something
F.P. Journe for $20K in 2013, selling for triple that now! If only I had $20K in 2013...
5170g is the grail ♥️
from amateur watch collector to podcast god, what a career
Any chance of getting Charlie Sheen to do one of these?!
Like the man himself I reckon that would be obscene
Can we do a follow up vid? What's he got now??
He said he sold all his watches
my dream watches are VC patrimony perpetual calendar and calibre 1731 and a lange &sohne 1815
respect for vacheron constantin .
Wow he has the limited edition 1921.
Happy retirement JJ
I had no idea JJ collected watches
Some great watches surprised no rolex
Great life style video.. Laid back ... Keep going to foreign countries ... ask next ?
Come win your championship with sixers big boy!
Man he was a killer for duke. Would really like to see him get a ring.
Lol good luck with that in Phil-the Process-delphia 😂
special account for vintage watches sheikh.tarek
didnt know keanu reeves collected watches
whats the reference of the Patek
Jon Goriup 5170G
here i am, with my 50 dollar quartz :(
gotta start somewhere right? The most expensive watch I have cost 400 bucks. I'm building my collection slowly ubt surely!
Just wear the watch you like. Cost means nothing really, except to impress people you don't know. I wear a $25 quartz sometimes, then other times a $100 G-Shock or a $200 automatic. Most people care less about what watch others wear, and don't even notice it. Wear what you want and can afford.
It's funny but my cheapest watch (a $40 black leather band small face Limit I ordered from the UK) gets more complements than anything else I own. To be fair I do wear it more, but people always think the $40 watch is something really expensive, when really it's the cheapest I own. Point being $ doesn't mean much unless you're going for a status type watch, which there's nothing wrong with either if that's your thing.
JK What I meant with my comment was that I have a very specific taste for watches, so the fact that I found one I really liked for 400$ is amazing, so the prize doesn't matter, but the material value to me is sky high
Go Quartz power!
NBA Personality with dress watches...Very interesting
Cameraman: You guys go ahead and talk about your watches, I’ll be over here getting b-roll of shit that has nothing to do with the video
How come nobody mentions a swatch in their collection or umm... Casio g shock? They are fine time pieces with excellent quartz movements...
I have a rare Michael Johnson signature swatch watch from 1996 that I wear... It's a chronograph as well.
It's like the Rolex Daytona of Swatches.
Because Swatch is for teens, not serious watch collectors. People who collect Running shoes collect Swatches. Hint: sell them all now and use the money for a Daytona or Sub. You won't regret it.
Locutus D'Borg not entirely true....of course most swatches arent worth anything but there are a few highly collectable swatches... Kiki picasso swatch, jelly fish, the fingernails, the puff and the Oigli oro by Paladino to name a few...All well over 20.000$....anyways back on topic. Nice collection. Especially the Ap safari..Love that watch but ill stick to my explorer 2 and Seamaster... They serve me just fine
Locutus D'Borg I think YOU'RE NOT A SERIOUS COLLECTOR! Don't diss my Swatch because you're jelly.
Locutus D'Borg I'm not wearing my Swatch now... I'm wearing my Rolex DateJust.. 2 tone. I feel like an 80s executive.
John Mayer collects tons of running shoes and has a serious watch collection and he knows about watches...
There is more to interview....I've seen many more ball players with a lot of classy pieces....
Talking ABOUT watches
mans also has a 6263 daytona, he's actually a watch guy
Well now we know Adam Levine has a hunky, beefy, jock for a little brother. lol
Seriously, though, if I had as many windfalls in my bank account (as pro ballers do) I'd invest in luxury watches too. It's an investment, it's an indulgence, it's a trophy. Everybody wins!
I reckon the watch he wore when he signed with the Clippers is the one he’ll sell first lol
lol anyone knows where to get the beaded bracelet thou?
Just use your old butt beads
+Richard Burns LOL
+Richard Burns That was so childish. I laughed uncontrollably for 10 minutes.
David Yurman
'Spiritual Beads' Bracelet
850 watches a year...it's surprising that it is even that many of them.
Apparently he has since sold his watches and doesn't collect anymore.
Really??
In India people be 5'4" and wearing 45-46mm ones 😂
I'm 5'4" too but draw the line at 38 , 39 at max!!
Can't find good normal sized wathes here
There's nothing to do, a lot of people keep confusing vintage look with antique look..Is not the same thing...
Shoulda went with the Nautilus. Not that JJ can't afford 1 now...but still.
20 grand for a chronometre blue… man I missed the bus
Was a great collection. Too bad he sold it off.
FP Journe looks really cool, but how am I suppose to service that.
Chinaman Champ send it to them, same as any other watch
Abstracted
Very nice Mr Redick. Very nice. Now go and buy yourself an iron!
20 grand for a chronometre bleu
