- Our cover of the wonderful "Bluesette", originally composed and performed by jazz harmonica genius, Toots Thielemans.
Ben and I have been making a series of recordings together lately that have shed new light on our approaches to the "jazz sound", and what it means to play the tradition. Most of those recordings can be found on my other channel, @JMUSICEnsembleOfficial . However, this song in particular sets off my synesthesia in a way that's hard to describe beyond the colors and abstract imagery I see, but the way the melody and the harmony simply work together by how they move is some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard. Thanks for listening, and I hope you enjoy our little session!
Patrick Bartley - Alto Saxophone
Ben Rosenblum - Accordion

I’ll be sure to send you the hospital bill after I get my jaw reattached... cus it’s still on the ground. 😱😱😱
woah Cody!
The only bad thing about this video is that it took me a year to find it. Love your uploads, and you and all your colleagues are excellent players and improvisers. Thanks for all your high-quality material!
I've heard great altissimo and effective use of reasonable range, but this master of melodic AND intervallic altissimo is unbelievable.
I get to say the good “WOW” every day that i see Patrick and his unreal playmates! What a boost. I just want to practice every time i hear you Mr. Bartley, sir.
holy hell that's incredible, I'm gonna keep this on repeat for a while :)
Still here, and still listening to this amazing rendition!
Killin it as usual!!
Mr. Bartley, your playing is so effortless! YET incredibly accurate. As for Ben Rosenblum: I've always loved the sound of accordian. it has such deep associations. Bravo!
I agree with all you say Arthur, but for only one detail: "accordion" is spelled ACCORDION! Or Fisarmonica in the country where nearly all accordiOns are built: Italy.
Or else we could start saying: If you wanted to talk about a big bloke (that's guy in British) blowing his own horn (that's boasting in British) you could say that he likes to Trump it. 🤣
If you’d like some great jazz accordion, look up Richard Galliano and Frank Morocco.
You are an inspiration Patrick Bartley. I loved this rendition. Man, two great musicians
Man, playing the accordion is a degree level 10! Tops playing the organ.
Incredible! Jazz accordion looks really difficult but man he pulls it off so amazingly well. And Pat sounds killer as always
Until I started watching you guys on Jmusic Ensemble page, I didn’t imagine Accordion would fit so well in jazz. I’ve been digging it since I have started watching and I love how it fits while playing standards. I’ve not heard this standard in a while and I’m glad this video was the one I heard for it.
Edit: “I didn’t think” > “I didn’t imagine”
Two great communicator, passionate performers and I’m sure great friends.
I am obsessed with your soloing. I'm a piano player that doesn't really listen to that much bebop but I dig your soloing especially that one with emet cohen after you've gone. Sax has so much more expression than a piano 🤔
Know what you mean however an instrument is just a tool for expression, its the person who's the expresser and not the object with the body and soul. Accidental pun :)
@@BSMusicS111 sax still is more expressive than an acoustic piano
As someone who plays both piano and sax, I would argue that maybe it’s easier to hear expression from a wind or string instrument but piano has lots of ways to express harmony and rhythm and touch that saxophone can’t do. Trying to quantify that would be nigh impossible.
@@OddMeterMusic yes but I'm talking about melody not harmony
As for touch I think a brass and wind instrument can produce better dynamics too tbh
I'm a pianist and the only time I feel like have the same expression as an electric guitar or saxophone is when I'm using a synth lead lol
Look up oscar peterson- l’impossible. Especially with the four because he expresses deep rhythmic precision and melodic feel, even leaping over Joe. (Though not his most lucid session IMO) Or listen to anything by art Tatum and get back to me…. Aunt hagar’s blues. Nobody can touch any instrument like art
Sounds like you guys have played together for 20+ years. Feel, sound, blend all is there
Wow, that's wonderful ;)
