- "Inner Urge" by Joe Henderson, performed by Patrick Bartley and Miles Lennox. Captured in a practice room at the Manhattan School of Music, on May 28, 2023.
Playing duo is a really special and intimate thing. I always appreciate the balance of freedom and vulnerability of this setting, and the courage it takes to navigate between those two lines. At a certain point, you start to realize that they are both two sides of the same coin, and freedom cannot exist without a sense of vulnerability. Playing songs like Inner Urge with no clear externalized pulse is a perfect example of that, as well! Miles's harmonic and textural choices throughout this really gave me room to play with that vulnerability. In that short amount of time, on this first and only take, we were able to place complete trust in each other to make it to the next note, and we reached some serious peaks as a result of that... I'd like to see what else can keep happening in this setting!

Back in NYC! After the Tokyo session with Will back in Fall 2022, I decided to take advantage of some time I had while on a short trip to NYC in May of this year to do the same thing - this time, with another young pianist who you'll surely want to add to your watchlist: Miles Lennox. To say this session was special would be a severe understatement. Not only was I back at my alma mater, the Manhattan School of Music - which Miles actually just graduated from this year - but I also got to spend time with this incredible pianist who I watched grow, literally, since he was 11 years old and going to my old middle school in South Florida. More than 10 years later, at 22 years of age, Miles is really showing what hard work, dedication, and staying true to your passion returns to you when you give it your all. I'm extremely proud of this young brother, and, just like Will, I'm sure you'll understand why I consider him to be one of the next pioneering forces in this music...
And to his father, who I'll leave unnamed for privacy just in case, I want to thank you and give you a shout-out, as well, for constantly being there for your son and supporting him quite literally every day of his musical journey - and always keeping me up-to-date about his journey, as well. You're an example of what a great father should be!
Once again, I'd like to also mention that each song we recorded for this channel was done in one take. This was truly an immensely honest exploration of music in its purest sense, and I hope you can enjoy that transparency with every flub and mistake we left in to keep it as raw as possible. There's not enough of that on CZcams anymore.
Thank you so much for watching, and stay tuned for more from Miles!

Absutely love this - requires several listens to take it all in.
I like how the pianist carries the tune so well. Just another reminder to play jazz and you have know the tune deeply and completely, not to mention be a master of time
Wicked man. Such a sick tune. ❤
I’m always amazed how fast you can push your glasses up as well bro! 😂
Absolutely pure, honest music! Love to see it!!!
One of my favorites by Joe; and you did just great with it! Jerry Bergonzi takes a good stab at it also on tenor.
Loved this duo performing a truly great jazz standard. Thank you both.
Hi Patrick, I enjoyed your playing. Again a magical interaction with a virtuoso in the piano. Really inspiring! . The room acoustics help make an excellent recording. Thank you for sharing this!
inner urge is def one of the most fun standards to play on imo, started learning it beginning of this year! y’all sound incredible together, love watching your duos! i loved cherokee with suenaga-san as well :)
I've listened to this about 30 times over the last two months. And it gets better every time!
Thank you both for bringing so much fun to us!
One of my favourite players playing one of my favourite players? I love this album. Huge respect
Really creative playing by Miles! Never a dull moment.
Damn! Great feel, great chemistry. ✨
Sick solo over one of my favorite songs of all time
Y’all are absolutely sick 🔥 much respect and much love bro 💪🏾
This tune is great for revealing how different players think. That Syos sounds really good for you and you have developed more on it since you first played it. I also have a custom Syos and for me it is home. You two sound wonderful and put a smile on my face!!
Fabulous fabulous my brothers 🙏🏽 Saxophone keyboard duo yay!! Brings to mind the duos of Archie Shepp and Abdullah Ibrahim, and with Horace Parlan. Duos forever !! And Always remember Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell ☮️
2 wonderful musicians being wonderful. Thank you so much for the inspiration.
Hardly ever hear this tune, mad slept on, thanks Patrick an co for the music
This song hits bro ..
Sounds killing Patrick 🔥
absolutely love this Patrick and Miles! great duo. love playing over Inner Urge. i did an arrangement where the main A section would be 3 bars of 4/4 and one of 3/4, and then the last 8 would be divided into four bars of 4/4 and the last four arpeggios would be in 3/4. it was surprisingly smooth.
Great stuff, really in sync with one another. Bravo
Very well understand of each other, that's all jazz talk about.
Beautiful play, thank you for great sharing!!
Yung brothers doing the damn thing!❤❤❤❤❤
Killin’ it as always man!! 🤙🏼

Absolutely beautiful, man!
Beautiful, man!
Ye 🔥
hell fuckin yea
Thank you for this! Beautifully done! The only thing that ruins it a bit is that damn microphone in the way. I enjoy watching your fingers fly! Patrick Bartley & Miles Lennox so talented!!
I can hear Elvin and Jimmy playing behind this.
Bravissimo! What mic are you using? WA 47 Jr?
Looove the energy. So sick
You two should also check Joe and Kenny Wheeler's solos on CZcams with Big Band. Wheeler so melodic unperturbed centered yet edgy AF.
Males seems to be having a grand old time!
The original piece is tenor sax, but you played it on alto sax.
I applaud your courage.
Isane and her sister
Everyone learns this because it is the hardest one in the book. He takes it up, as written in the key. You can play that down an octave.
Hey man thanks for the advice! I totally learned this out of "the book", for sure! And I'll be sure to take it down the octave! Really saving me here, thanks dude. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Real ones know the meta on alto on this tune is to play up the octave on the bridge, it goes way harder. Pats playing is sublime
@@PatrickBartleyMusic I don't know about "the book" but Joe Henderson is who you learn it from. Period. Take what down an octave?
You played it well (up the octave).
@@QuadriviumNumbersIt... was clearly sarcasm. Lol
Nah going up that octave is crae, I remember playing this tune back in the day funkified, love this record, thanks for sharing
Good playing, it seems like the pianist is almost challenging the sax player with his comping and grinning, which would be annoying if his playing wasn't so interesting. Not everyone can pull that off. Well played Miles you are a serious talent on the piano! Thanks for playing the melody correctly on Alto...not sure about the dancing. Inner Urge is no mean feat.
Respect.
