Traveling for $20 A Day: Hanoi, Vietnam - Ep 13

- In Hanoi, Vietnam, I got a buffet breakfast, beef pho, bun cha, ice cream, Vietnemese egg coffee, sugarcane juice, four Hanoi beers, a room in a hostel, and explored the entire Old Quarter and western side of the city, all in one day - all for LESS THAN 15 DOLLARS. Seriously, this is the cheapest city I've ever visited.
($20 USD = 445,000 Vietnamese dong)
Here's how I spent my money in one full day in Hanoi:
Hostel bed - 112,000 dong
Breakfast buffet - FREE (included with hostel)
Ice cream - 8,000
Egg coffee - 17,000
Beef pho - 30,000
Fried dough snack - 7,000
Temple of Literature - 30,000
Sugarcane juice - 10,000
Ho Chi Minh Complex - 40,000
Bun Cha - 35,000
Four beers @7k/beer - 28,000
TOTAL COST = 319,000 dong ($14.26 USD)
Oh, and one more thing: the egg coffee I drank in this video is seriously the best coffee I've ever had in my entire life. If you visit Hanoi, you MUST TRY egg coffee.

This hostel had the friendliest staff I've ever encountered. They were so happy to help me make this video and show me around Hanoi. I couldn't have had such an amazing yet frugal day without the help of the Chien Hostel staff. Shout out to Chun and Tuan!

About Me:
My name is Kevin Cook. I'm originally from Dallas, TX, but I've been living and traveling in Asia since 2013.
After graduating from university in 2011 and working a few unfulfilling jobs, I saved enough money to move to Asia and work as a teacher for a few years. That opportunity allowed me to travel around and experience new foods and cultures, and ignited a passion for blogging and making videos.
Now I travel full-time and make videos with the goal that I can encourage YOU to pursue your own dream of overseas traveling and living.
If you enjoy watching my videos, you can help me grow my channel by giving my videos a 'thumbs up', leaving a comment, sharing them, and subscribing!

I really enjoyed this video of Hanoi! Chien hostel is the best. You mentioned that for $5 you can get a bed and a big breakfast with plenty of coffee. But in the evenings you can also drink free beer!!! It's the best bargain I have found in all of my travels.
Wish I had seen your video before I visited Hanoi last month - fell in love with people and city.
I need to go back! Vietnam is freaking amazing! Thank you for the beautiful videos! keep up!! :-D
Holy cow, these are so good. Really well put together and informative, love that you are shown around by someone for most of the episode... and I thought I was a bad ass for doing this on $30 a day, lol you're killing it. I edit my own videos as well so I know what a massive feat it is to put together 8 min videos on a regular basis, it's not easy. Just found your channel, diving into more of your videos but loving the South East Asia ones right now.
Your best video, love it!
Thanks for ur nice video ☺️☺️☺️
Hanoi is so beautiful, and I'm proud to be Hanoian 😍😍😍
I've just come across your videos and I can't stop watching them! Sending love from Australia :)
Thanks, Nila
Old Quarter Hanoi was my favorite pace in Vietnam and on the weekends in the night they close of the streets and it is magic...people playing and lots of street performers :-)
Thanks to this video I stayed in Chien Hostel last year, I got the free walking tour by 2 university students who took us to the egg coffee place. I also met Tran who hooked me up with a great Ha Long Bay Cruise. He was excited when I told him I got there because of you. The stay in this hostel was perfect and they also offer Free Beer from 6-8pm.
Nice!!! Thanks so much for mentioning my blog
it was really surprised, Hanoi is very clean and as it appears on your video very less polluted and less chaotic too in comparison with other Asian cities. And incredibly cheap also
Great content! Your videos should be longer as they're so great to watch!
+The Raushen new video out tonight will be 13 minutes!! Check it out later :)
Thanks for including the hostel!
great work man!!! wish the sky and the weather could be better so the video can be more colorful and bright. Or you can edit it to make it brighter or something
Great video, thank you, Kev!!!
I really enjoyed the video man
I have just moved to Hanoi, so this is great to see some things to do!! :D
😃, nice trip around the city through your videos..😉
I love all ur videos! Plz post more, I really like them. I hope u could do a $20 Shenzhen China vid!! Keep up the effort!
Thanks so much Brian! Some day I'll be back in China and film more videos there. Cheers.
I am headed there today. Your travel video is inspiring. My budget is a quite a bit higher.... haha, but I love seeing all the details of life you are showing. Stay well, Kevin!
Thanks, Ross! Appreciate your support
Egg Coffee in Hanoi is one of the greatest gift ever created, if you haven't had one yet....my condolences
Keep traveling brother!
Nice i plan to go there this year thanks for the info
Love your videos bro! These are some great tips for people who want to travel on a budget! I'll be heading to South East Asia later this year and I will definitely try to stay to a $20 budget. However, I did say 'try'. Keep up the good work and i'll be looking forward to your next video!!
Really appreciate the kind words, man! Spend a while in Vietnam and you'll find it's actually quite easy to spend less than 20 dollars in a day. 30 dollars, if you're having a really good time.
this egg coffee Looks so Great ^^ awesome vid again greetings from Germany
Thanks, Greasy! Glad you enjoyed it
great video!
Everyone can become a billionaire in Vietnam
One billion Vietnam dong is 44k usd so not everyone
Everyone can become a trillionaire in North Korea since its so poor
Dude your videos are amazing! You deserve way more subscribers! :D :D :D I'll be going to Hong Kong next month and I'll try to spend as less as possible :) :D Keep up the great work!
Another great video Kevin. I was in Hanoi two years ago, with all that 5k dong "fresh beer" on offer it's hard to leave!
+Zeitgeist thank you. Yeah the beer is cheaper than water here haha
how did the beer taste tho ?
thankyou so much, im vietnamese, hanoi welcome to you , love all so much :)
I want some of that coffee right now as it's a dreary Monday morning in Dallas.
thanks for the videos!
Thank YOU for watching them!
The editing quality is really improving Kevin!
Thanks Paul!!!!
love your videos. You help keep my Asia travel dreama alive & educate me at same time. If $5 gets you a good hostel with buffet breakfast, what would $15- $20 get you? Very curious, please tell.
great video 😊 I'm a Filipino and I want to travel to vietnam someday 😊😊
Very interesting.. eggs in coffee! no not coffee and eggs but eggs in coffee 😊 sounds awesome!
Wow thank you l will visit next year
Good job Kevin. I am also from US and living in Shanghai right now as an expat. Perhaps a suggestion, could you stay in 1 city for a few days?
Agreee! Egg 🍳 coffee is spectacular!
Soooo good!
love the music
I'm going now ,cheers man great video
Good to hear, man. Enjoy
Great video! My mum's from Hanoi & I was last there for about 6mths back in 2000. Your video brought back so much memories & I know a another visit is well overdue. You ate my favourite dish bun cha! How did you find the food?
+Hannah Tran I loved the food. But honestly I've always loved Vietnamese food haha. Thanks for watching :)
I'm late. Very late. But I have question. Dong Xuan -> Is it (like it sounds in the video) called xun or do you pronounce the a like xuan?
wowww that coffee looks real good
I agree. Vietnamese hot and cold Coffee are the best.
Hey mate, Is this coffee available all over the place or in just at a few places in Hanoi? Planning to get there by November this year. Also, what was that beer you were having? I was told a beer is around VND 17K :p Anyways this was a very good video. Thank you!
Great vids Dude! 🤙🏼👣🧳🛩🚁🚤🏄🏻♂️☠️
Curious. Anyone know how much a guide with motorbike would cost???
Are you also paying the lunch fees etc. for the tour guide too or is it all your own fees?
Been to Cambodia this year and most things (food, drinks, hotel) are twice as expansive as in Vietnam
think of Pho as Chicago deep dish pizza and New York thin crust pizza, different regions have different styles
I wanna travel in places like Vietnam, but I'm worried about getting the squirts. Do you get that problem much?
I went to the Temple of Literature earlier this year. One of the VND notes have the temple pictured on it.
However, I think it cost me 50,000 VND entrance. The locals didn't seem to have to pay, but I think anyone who is clearly not from Vietnam has to pay. I think 50,000 might be quite a lot for a local (considering a meal costs only 30,000), but I was happy to pay to see the history.
This price seems to be pretty standard for all museums and historic places across Vietnam.
Just started watching your videos! They look amazing and gave me a lot of inspiration for my upcoming trip! I just have a question... how did you clean your clothes? How much does it cost and how often do you do it? thaaanks !
+Johan Milberg laundry places are all over the place in Asia, and it's so cheap. I usually wash all my clothes once every 2 weeks or so. I'll wear the same stuff for a couple days in a row at least
Best keep going
have you tried our famous cafe sua da yet? iced coffee with condensed milk are the best xD
I love Vietnam girl from Thailand.
All of your videos are very entertaining to watch, I am just very curious how do you get the money to travel so much?
I saved money for 2 years
WOW it still summer in Viet. what is the best time to vist BTW
What track is that in the beginning of the video?
I just had to try and make the egg coffee. It's delicious and well worth trying out
+Krish Patel nice! How'd it go?
I would certainly make it again. I didnt use as much egg mixture as you had in yours though as I'm used to coffee being black. I believe Vietnamese coffee is also more bitter than what we get in the UK. The reason for using the egg is that the proteins essentially bind to the bitter flavours and make it more palatable
love it
Hello, important question now,
Is Hanoi these days really that bad in AIR POLLUTION?
I heart it would be not good..
And how is it compared to phnom penh for example?
Thx!!
Please come to Cambodia again n visit Rathanakiri
cool video
Great video! I've heard alot about avoiding drinking beverage with ice, and even some foods because of the state of their water. How do you find eating/drinking in Vietnam?
*_This life is not safe, so we're still eating really, I think in my body also dirty things should be discharged daily so I do not worry about food and dirt._*
I was just there in March and loved the egg coffee too. Which city did you like more... Saigon or Hanoi?
+Alex Man great question... Hard to say, honestly. I liked the food in the south better but I think I had more fun overall in Hanoi. If I could only pick one, probably Hanoi. Cheers, man
So does the hostel staff take all guests out on the back of their bikes ? I too would spend less the $20 if I didnt have to spend money on transport to get to all those locations
This guy is ballin, spending grands after grands.
Love you! 👍
+Natwheezy NG love you, too!
😙
That egg coffee is a trip! Was it hard to drink? Vietnam looks amazing.

Yo Kevin you look like you're in great shape despite long-term traveling. What's your workout situation like?
+Shadi Barhoumi haha wow thanks man. Every day I do 50 pull ups and 200 push-ups. And walking everywhere doesn't hurt, either. Cheers
Hello buddy, i was wondering what country was the cheapest for you? between Thailand, Vietnam and thr Philippines??? which country's are the cheapest in hostels and food and alchol? thanks for the video's, keep up the good work.
it's vietnam
Yup, Vietnam
Yeah, at the very least he should cover their meals when they eat together, especially for the girls.
Cambodia is similar to Vietnam in my travels the past 2 years.
It's quality, not just price. Viet beer undrinkable compared to Thai and Phils
Difference between pho in saigon and hanoi? anyone?
+khaki91 check out my video Best Pho In Saigon - we cover this topic completely
Chun is cute.
yum 😛
do you spend one day only in each city?
+Johnathan Cormack depends on each place, but usually about 5 days in every city. That's enough time to scout out the area, figure out good deals, film, and edit
She is cute :) Need to bring this coffee to UK :)
