Lisette Oropesa sings an excerpt from Manon’s Act II aria in the final dress rehearsal. Production: Laurent Pelly. Conductor: Maurizio Benini. 2019-20 season.
Her voice has really grown more complex over the past few years. Add that to her sensational technique, and we may be witnessing the birth of a truly great star.
I finally saw this in performance last night. Oropesa's performance has deepened since the dress rehearsal, full of dazzling touches: a complete Manon with a full arc. What's more, the stratospheric high notes are solid and shoot through the house. The HD performance will be sensational.
I just watched this Manon this afternoon direct from the Met and she is absolutely charming she is young and as lively as Manon must be and gradually her voice deepens as she matures in life. She does a superb interpretation of this nice aria... not as gentle as Callas but who does ? and so much better than Gheorghiu (I really love that artist but she was way too heavy in that gentle aria) The HD performance was indeed marvellous. Nino Machaidze is even better I have to say.
I was at the Met for the matinee. I think Oropesa was a wonderful Manon, although she was more successful in the first two acts. That is, she portrayed the innocent girl much better than most, the femme fatale was a little hard to believe. But she was vocally wonderful. And so was Michael Fabiano. He gets a lot of criticism, but I don’t know why. He was fantastic in Le Reve, and just as great in Ah fuyez.
@Bravo Luca Sorry to break this to your heart, but opera is a reproductive art! So, good singing is extremly objective. Yes, Callas had some not so great moments, but in her prime (1949-1956) she was amazing! And you can't tell thar Oropesa is great whith no chest and high larynx. Argue all you want! Those are facts! And if you don't want to live in the past, stop listening to opera, because OPERA IS THE PAST! I'm repeating, opera is reproductive art, so you have to compare everything with singers from the past!
@Bravo Luca You may like modern singing or not! De gustibus non est disputandum! BUT!!! As I said earlier, opera singing is reproductive art, and if you want to be real opera singer you MUST sing the same way old singers did. Because, you are singing what somebody wrote! So, if Mascagni wanted "Io piango" in chestvoice, you must sing it in chestvoice! In modern music it's called cover or remix, but I don't want to hear opera cover, I want to hear real opera! Why don't put Aretha Franklin as Calaf??? She made her cover of Nessun dorma, some people like it! So, you may like the way modern singers sing, but you can't say that is real opera!
@Bravo Luca And of course I'm not talking about all old opera singers! There were bad singer then! But, there were many good singers and I don't see anyone now. Maby Hernandez. Not perfect but FAAAAAAAR better then everyone else at the Met, Scalla, Liceu, Royal etc.
If I were to judge this singer based only on this fragment I would say: not bad, but nothing captivating or special. Sorry but she does not move me. Personal taste.

Interpretazione intensa e toccante.

Nasal voice without lower register...
Dragan Vidic Just like you. Nasal personality and no balls.
GG Robbins
Why do you attack me?
Write about the singing instead if you can.
Umm nasal?? As in actually pronouncing the French nasal consonants as they should be?? Have several seats.
Bravo Luca Ok
Christopher Jackson
No her technique. Different thing.
You should hear her interviews and instastories. She gets all ghetto. How...AFFected.
