  • NOTE FROM TED: While some viewers may find advice provided in this talk to be helpful, please do not look to this talk for medical advice. We've flagged this talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, because it appears to fall outside TEDx's curatorial guidelines. This talk only represents the speaker’s personal understanding of and experiences with the potential effects of breathing techniques. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
    We do it as long as we live but mostly aren't aware of it: breathing. In his talk Lucas breaks down the fundamentals of yoga breathing in a way that you can easily remember and apply to your practice. Lucas shows us how three breathing practices - water, whiskey, or coffee -
    can be used as a tool and help us to overcome any situation.
    With a formal yoga training background in Hot Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Gravity Yoga, and the Yoga Trapeze®, Lucas has studied with some of the most well-respected teachers on the planet. His most influential teachers (all of whom he studied with personally) include Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Paul Dallaghan, Alex Medin, Gabriel Cousens MD, and SN Goenka.
    Lucas founded Absolute Yoga Academy in 2006, one of the top 10 yoga teacher training schools in the world with 2,000 certified teachers (and counting) and courses in Thailand, Holland, the United Kingdom, and the Philippines.
    In search of nutritional products designed specifically for achy yoga students’ bodies, Lucas worked with senior nutritional formulator Paul Gaylon and founded YOGABODY Naturals in the back of his yoga studio a year later. The company has gone from strength to strength and is now a world-renowned nutrition, education, and publishing organization serving 81 countries.
    In 2013, Lucas founded YOGABODY Fitness, a revolutionary new yoga studio business model that pays teachers a living wage and demystifies yoga by making the mind-body healing benefits of the practice accessible to everyone.
    A foodie at heart, Lucas was a vegan chef and owned and operated health food restaurants prior to diving deep into the yoga world. He is also a highly acclaimed writer, radio show host, TV personality, business consultant, weight loss expert, and health coach. @@smitadoshi9015 "Whiskey breathing" will create sleepiness, by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, so it is helpful at night, just before sleeping. "
      Water breathing" is always healthy. It assists in optimizing our state, whether we need a little stimulation, or a little relaxation. It is a balancing breath, helping us to maintain wellbeing adapt to life's situations.
      "Coffee breath" will stimulate the sympathetic nervous system creating a kind of "excitement" effect. This is not healthy to do too often, so Lucas reccomends 3 x 20 repetitions in the morning to start the day, then also at around 3pm when we may have the tendency to want to eat something sugary for an energy boost, and also 3 x 20 repetitions before physical exercise. Hope that's helpful :)

      I started studying the art of breathing and I have noticed myself and people around me not breathing property. Breathing correctly through nose can correct many health issues. Both mental and physical.

    • @Amy623
      @Amy623 Před 3 lety +4

      Today, doctors who study breathing say that the vast majority of Americans do it inadequately.
      We can blame some of our poor breathing habits on morphological changes in the human skull. Over the past 300,000 years, our mouths and sinuses have shrunk. It’s gotten so bad that today humans are the only species whose teeth no longer fit in our mouths; they grow in crooked. A smaller mouth and obstructed nose make it harder to breathe. Humans now have the sad distinction of being the most plugged-up species in the animal kingdom.

    • @Amy623
      @Amy623 Před 3 lety +5

      We can also blame our middle-aged bodies. Starting around 30, bones in the chest become thinner and collapse inward. We lose about 12% of our lung capacity by the time we hit 50, and then the decline speeds up. We’re forced to breathe faster and harder, making it even more difficult just to catch a breath.
      But it’s not all bad news. Unlike problems with other parts of the body, such as the liver or kidneys, we can improve the airways in our too-small mouths and reverse the entropy in our lungs at any age. We can do this by breathing properly

    • @Amy623
      @Amy623 Před 3 lety +9

      In the 1980s, researchers with the Framingham Study, a 70-year research program focused on heart disease, gathered two decades of data from 5,200 subjects, crunched the numbers and discovered that the greatest indicator of life span wasn’t genetics, diet or the amount of daily exercise, as many had suspected. It was lung capacity. Larger lungs equaled longer lives. Because big lungs allow us to get more air in with fewer breaths. They save the body from a lot of unnecessary wear and tear.
      That’s the first step in healthy breathing: extending breaths to make them a little deeper, a little longer. Try it. For the next several minutes, inhale gently through your nose to a count of about five and then exhale, again through your nose, at the same rate or a little more slowly if you can. This works out to about six breaths a minute.
      When we breathe like this we can better protect the lungs from irritation and infection while boosting circulation to the brain and body. Stress on the heart relaxes; the respiratory and nervous systems enter a state of coherence where everything functions at peak efficiency. Just a few minutes of inhaling and exhaling at this pace can drop blood pressure by 10, even 15 points.

    In all these three techniques use your belly to inhale and to exhale. It's very important. When you're inhaling start expanding your abdomen, then ribs, then chest, when exhaling - all the way back- chest, ribs, abdomen. Except for the "coffee" breathing. There you only use your abdomen, concentrating on diaphragm 🙏

    Water - inhale 4, pause a beat, exhale 4, pause a beat - repeat. Balancing effect on nervous system. Practise all the time. Do any time you need balance.
    Whisky - inhale 4, exhale 8 - repeat. After 10 rounds parasympathetic nervous system engages - rest and digest. Use sparingly eg to help sleep or if your head is buzzing after a busy day.
    Coffee - use sharp shooting exhale breaths from lower abdomen. Relax shoulders and body. Exhale repeatedly to fast beat eg 3 repetitions of 16 breaths. Use sparingly as this cranks up your body energy eg 3 rounds of 20 in the morning or before exercise or at 3pm in the afternoon when you have a dip.

      It is also taought that Prana is Sanskrit for the lifeforce, as stated, and YAMA means restraint..so prana*yama is control of the lifeforce. Either way, it is a conscious practice directed at the life force through breath. This is like the Qi Gong or practice of breathing to control/direct the qi or chi in Chinese Internal Arts. Agreed, it is crucial to length and quality of life. It is the fourth limb of the eight-limb yoga (Patanjali's Ashtanga) Yama (ethics), Niyama(restraint), Asana (posture), Pranayama (breath work), Pratyahara (withdrawl of senses/internal focus), Dharana (concentration), Dhyani (like midfulness) Samaddhi (blissful unoin with the DIvine)

    I don't know how many repeats of these to do.

    For all those who disliked, I feel you.
    I tried this and failed in the beginning.
    The trick that worked is, ignore the count at first.
    Inhale for 1-2 seconds, exhale for 1-2 seconds. Keep the time of breaths as he says.
    1) inhale n exhale. Equal lengths of very short breaths. I do ten breaths in a set.
    2) very short inhale, slightly longer exhale. I do ten breaths in a set.
    3) do this one exactly as he says.

    • @PescaitoFrito
      @PescaitoFrito Před rokem

      Yeah this make sense because when i was trying to do the Water breathing
      i feel good inhaling 4 seconds, but then exhaling only 4 seconds make my anxious because i had more room to exhale for more seconds.
      So by doing this warm exercise like: inhale 2-3 second exhaling as I feel great (5-6 seconds) repeat 10times, then i can do more relaxing finally the 4inhale/4 exhale.
      Ty.
