- 1969 Chevrolet Corvette 427 L88 vs 2013 Chevrolet Camaro SS (FAST Drag Racing)
Two very different cars featured today. The first is one of the most infamous (possibly now the most expensive) cars from the 1960s. That being a 1969 Chevrolet Corvette L88 427/430 horsepower. Yes, a 427 cubic inch fire breathing monster with, "430" horsepower. 430?!?! More like 500+. Very subtle cars, and VERY quick. What's cool about the L88 is that it was meant to be a bare-bones racer. You COULDN'T get air conditioning, a heater/defroster, or a radio. Apparently, they are a total pain to drive at lower RPM. Either way, it's a super cool car. The opponent is also very cool in its own way. You're looking at a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro SS. That generation is underrated and a GREAT value right now. You can pick up those cars for under $20,000 and right out of the box they can run in the 12s! That's awesome. I've never owned a Camaro, but I just might have to pull the trigger on one in the future.
The Corvette participates in the FAST (F.A.S.T. - factory appearing stock tire) drag racing series, so please check them out and read the rules. The Camaro appears to be a Pure Stock drag racer.

Don’t forget to vote for who you think will win! You’ll see the tab in the upper right corner near the beginning of the video. Probably no video next week you guys, instead I’m going to work on getting the Instagram up and running. Maybe some merchandise options as well, we’ll see. thanks!
I would be interested in some merchandise
Sorry no 4.56s with a trap speed of 125mph. I'd guess 3.73s. Car wasn't running a tall tire so you definitely don't need all that gear with the power this car made combined with the car being less than 3300lbs.
Since the thumbnail shows the Corvette with a huge lead, I'd be surprised if the Camaro gets any votes.
Instablaster
I can't believe the camaro won on the top end. that car must be triple turbo. lol
That Corvette is a definite screamer. Pretty cool seeing the rear end really squat down at the launch
Definitely quick!
And highly modified😯
That ass end was squatting!!
You tell that that thing was hooking up hard. It was CLEAR by the 100ft mark that the Camaro wasn't catching it.
@@CarsAndZebras what's the fastest e.t. and mph you have seen with these races?
The trick to these ratings being low is to take an engine that spins to 7000, and announce the power output rating at 5000 rpm.
Yep... exactly for insurance purposes
Could've been dyno discrepancies as well
need metal lol, only if it was an industry wide bunch of coincidental dyno discrepancies all in one short span of years in history
@@needmetal3221 Nope. The factory rated the L88 at 430 hp at 5200 rpm for insurance purposes. The reality was 550-580 hp somewhere around 6800 rpm.
Definitely what they did. Track time doesn't lie, he'd need ~500hp at the crank (~435whp) for a 125mph 10sec pass at 3250lbs (and that much grip). I've seen other tests in the past putting stock L88's in the 500's with very mild carb tuning. The Camaro would need 380bhp (345whp).
I think Mr. L-88 had some drag slicks and 4:56s. Mr. Camaro was caught updating his fb status when the light turned green
And what the hell was that strange rpm rise at the end ...it was like a lazy shift where he was still on the gas but pushed the clutch slowly
MrHillfolk it was another car in the burnout box. That happens in many videos
They weren't slicks, but they do allow tires with much softer rubber compounds for better grip as long as they look stock, but yeah he definitely had 4.56s or maybe even 5.12 gears and a damn good tune up.
@@MrTheHillfolk First you hear the L88 let off the gas after he crossed the finish, but the Camaro was still accelerating since he was almost 2 seconds behind, then you hear the next cars in the burnout boxes when the Camaro lets off.

Haha it just threw me off for a second, like I forgot more cars were pulling up to run 🤣

First time I drove my friends Vette. It was like steering a missile. Loved it.
I have an l88 in the garage! Lil story,,, years ago a local parts store rebuilt one for their jet boat. Put it in and down to the river they went! About a few hundred yards down the river it locked up! Here being so excited they forgot to put oil in it! So a new crank and one rod later it lived in a friends 67 chevelle. I swapped a few things for it years later. Monster torque!
Thanks for sharing!
I like both cars but it was sure nice to see the old 427 whip on the small block.
Yep. I have a 427 in my 1966 Chevelle so this was fun to watch. They are good engines. Mine still runs great 40 years after having it built.
Daaamn! I wonder how many people in the early 70s swapped out their rear ends because that Corvette is fast AF!!!
That was amazing that is one of the best launches I've ever seen in any car what a car what a video keep this up
Eh, I'm not so sure that launch was as impressive as it appears. It's a GOOD launch for sure but ultimately it looks so good mostly because the Camaro Launch was weak by way of comparison for some easy to point to reasons. The Corvette has way more gear and it weighs quite a bit less too. Then there is the other big point. A car that can tickle the very top of a 10sec 1/4 mile is always going to look extremely fast when matched up against a car running mid to high 12s. Not to take anything away from the woman driving that Corvette she's good and shows up at a lot of these events. Her car is wicked fast very well set up.
Quickly becoming one of my favorite CZcams channels. Thanks!
Thanks for watching, I will keep them coming! 👍
That Vette driver knows how to rev his engine. 😎
8/2023: I have owned two recent SS camaros. And, I currently own a 2004 Z06 Comemorative Vette that i bought new also. This 1969 Corvette is Awesome!! Love It!
This is the best race/Vette that you have ever posted!

The most entertaining nostalgia racing channel ever.LMAO on the interjections.Plus a "Ball and Biscuit" White Stripes intro was interesting.
Thanks for watching! 👍
I'm not surprised by the results. I had a near identical engine as the L88 in the 'Vette in my '64 Malibu when I graduated high school (1973) and it was the fastest car not only in the school parking lot but in town as well. I made it even faster with a ZL1 cam and Edelbrock Tarantula intake after graduation. Those were good old days.
Was that the gear drive over the counter one.My HS friend put one in his L-88.After a street race, the engine would backfire over 1500rpm.Towed it home and found a broken valve spring on #1.He never checked for spring bind with this cam, lucky he didn't drop the valve.Went down and got the propper springs, shims, keepers and specs.Good to go.
I’m definitely impressed by the curb weight of the L88 vette!
Zora ran a 69 L88 auto in the 10’s back in1969
Thats very interesting impressive
Ya that was very possible
Totally doable , nothing has changed over the years . L88 + slicks + 4.56 gears = high 10s low 11s 😍🏁
Man, that Vette dropped the Camaro like yesterdays newspaper. 🤣Thumb up.
Morale of the story , many try the L88 Vette , many lose ! 🏁
Ball and Biscuit was the perfect lead-in for this vid. Well done.
OMFG, that 'vette is insane!
I had a '68 Corvette L88 with a 4 speed. I replaced the 427 with a 454 that had a solid roller cam, Air Flow Research heads and a Dominator. The rear was 4:88's.
4.56 and 4.88 worked well with the M22 🏁
Big block Chevy rules bro 👊 solid lifter just straight up awesome
Oh yeah!!! Wood!!! Big log wood!!! What's weird is the L 71 had 5 h.p. more if you look at the build order at 435 where the L88 was listed at 430 h.p. hmmm. The rear gear options where definitely funky for the automatic, especially with the radio delete package and all that.
Crazy man crazy!!! Love your vids bro!!! The in-depth history and funny as shit inserts are spectacular!!!! Thanks again!!!!! Wood!!!!!!
Love your channel!!!
The L88 was actually putting out 540-580 hp and would run mid to high 11's out of the box. Amazing. I was very impressed with the Camaro running mid 12's especially considering they weigh 3900 pounds.
I don’t think it’s stock mid 12s
Vince Piggins and the boys at Chevrolet only wanted the L88s in the hands of actual racers. That’s why the advertised hp ratings were listed 5 hp below the tri power 427. The L88 was WAAAAAY more powerful than the 450 hp 454 LS6 that came out in 1970. The only thing that came close to the L88 was the aluminum block ZL-1 427 produced in 1969…also a race-only engine. The ZL-1s were also used in the McLaren and Chaparral Can-Am cars that dominated the race tracks of North America…until the Penske Porsche 917-30s came along.
Vince came over to Chevy from Hudson…and was behind the 7X Hornet NASCAR engine. A true Detroit icon.
L88 was the king motor in ‘69, street Hemi’s were detuned while an L88 was built for racin. An L88 could beat all the stock rides back then.
That was a great run at the end. Although the Corvette had weight reduction advantage, the 2013 Camaro has full interior and full factory weight so it makes sense that it would get beat. I also like the brief info about the vette's history, that car would run up a price between 400k to 500k easily at auction.
Thanks for watching! 👍
1969 technology vs. 2013 technology. I would say it's quite a surprise by how much that Vette whipped the Camaro.
Who u
Talk about a clash of Titans, and MAN, that Vette just ran away from that Camaro! Thumb up for posting this.
Damn, that Corvette wasn’t messing around. Good run for the Camaro though
What a monster! Awesome!
Informative and funny at the same time.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate it! 👍
The Stingray has some awesome weight transfer on launch
John Force must've been piloting that L88! Damn thing got out like Usain Bolt!
A zl1 camaro would have been more fair,The L-88 was underated @ 430 H.P. it makes about 550 H.P. in reality.
I ran high 10s low 11s back in the eary mid 80s. 75 TA with a built 030 over 455, 670 heads 4hole long tube hedman headers. Fairbanks sling shot stall. 256 superhwy gear option. That time is with 256 gears! It was untouchable on the street from a 30 roll. Everything hit right & I could get a front wheel off the ground. This was before full frame kits. I was 19. There were 2 other cars ran 9s on the street. I knew them both & they knew me. They let me have the street. I could beat them on the street but not the track. We all knew why. Gearing. Back then torque ruled the streets. I have a 74 TA now. Same engine different heads. Can't run 13.5 compression on pump premium anymore. So now 96 heads. 😊
Hell... I only got to 5:42 before.... Well anyway. The L88 is no joke then or now. The Camaro beat the MT time, though, and sounded great. I remember reading an article 30+ years ago that said the test drivers were nervous because the L88 would spin the tires at will at 100 mph. Not bad for a 50 year old car!
I think the Camaro ran a great time, for what it is. They are a fantastic value right now. I don’t doubt that with the L88s...just nasty. If you look in the video there is a twin orange Corvette shown in the background. That is also a L88... that runs 9s on stock appearing tires.
And had a top speed of 173 mph 🏁
I could have told you the vette was walking away with this one lol. If I remember right, that's Terry Pennington's wife that drives that one and for quite a while it held the record in pure stock, and may still do. The C3 works fantastic in this type of class racing with so much rear weight shifted over the tires. We had a pure stock 71 454 that I raced and it was the first car I had sub 2.0 60 foot times on stock rubber without much effort.
You are correct on the owner. I generally don’t bring up the owner’s names in the videos because I want them to be able to remain anonymous, if they so choose. I don’t think she holds the record anymore, but really that’s just a game of who can be the closest to 11.5 ET, anything under and they are booted.
@@bingobango170
Silly comment. Spray gets you banned at these events. There is more than 1 L88 that competes at this event. 4 that I know of, and they all run very close to each other. The L88 in the C3 is one of the most advantageous packages to run within the rules of this event. It's why they are generally at the top of the food chain.
Daaaaaamn..badasstynes insane vette. 2thumbs up. Great to short video.
Yes old school beating up on the ls, I love it!
Actually the bone stock LS-7 Z06 would run faster than that modded L-88 and use 91/93 octane pump gas. The Camaro is 1000 lbs heavier.
Oh that L88 Vette had some very soft compound street tires that were very sticky and a 4.56 who you trying to fool runing a 10.99 @125 mph ? That launch was insane !!! A very nasty Vette indeed 🏁🤩👍
I like the tracks that show the 60ft times way better for cars like this.
That's a beast holy crap 👍
That Corvette can move! Pretty darn expensive car… I like the Camaro too. Really good value for someone that’s looking into drag Racing.
agreed ,that camaro looked pretty funny here, but look around youtube... there's no shortage of street legal ls camaros running 10 second times. Those cars can move too.
If lookin 2 loose
Holy freakin crap! Thats crazy! Enough tire slippage to get in the powerband quickly then hookin up pretty soon after. Slicks might not allow that. I used that many times racing other stock vehicles pretty successfully.
I wonder if those were radials with a bias ply pattern to look stock, a decent compromise between slicks and original tires. A good portion of that race was won with that launch, super hot right right off the line, great driver, had to watch that one over & over.
That was nice to see!
I would say the Corvette has 4.11 in it Fun video thank you
Thanks for watching!
I have an 8.1 496 I'm building in my 78 L82 C3 corvette. Hope to be faster than an L88 vette :) love this video!!! Merica!
To quote Steve Brûlée of motor trends engine masters. Nothing beats a LS engine.. except a big block Chevy. I had an L88 from a out of a destroyed corvette race car. I ran it in a Hondo flat bottom vdrive drag boat. It was nearly unbeatable. Sold the whole boat to a guy who only bought it to yank the engine for a corvette he was restoring. I will never forget the sound for that L88. I got kick off a lake because it was 105db at idle. Rangers said it was too loud. It was down right deafening at full throttle with water cooled over transom headers in that boat
Crazy 😎
The L-88's were one of those really fast cars from the 60's. At 12.1 compression not to long after when you could not find Sunoco 260 any more you had to fill it with gas from your own stock in the garage. I got pretty good at going to the nearest small airport filling up 5 gallon containers with av gas. High octane unleaded finally started showing up near me in the 90's.
Holy Carl I wasn't expecting that.l-88 hooked up & got to stepping & quick.impressive but that can't be stock.
Nah, FAST drag car. They allow any modification as long as the engine and car look stock. Has to run on stock tires, though. Pretty difficult to run quick times without slicks
Cars And Zebras Modern street and performance tires are light years ahead compared with what came on those cars in 1969. The L88 as you said is a bonafied racing engine and horsepower goes up quite a bit with a set of headers. The cast exhaust manifolds from the factory are quite restrictive. I’m not surprised that two seconds could be lopped off the original time with just the addition of headers and modern tires.
Curtiss Smith it’s a lot more than headers and modern tires lol
That wasn't predictable at all.
That was sick!!!
This is actually the slow orange car. One of the other Orange Vettes will run 9's. They were parked across from us in Norwalk last year and the cars are running Bias Ply tires. It is part of the FAST class they race in with NMCA. They actually had a problem with the fast car and tore it apart in the grass and I think ended up winning the event after they found the problem. Great Guys!
Damnit!!! I have to change pants... And I'm at work.. thanks zebra
Once knew a guy that had a '69 L88. That thing was a suicide machine. He lost control showing out in a parking lot once, left the pavement and ended up between two large trees by miracle. He eventually threw a rod and had to get rid of it. Probably saved his life.
what would the 2:73 gear trans top out at in the vette (mph .. .with 3:73 rear or 4:11

I've seen it listed as both Muscle car and sports car
Is the corvette have the transaxle rear end?
Crisp shifts from Vette driver. Nice launch too.
Very good driver for the Corvette. Her husband has a matching L88 himself.... that runs 9s.
Seriously though I would be more even if the L88 could’ve raced a new Z06. That badass 427 looked like it was being sprayed all the way down the track!
There was a L88 (1969) in the Newpaper ads (remember those) back in the late '70's for $6,000 it was during the fuel shortage, and we had fuel line at the gas stations. You could get all kind of big blocks relatively cheap. The word of the day was MPG (or acronym). In PA we could only get gas on certain days, (depended on your registration sticker number was odd or even) miss those days. Back to the L88 now that would have been an investment, since I'm going to retire in the next 10 years,
It was the same here in Ca. So many big blocks were pulled out and in went a 2bbl sb for dailies.
THere are more numbers matching BB cars than were ever made lol
That 10.99 made that respectable 12.69 run look like a 14.00 run! Wow , that driver's done this before !
That’s the crazy part… The Camaro ran very well, but the Corvette is just an absolute monster.
@@CarsAndZebras 👍
@@CarsAndZebras big block that screams like a small block. This reminds me that gm had a recall on motor mounts cause the small block was light weight but would RIP apart brand new motor mounts. GM's answer was a cable lanyard wrapped around the upper A frame of the suspension cause the motors put out so much power for their weight. The big blocks normally didn't have this problem except for the L78 / L89 / and as you call it the MONSTER OF A L88 ! Just a flash back moment for me . Oh yeah, the L88 / 430 hp option was so much more expensive than the tri power 435hp. Kinda a giveaway for what you were getting ! It’s a quick car. I believe the same owner has a twin L88 that runs 9s on biasply street tires.
That L88 was a rocket!
There’s nothing better than pre 80s American engineering. We have taken the feel out of everything now.
Sounded like sombodys clutch was slipping going to the finish line. That vett smoked the slowmaro at the light, squatted and took off with great traction.
Those L88 cars were very very nasty especially on the street.
Man that camaro was snoozin on the line
Maybe, but it doesn’t really matter. These were time trial races, so the clock doesn’t start until the car moves.
Back in the days before every car had an overdrive transmission, a 3.08 or 2.73 gear was the only way to get top end and L-88s were intended for road racing more than drag racing. A C3 has a lot working against it in a drag race. The brutally heavy brakes and also heavy IRS add nothing, only slow it down.
Never owned or drove a 69 L88 but I'd love to own one... they been my dream car for a long time...
Get any 69, 454 block and proper crank much easier/cheaper.
That Camaro was fast, but that Corvette is on a whole other level of fast. Holy crap!
Why does the L88 have a radio antenna if it was radio delete? somethings fishy here
Wow a 10:99, I’d like to see it with slicks and some gears in the 5 range. It sounded like the clutch was slipping after the finish line which is why I say more gear and clutches. Does anyone know how fast a pure stock with exception to slicks the L88 ran???
Low 11s. If you search “L88” on the channel you’ll find another video of a Pure Stock L88 with street tires that runs mid-high 11s. Slicks would definitely shave off a few tenths
This corvette had the 3 speed auto
There was no clutch slipping, the L88s came with twin disc clutches, but this car had an automatic anyway.
Makes one wonder what the top-end would've been with 2:87's??
I really love the Gen 5 Camaros. Ive had to talk myself out of buying one multiple times.
