@@AymanBmakes more sense in the books, aegon and Aemond both trap her so she can’t escape, aegon fights meleys and the vhegar shows up on top of her and they 2v1 her.
*She didn't retreat because the battle had not been won. She came to protect the castle. Cole's army was still there and Vaghar was still alive. To retreat would mean you abandoned those in the castle fighting in your name!*
Also I like to think that she was thinking of her grandchildren, that inevitably would have to face vhagar after that with daemon gone in the riverlands. vhagar got wounded so they might keep her back for a while now because of that
Rhaeyny's arc starting with the death of her daugther shows what disgusted she was with this was, her demeanor while she was coming back for another round was chilling. It was like she was already dead, and it's because of these dumb violent kids
Also I believe it was Daemon who pointed out that she could've ended it all when she confronted the Greens last season. Since then there have been several deaths and tragedy so she felt responsible to try and put an end to it this time, knowing the risks...

Reaenys was trying to end the whole war by taking out Aemon and Vhagar or die trying.

The book mentions that Aegon had a close bond with his dragon Sunfyre, who was the most beautiful dragon ever seen in the world. You can see it in the way Sunfyre affectionately but gently butts his muzzle against Aegon's chest, and Aegon smiles happily. I think Aegon loves Sunfyre more than anyone else.
There is one thing A LOT of people really seems to miss. Aemond / Cole didnt tell him anything about their plan or trap. Aegon was convinced Vhagar stayed in the city and there is only gonna be small siege without any black dragon. He wanted to help them and instead he got caught right in the middle of green's trap while on on top of that aemond instead of helping him not only waited he even attacked him. Sorry but there is nothing you can do in that scenario if your own team is against you. Sunfyre is beast considering his young age but it's literally against meleys, dragon twice (if not more) his size and more experienced

I’m glad y’all got it. People keep asking why Rhaenys turned back and she went out there to defend that stronghold. If she gave up again and ran from a fight they would not respect that.
They put Aegon on the throne against his wishes, just to tell him he’s a disappointment who needs to sit around and no nothing.
I honestly feel for Aegon, nobody has has ever cared for him or tried to show him the way…the only living being that truly loves him is Sunfyre, and I hope they delve deeper into their bond in the future. Aegon and Sunfyre’s connection is one of the most fascinating aspects of the book.
For real. Alicent was right about him but she's more to blame. She's the reason he turned out this way and he even tells her he doesn't want this but she insists and now she blames him.

Agreed. They believed they could control Aegon and further their agenda whereas they would never be able to control Rhaenyra. Daemond recognized this as well and wanted his brother to put him on the throne. Viserys knew his daughter would have made the fairest and most wise ruler. She would have kept the peace.

Sunfyre is such a good boy. He got his stomach torn, still flew, went for the neck, and turned to land on said chest to save his rider.

Aegon showing up was the the straw that broke the camel's back. Aemond thinks aegon is trying to steal his glory, Aemond wanted to fight rhaenys alone all by himself.
Aemond shooting down his brother was premeditated after that brothel scene. That was not a matter of if, but when. Especially when Aemond and Otto had that "talk" about how Aegon can't keep himself in control.

she kept going back because she knew that she has one of the biggest dragons and meleys had been to war. even if she doesn't kill vhaegar, if she seriously injures vhaegar, someone else like daemon could come along and have a better chance at killing vhaegar.
she knew what the outcome might be, but when she thought it was just her and aegon, she was tearing him up and expected to come out fine. and if it was her vs vhaegar 1v1, she could have killed vhaegar as well. but the 2v1 is what fucked her up.

I was saying a 1v1 with vhagar woulda been interesting, she woulda lost in the end the massive size difference but also aemond is not no dummy..but she woulda atleast wounded for sure.
@@bboy95ify nah in the books we know that meleys is one of the fastest as well as one of the largest dragons, faster than vhaegar and caraxes. vhaegar at this point is 181yrs old. meleys is in her 50's-60's which is considered dragon prime. she would have fucked vhaegar up
@@bboy95ify In the books it's said Meleys could have had a chance against Vhagar alone, yes, Vhagar is double the size, but Meleys is in her prime and is fast as fuck (the fastest according to records) but it was a 2v1 in the books, and even then, Meleys took down Sunfyre before dying, so yes, Rhaenys had a chance to win in a fair fight, but they made Vhagar sneak attack (AGAIN) in the show to justify winning the way it did.
Meleys never stood a chance of beating Vhagar in a 1v1.
So many people aren't understanding what happened in this fight. Meleys didn't knock vhagar down, it's actually the exact opposite. Vhagar was the one who brought the fight down to the ground
As vhagar and meleys flew towards each other, Vhagar grabbed Meleys by the leg and broke it, then began dragging meleys down to the ground. Vhagar knew meleys wouldn't be able to take flight again with a broken leg, which would've made her a sitting duck.
As they got closer to the ground Vhagar had to release meleys leg so she could start slowing her own descent rate, thus cushioning her landing.
Meleys almost touched the ground, but she had just enough time/altitude to flap her wings to create lift and save herself from impact with the ground.

I've seen a LOT of GoT & HotD reactors and you guys are unequivocally one of the most thoughtful reactors on CZcams. It's like I'm in the room with you guys the way you touch on every important moments, metaphors and character developments that the show leaves me stewing in after each episode. Thank you for sharing your passion with us!
P.S. I'm a book reader for both GoT & HotD and can confirm that reading it and watching it are entirely different experiences. E.g., the music! God, the music!

Like if you align with the Queen and you can’t count on her team and her dragons coming to help and commit 100%, then what’s the point? Just align with the side with the bigger dragon and army at that point if Team Black is going to bail as soon as Aemond and Vhagar show up

That last look her dragon gave her before they looped back around was heartbreaking. They communicated without having to talk out loud and even then she always whispered to her dragon. The last look meant were here to do the damn thing and they went out like warriors. Much respect for both of them.

I know the Aegon the conquerer misunderstanding feels like why the war started, but it's not. The war started because they did not want a woman on the throne. They were going to proceed with the usurping after viserys regardless of alicent.

Aemond got his get back, he’s going to be a problem. I was pissed when Rhaenys died but she had that soldier’s heart.
You have to admire the the trap laid out by Cole and Aemond - had Aegon not interfered, Rhaenys and Meleys would have been taken out with very few losses (Most of the forces present under the King's army were snatched from Rhaenyra, so a bigger loss for her). Interesting to see Criston Cole's devotion to Aegon as he was the only one to race to his fallen King, whereas we see another parallel of Daemon and Aemond, in that he is a 'rogue prince' and behaving just like Deamon did to Viserys in Season 1.
Honestly, I think Meleys had a shot against Vhagar after seeing the fight. She held her own against two dragons, and when Sunfyre was down, she really clawed into Vhagar. Vhagar’s huge, but that’s not always great because she’s old and slow, while Meleys is quicker and more agile. Plus, Rhaenys is an experienced rider. After watching the fight, I don’t see Vhagar as such a big threat anymore. If Daemon had been there with Caraxes, they could’ve definitely taken Vhagar out. Also, Vhagar sneak attacking seems unrealistic for such a big dragon, but maybe it’s just due to fighting experience.
They needed to let Aegon in on the plan, he knew nothing of it. He thought it was a small siege. And I think he played right onto Aemonds second plan as he kept poking the bear on Aegons insecurities
@@saroabd4437Vhagar snatched her right out of the air incredibly quickly though… she didn’t really hold her own as fast as Meleys was, and - scratches won’t do much, you’d need to really get vhagar deep to take her down. We see Sunfyre almost not have a chest and he was still flying- that just shows it’ll take that much more against Vhagar.
@@LS13.True but the book did imply Meleys and Rhaenys had a chance if it wasn't for taking both sunfyre and vhagar. Here her mistake was not anticipating vaghars moves more quickly, because they were able to manuever around being grabbed.

Always remember the portion of dragons on each side. Team Green only has four dragons but Vhagar is the real problem. Even if she couldn't kill Vhagar, severely injuring her is significant because maybe then one of the smaller dragons on Team Black could defeat her later. At the end of the day, all dragon riders are soldiers, no matter how high born. A soldier cannot abandon his post and a dragon rider shouldn't just abandon a fight, especially in this case. The battle was to take the castle. Even with Sunfyre and Aegon down, Aemond/Vhagar were still roaming. Rhaenys/Meleys went to protect the castle, no matter who was there.

Aemond did not bait his brother into coming, nor did he make a plan with him. If you recall, when Aemond saw Aegon fly overhead, he was pissed. Aegon was a fly in the ointment, not a planned conspirator. Also, Aegon was happy to see Aemond and Vhagar because he was losing to Rhaenys and Meleys. He had no idea Aemond was going to be there, but he was relieved to see him because he thought he was saved.
I feel like Rhaenys wanted to die. She thinks her son is dead, her daughter is definitely dead, and she knows that her husband has another child from an affair. She's just tired. She figured, " If I take out Vhagar, I win. If I die, I die a warrior's death "
I dont think she WANTED to, but i think she suspected she would. The chance to take out both Aegon and Aemond in one go was a big risk with big reward, she rolled the dice and did her duty, and died as a Dragonrider should

Prince Aemon, Rhaenys' father, was also killed in a military campaign. (he was the rider of Caraxes before Daemon, while his brother Baelon the Brave, father of Daemon and Viserys, rode Vhagar, and Baelon's sister-wife Princess Alyssa rode Meleys). Sadly, when a dragon changes riders, old alliances are apparently relegated to the past in favor of the current rider's desires.

Tully is Catelyn Stark's and her sister Lysa Arryn's family.
Lysa had at least some reason to become pretty crazy; they didn't mention it in the show, but her father tricked her into aborting the young Littlefinger's unborn child (gave her what she thought was tea, it was an abortion-inducing potion); which was at least partially responsible for Lysa's inability to produce living or healthy children with her late husband Jon Arryn (who she helped to kill because he had said he planned to send little Robin away to be fostered with Stannis).
House Tully is one of the Great Houses of Westeros. Catelyn Stark was the daughter of Hoster Tully, lord of House Tully of Riverrun. House Tully is an ancient family with the blood of the First Men (like the Starks and a few other Houses, prestigious in Westeros).
Knowing the history book I knew this was the end for Rhaenys and Melys. Still it was sad to see. RIP the Queen that never was

What makes F&B interesting is how Martin wrote it. They’re not POV chapters unlike the GoT books. Written by in universe characters years after the Dance took place, so it makes even the reader have to take the info with a grain of salt because theirs different accounts of what happened.

Harrenhall has strong influences from the old gods. House Blackwood still follows the Old Gods as one of the few if not only houses outside the North to do so. The Three-eyed Crow in the original Game of Thrones show is a Blackwood. House Blackwood is on of the houses that is nearly on par with the Great Houses for it's importance to the story.
All the stuff going down at Harrenhall and with Alys Rivers/Daemon should probably be taken as similar to the mystical side of things that happened to Bran and Jon Snow. Magic is real. The blood of Wierwood trees are soaked into the walls of Harrenhall.
Rhaenys was there to protect Rooks Rest. If she left, the Greens would call Rhaenyra a child killer who won't protect your castle. More people would cite that as a reason to follow Aegon.
Having a map with the houses on it for reference isn't a bad thing. It helps to keep track of the many, many moving parts.

George did so good writing the outline of Daemon’s kids in Fire & Blood, I really hope they get more screentime. I like how he paralleled them to the Stark kids with Baela/Arya Rhaena/Sansa Aegon/Bran Viserys/Rickon and even Harwin’s son Jace with Jon
but Daemon is so different from Ned 😂😂 Rhaena’s egg is supposed to be pink I hope they don’t change that and actually give her a pink one that’s the only dragon I was looking forward to. She named the pink one Morning to juxtapose Baela’s Moondancer and I thought it was so cute

The thing about Fire & Blood is the book isnt traditional canon bc it was written from 3rd party biased maester accounts decades after the actual events, so the changes are moot. GRRM has stated that the Show is the true canonized story for HoTD 🎉

I believe Rhaenys was of the mindset that even if she died, at least she can wound Vhagar in the process. Everyone knows Vhagar is a problem purely because of her size. If Rhaenys could damage Vhagar enough to keep Vhagar out the war, death would have been worth it for her.

Anyway, Melys was the largest dragon for Team Black, so I think it was their best defense against Vaghar. Although she may not have won, Rhaneys needed to hurt Vaghar as much as possible, and she did some damage that's why she kept turning back. Also, Aemond can ascend to the throne because Aegon no longer has an heir. If Aegon is dead (don't think he is), the war wouldn't necessarily end. Aemond would just take his place and Rhanerya would still be fighting for the throne, so taking him out would be beneficial.
I also don't think Aemond was planning to kill Aegon or going after him like you all are saying. He had a plan with Cole to lure out a member of team Black and take that person out (hopefully Rhanerya or her heir Jace). Just because Aegon was in the way he wasn't going to change the plan. The issue of constant disrespect from Aegon towards Aemond definitely made burning Aegon up a sweet plus.
Rhaenys had so many opportunities since last season. The monster under the floor during Aegon's coronation. The chance to double team Aemond with Demon while Her Grace was MIA. The two opportunities she turned back to fight.
Rhaenys couldn't retreat, she was doing what her Queen commanded her to do and was willing to die to fulfill her duty. One thing I can say with full confidence if she had agreed to go with Daemon to attack Aemond even with Vagar they would've whooped his ass. Aemonds only advantage in a straight up1v1 is size and endurance of Vagar.
I hope to god that before the show is over we get a shot of the Hightower army marching to war with the green citadel beacon in the background + Epic music!
It's like a large budget film. The dragon battle and build up to it was Top tier. Probably my most favorite HOTD/GOT episode ever
In the books Aegon and Sunfyre had literally one of the closest bonds of all dragon riders who ever existed.. Poor boy, poor dragons don't deserves all this family drama. Honestly, this season is owned by Tom Glynn-Carney. Even when Aegon was powerless in the small council scene, he totally owned the scene. It’s bizarre because the writers clearly want the audience to like Team Black more than Green, but they made the Greens way more interesting to watch. Rhaenyra spends basically all her screen time wringing her hands and being indecisive, Daemon is off having a tantrum in the middle of nowhere and doesn’t have much character beyond “I’m angry”, and Rhaenys kind of just stands around looking smug/condescending. (except for the showdown ofc, RIP Meleys and Rhaenys)

I think the reason Aegon is so upset about not being listened to is because as Corlys once said "History doesn't remember blood, it remembers names." If he sits back and does nothing all everyone will speak about is how great Cole was in battle and how formidable Ameond was on Vhagar - just like they were saying at the council meeting before he left. He will be forgotten in history if he cannot make a notable contribution. I actually felt bad for him. He didn't want this, he never did. They never even trained him secretly to do the job correctly if they wanted him to have it. And now they belittle him for not knowing enough. He only started wanting to be King during the coronation because the people applauded and praised him, something he never got at home from his family. Alicent is a terrible mother. She didn't even comfort him when his son died and now when she actually speaks to him it is only to make him feel useless and worthless. I know people say that is because she got that from her father but that's not true because other people can go through those same experiences and choose to be much better as parents than their own parents were to them. Simply because they understand how bad it made them feel growing up in a household like that - they overcompensate for it. She is cruel because she wants to be nothing more.
The thing about those who read the book is that even the book makes it clear it's not the exact experience of what happened. The book is basically a bunch of Maesters collecting stories, hearsay, and conjecture about what happened. So all we book readers can rely on is that the broad strokes are the only thing we can rely on
