How BAD is a $80 Crawler? WPL-C14

  • In this episode of 10th Scale Garage, we find out how bad (or good) of an RC crawler the WPL c14 is. The 14th scale RTR RC crawler is definitely cheap, but does have some pretty amazing headlines. Even the aftermarket is supported with tons of upgrades to make it even better, but how is it in stock form? Let's unbox it, take it crawling and find out!

My c24 has been a great base for modding and as it is so cheap you're never scared to screw something up. And it has never let me down, occasional niggles but still going strong.

I've built and rebuilt 5 of these, built 1 to a monster, my stock with light mods was best (2 speed and better esc). I stopped buying them because the axles kept slipping and I lost the locked diff pretty.
My SCX24 Bronco out drives my WPL in all situations except when larger size is needed for the line.
Thanks for the video, wpl is a good intro line for starters.

Years ago I stepped away from the hobby because of lack of time. Now that I'm retired/disabled, I have all the time but limited budget. I have est. $150 ea. stuck into my 3 WPLs. Best part is they're big enough to tackle the outside and small enough to crawl around inside on furniture or a stack of pillows🥰. On my C-24, I've installed a Bluetooth speaker in the camper top that's hinged on the tailgate. It's my favorite hiking buddy after my dog.

You need to buy a metal kit and put some dependable electronics in the truck and then it will have some performance and durability. The RTR versions are weak.

I have a C24-1 slightly modded at the moment but mostly stock. I have suspension and tires on the way which helps a lot with any trail truck/crawler rig. The steering links are also in need of attention, but the stock setup is enough to get up and over some moderate rocks and dirt hills. The biggest thing besides the bouncy suspension that is holding it back from steep climbing, is it needs more weight in the front like a weighted spare tire or a metal bumper upgrade. Those are like $10. Also waterproofed the board and where the wires are bare soldered onto the motor to help with water crossings. Already ran it up to the bottom of the cab and it went through like a champ. I also added panel lines and looking to load up the bed with stuff to make it custom. They come cheap, but not so much after $150 in upgrades to make it good. Bottom line is like others have said: if you don't like tinkering with your cars, spend more on a rig that already has all the goodies and avoid WPL

WPL vehicles from the official site are leaps and bounds better than the first versions the chassis are thicker steel . The drive shafts are thicker and use set screws and are not just pushed on to the pinion yokes like the first versions, and they all come with a 180 motor now instead of the tiny 130 that the first versions had.

Bit more money and only in kit form but my channel has some footage of what the metal version is capable of. Also, their B-series of trucks are leaf sprung and move very scale.

Haha. Awesome unboxing! I have a C24, and really just got it off Banggood because they gave me a ridiculous offer to make a first order. After getting it, I realized that for around $80 you can get all the metal upgrades and a 2 speed, what I like is the hard bodies, I'm building mine now and in the end I'll have about the cost of my SCX24 Bronco new in it. It's a weird size and the wheels are weird sized (1.0 are too small and 1.55 are too big looking), but otherwise, they're fun little trucks to build and customize.

Definitely a bang for the buck, had my C24-1 2 years ago and did alot of modifications to it, turned it from a trail crawler to a prerunner type. The aftermarket parts are cheap and available, I actually used an aftermarket d12 gearbox for it so it runs so fast compared to it's stock form.

I would love to get the axial scx 10 basecamp, since i have the scx24, i feel i want to get a bigger scale, but the scx24 is a great performer if not the best

  • @thibster5590

I have the B36KM series, which I believe is the best WPL has to offer. But even the KM kit didn't have metal gear servo so that was its weak point and stripped out when I tried a little side hill crawling. But there is a lot of aftermarket support and I purchased a stronger fully metal gear servo which works great for under $13
Honestly I love the little trucks but they are designed for trailing not rock crawling, IMO.

These are cool and frustrating! There is no end to the mods which are fun…and frustrating. Biggest issue, stripping axle gears. We have a bunch of these trucks with different mods and same with the MN brand. Probably not going to keep buying new WPL or MN models. I would rather get the RGT 1/16th scale wrangler or defender that came out a bit ago or like you said the LC/FMS 1/18 scale trucks which can crawl and climb without stripping axle gears. Nice review. You should definitely your C-14 and let us know if you find bombproof gears. Take care 👍🏾

You my friend, should try building one of their kits! Talk about terrible instructions...there may as well have been no instructions! Seriously though, it was a fun build and the truck itself (metal kit) has been surprisingly durable considering the abuse it has taken. The WPL product line has a lot of shortcomings but really are more a model first and an RC second. For me that is the attraction. They are a good platform for creativity. You can paint/detail them like a static model AND you can customize the performance like an RC car/truck.

It’s been a bit of a nightmare to get all the aftermarket stuff to work together. Just switched it to an axle mount servo, now there’s only like 1/4” of front suspension, so I’ll be taking that back off and figuring something else out with it. I'm new to the hobby and still trying to figure out where the sweet spot is in terms of value for money. I have an SCX24 which I've spent about as much as the price of the car on upgrades, and I wonder if I'd have been better off spending my money on a stock car that costs twice as much as the SCX24 in the first place.
This WPL is about the cheapest in its genre, and I know from other hobbies that the cheapest option is pretty much never the sweet spot. I mean you can upgrade it, but then it's not the cheapest option anymore...
Yeah the Base Camp will probably be nuch better than the C14, but then again it's almost 10 times the price!! Meanwhile there's the FTX Ravine, which is about 3 times the price of a C14.
I'd imagine that a C14 with $100 worth of upgrades would not perform as well as a Ravine, while a C14 with $400 worth of upgrades _may_ perform as well as a Base Camp?
It's a tough nut to crack!

Otherwise, the SCX24 is a good starting place. They're comparatively reasonably priced, good quality, tons of support, compact and portable.
