  • #darbarfestival | Niladri Kumar’s virtuosic take on the afternoon Raag Bhimpalasi, running up and down his sitar’s fretboard at lightning speed at Darbar Festival 2014.
    Learn more about the music:
Niladri Kumar is known for his expansive modern sitar style, stretching the boundaries of classical music. Trained under his father, a disciple of Ravi Shankar, he was recognised as a prodigy. He has since developed an extraordinary technical command of his instrument, complete with dextrous double stops, whispering string bends, and rapid taans [fast improvised lines]. He makes forays into film composition and is the inventor of the ‘zitar’ - a hybrid of electric guitar and sitar. Today he tours extensively with Zakir Hussain’s groups as well as a solo artist. -Explaining his unique sound | • Video
Bhimpalasi is an afternoon raga, said to evoke sringara [attraction, romantic love]. It uses the notes of Kafi thaat, with an aroha [ascent] of nSgmPnS and an avroh [descent] of SnDPmgRS. Characteristically, Dha and Re only appear in the descending line, and tend to be approached from the notes immediately above. Ma is the vadi [king note]. It is similar in shape to the Western Dorian mode, and the closest Carnatic raga is Abheri. Hear a playlist of Bhimpalasi performances here: • Amazing Sarod | Raag B...

If a few brief minutes of Niladri aren't enough…watch his full 65-minute performance of Raag Bhimpalasi in pristine HD on the Darbar Player, along with dozens of other captivating concerts: www.darbarplayer.com/videos/nildari-kumar-pandit-shubhankar-banerjee-raag-bhimpalasi
We'd like to upload everything for free - but filming, editing, and hosting cost money, and we’re a small not-for-profit organisation. Signing up to the Darbar Player costs about the same as a couple of coffees a month ($5), which we hope is an excellent price for such a wealth of unique music.

Why do people comment when they have limited knowledge of music..Either they don't understand Indian Classical Music or they don't understand CZcams!
First of all, this video is just a section of the whole performance !
Secondly, this performance is in Dhamaar Taal which is a Taal of 14 beats actually used in Dhrupad. Dhrupad has very close association with Laykari and so is he doing in this particular video. Thirdly, sometimes it depends on the artist's mood, especially instrumentalists and in that too Sitarists & Sarodists particularly, whether they want to expand the notes or will they play with rhythm for a particular performance. AND fourthly, those showing too much Gyaan in the comments, here in this particular section of the performance, he is doing laykari in Taans. And it is a general principle that Raga Rules fall weak in taans. Even crucked and twisted Ragas develop a simple chalan while doing taans.
So please STOP criticizing, and develop a habit of enjoying the performance. I hope the so-called Vidwaans get my point in their heads!!

Not really. If you were actually paying attention he was playing each time with a different variation, he's really feeling the space between each sum. Different combinations of the notes in the phrase, a few detours from the phrase, varying levels of emphasis on different notes as he the hits sympathetic strings. It's not as rudimentary as you're making it sound...

So u dont have any idea of indian classical music
Here no open challenges r done, only the soul is seen.In rock music its seen, how fast u can play how loud u can play.
So ur whole idea of challenge to play fast faster and fastest will work over there. In original indian classical (veena the ancient membrr of sitar) u cant even play fast things.... It is such..
I have seen people crying after listening to bhimpalasi it is so divine.
U can play fast in raag kafi, bhairavi... But this is a slow paced soulful raag. THIS is what others r telling.

Interesting points... Highest quality ICM concert in the world held in foreign land!! Also we have missed most parts of this recital, this is only 7 minutes somewhere in the middle where focus is more on laykari and taan development which tabla players would appreciate. Niladri is one of the best currently, be good to hear the whole concert which I guess is available for sale. The Sitar BTW is set to Pt Ravi Shankar gharana hence would sound different to ones who mostly listen to Shahid Pervez.

Growth and change is critical to any form of music. And experimentation is key to this. It might be seen as bad and once in a while it might become a work of true art. Allow the form to grow. Or else Carnatic music would still be all of Indian classical music and the very idea of Hindustani music wouldn't have happened. We are living in a closely connected world of change never experienced before where influences come from all directions, its only human to act according to these changes.

It is difficult to imagine that the artist is playing Sitar or driving a sports car. Classical music provides a soothing effect on mind similar to meditation. Perhaps one can remember that Halim Zafar had similar kind of play with high speed and consequently less number of listeners compared to greats like Nikhil Banerjee, Ali Akbar khan.

Strange sounding sitar... Am I correct to say that this particular sitar has a very weak Jawari sound effect? Almost a sarod-like sound... Weird.

I though it very flat sounding and lacking resonance . He certainly can play but much is lost in the flash showmanship , not the true soul od raga

    • @KevinDunning108
      @KevinDunning108 Před 7 lety +5

He plays a lot with consideration of kharraj, or lower notes, for the audience he is playing for, knowing they are erudite (they know the cello from the Western approach, etc.). There is another video with elements of this performance in alap, and he shows that consideration in that. It's actually near surbahar playing, or it could be said, is an aspect of sitar most sitar players are not as comfortable displaying. As usual, the performance makes most sense if you were present for the alap.

    Peace
