The X-Files is best experienced through VHS late at night, or on a rainy day.

Rainy days are definitely the best for watching x files. It matches with the creepy tone and where they actually shot the series in Vancouver which is almost always cloudy and rainy.

I remember many years ago my brother coming across a bunch of VHS tapes he'd recorded with stuff like the X-Files, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Saturday morning cartoons, etc.
Man, was it a blast rewatching a bunch of that stuff from when it aired for the first time. He had the premieres of the 90s X-Men cartoon and The Tick cartoon.
I feel so far away from all that now. Like almost a physical distance from a place I want to get back to but know I never can, like Brigadoon or something like that.
I miss who we all were then.

Man i remember watching the pilot and being blown away with how like a cinematic experience it was (bear in mind i came later to the show because of my age, i joined around season 3 and caught up with boxsets) This was the early 90's, and to see a science fiction niche genre show just explode, and i mean explode, this show was fucking huge. And whenever you think of the 90's, the X-files is something that dominates the TV landscape.
Season 1 was so dark and disturbing, so interesting, exciting and entertaining. You were glued to the screen and these 2 characters. Their chemistry both professional and personal was so natural and powerful. The way the gender stereotypes were flipped between them, with Scully still being the woman and Mulder the man but Mulder the more empathic, emotional and intuitive one to Scully's stoic, rational, scientific mindset.
But yet the tenderness, respect and compassion between the 2. It just wasn't something you would see. Such care and detail went into this show, and the way they weaved real life urban legends and conspiracy theories into the show was genius. It had everyone talking and is honestly one of the best TV shows in the history of TV.

Hold up... besides the first VHS and DVD releases of the show, did TV watchers EVER know the name of the episode they were watching? The commercials don't say it, nor the beginning or end credits of the actual show. Did the physical TV guide list it? As in: X-Files ep. 142 "Hungry"...?

    • @mgarcia386

I’m sure the TV Guide you bought at the store listed the title, though I never bought those. I used to get the local Sunday newspaper and it had a more basic TV guide included and it listed the episode names.

Does anyone remember the teaser to season one that only said “The X-Files tv series based on/taken from government FBI files” or something to that affect but it definitely mentioned it was ‘actual government files’?? I seriously remember seeing a black screen with the name of the series and that same voice saying something along those lines in the background. Because I when they stopped saying it I kept wondering why they stopped right when the series started. Anybody???

For anyone looking for a show with two leads that have the same chemistry as Mulder and Scully, I highly recommend a series from Germany entitled Babylon Berlin. It takes place in the late 1920s and early 1930s in Germany, with plotlines that may not be supernatural, but definitely filled with political intrigue and machinations that draw in Gereon and Charlotte (the main characters). Unfortunately, we all know what happens eventually.
