    Strip off the chrome to bare steel, copper plate the steel, then gold plate the copper!
    Standard process for plating gold to steel.
    Copper and gold are chemical cousins and have a great affinity for each other.
    Copper adheres well to steel, and provides an anodic rust-protection.
    Chromium has a hard oxide coating that can prevent the chemical reaction that is metal plating. [OK, huge simplificatopn: Electrons in plating batch get exchanged for metal ions. Metal ions need an oxide-free surface for proper bonding. An immersion batch excludes oxygen, wipers not so much]

    • @valynazvalkynaz5375
      @valynazvalkynaz5375 Před 8 lety

      +Michael Baker he can rub and wash off the cyanide. some if not alot of people back in ancient times did electroplating as well for silverware since you cant really eat with a pure 100% gold knife due to gold being a soft metal so they'd electroplate it.

    • @PatriotCoinRings
      @PatriotCoinRings Před 8 lety

      +Valynaz Valkynaz That may be true, I'm not sure how much of cyanide would come off but you don't have to use cyanide for electroplating gold either so it would be interesting to see how a commercial company does this and whether they use cyanide or not? As for saying it's okay because it was done in "ancient times", well, lead was widely used in ancient times as well thus resulting in mad hatters disease and we only recently stopped using asbestos, etc just to mention only a couple things we have since learned from. Just because something was done in history doesn't mean it's okay today.

    • @valynazvalkynaz5375
      @valynazvalkynaz5375 Před 8 lety +1

      Michael Baker wasn't mad hatters disease mostly due to the amount of mercury in lots of hats back then?

    • @PatriotCoinRings
      @PatriotCoinRings Před 8 lety +1

      I'm going off memory from science back when I was in school and certain that the lead originally used in plumbing was the reason for many becoming very ill and the reason plumbing used now has since been switched to copper, pvc, abs or galvanized. It's also the same reason lead is now not used on children toys or in wall paint however you may be very well correct that it was specifically mercury within the lead? However looking it up online, I do see a different story on mad hatters disease like you mentioned about mercury having been used in the bands of hats back in the day. I'll look into this further just out of curiosity.

    Cody, what went wrong with the bumper-plating attempt was the Chrome itself. The Chrome is electroplated in place in nearly the same process you tried. Now, if you had stripped the Chrome off, and gotten to the "base" metal, I believe it would have worked.

      +Kevin S I had the same thought. Plating over plating doesn't work that well. Lol. Give it something to hold onto though, like a more porous and conductive base metal and it could work.I was thinking of it like paint too. Gotta rough up the base for the paint to adhere properly. Who would want to do that to a perfectly good chrome bumper though? So I don't blame him there. His way was totally reversible and now we know, it doesn't work, thank's to Cody. "I have not failed. I have only found 10,000 ways, not to do something". LMAO!

      chrome plating and stainless steel need deactivating before trying electroplating

    • @duckmyass
      @duckmyass Před 6 lety +1

      It isn't plating over plating it is the metal that you are trying to plate that is the issues. Some metals just don't like to be plated with gold, like aluminum you need to basically plate it with zinc, then copper and then you can put gold on top of that... But chrome is one of those metals that can't go straight to gold.

  • @8Jory
    @8Jory Před 9 lety +8

    I can't be 100% sure as we don't gold plate things at my work (we chrome plate) but leaving the chrome on the bumper and trying to plate over it will likely give you problems. Chrome doesn't like having things plated over it in my experience they tend to peel back off. You could try stripping the chrome off with a caustic solution with a positive charge on the bumper but that would permanently commit you to this. You'd be left with the nickel layer underneath which is where your shine mostly comes from anyway. the chrome is an extremely thin layer to protect the nickel underneath. Maybe test it out with something smaller that's chrome plated? Would need to be steel though as plating processes for steel and aluminum are a bit different. Just buff the part after and it will shine right up.
    All that being said I don't work on the steel plating line, I work on the aluminum plating line chroming Harley Davidson parts.

Most are brass plated with silver, my mouth piece is such. I was wondering if it would be possible to electroplate gold on to the underlying brass without damaging the silver and brass, it's just an idea but I would like to know just in case I decide to try this

      Here in my garage, just bought this new '87 Ford Ranger here. It’s fun to drive up here in the Utah hills. But you know what I like more than chrome? Gold. In fact, I’m a lot more proud of this new gold-plated butter knife that I had to get installed to spread two thousand new tubs of butter that I bought. It’s like the billionaire Warren Buffett says, “the more you spread, the better your bread.”

Yeah most fail, but you do them anyway and follow the basic science (and explain it too). No matter that for many things ppl often need years and decades of experience to get it right. But hey in a post apocalypic enviroment you would do splendid with your various skills.

    One thing they do when electroplating is this: Metal builds up at the point of the highest potential. And it actually causes positive feedback because now it is raised, like more pointy, so the potential is higher. So there will actually end up being needles deposited on the item to be plated! Which is no good, obviously.
    So they put extra cations in there to compete with the metal ones, so they actually stick to the higher points and stop the metal from being deposited there somewhat, evening out the plate.
    I don't know, but I'm guessing they use something like a quantary ammonium salt. Readily available, not toxic and probably provides a large steric hinderance to other cations. Also if it is reduced, so what, it turns into the free base, which is just an oil usually. Which would likely be with a bit of agitation dissolved by it's unreduced mates, which are basically detergents. Lots of household disinfectants use these quantary ammonium salts!
    Also I know that temperature, agitation, etc, can be key.

    Probably already sorted out but make a plaster cast of the bumper, sand the inside of the cast so it leaves some space, then use emersion plating (the cast is to minimize fluid required) that's how i plate larger objects

    Truly excellent content dude!
    I would love to see you try this again with more knowledge under your belt. The reason the knife worked so well is more because it is a better conductor than chrome. Electroplating is one of the 'dark arts' that can't be properly learned through books. As an X metal finisher there were two things I could suggest that would make the difference.
    1. You don't need to use gold as your anode. We used stainless steal. You'll be able to make an anode with more surface area, which is key, if you use stainless.
    2. The resistance of chrome was also defeating you. We needed tens of thousands of amps to throw it on that bumper in the first place due to it's high resistance. Strip the chrome off and buff the nickle under it to activate it and remove oxide then try again.
    You can strip off the chrome by reversing the polarity and using a strong caustic solution. (once again, with a stainless electrode)
    Realize that anything that can oxidize IS oxidizing when exposed to air. Surface oxides prevent the plate from permabonding to the surface. So prep/buff a small area then immediately plate it. Then prep/buff another small area and plate it to minimize surface oxide.
    Gold is such a good conductor that high voltages and currents are not needed to make it work. Pretty sure we used a 12 volt rectifier and not more than a few amps. Proper preparation of the surface is more important.
    Good luck dude!
    Can't wait to see a part 2 on this one. (waiting with baited breath)
