he was a very a charismatic and well spoken man. very know for being a womanizer and such too and im sure his voice helped lol.
Castro only turned to the Soviets when he realized that instead of accepting a sovereign Cuba, the US was hell-bent on overthrowing its government. In a way, he was forced to take sides in the global cold war. The US hawks are to be blamed that Cuba joined the communist block. The constant intel warfare and the imposed economic sanctions and isolation have greatly contributed to the nation's decline into poverty.

But I'd also say that part of why Cuba joined the communist bloc was because it was a communist country, lead by a marxist, with a communist party in power. But hey, maybe the whole being communist had nothing to do with wanting to ally with other communists

My point being that whether Castro ran a regime or Batista ran a regime is irrelevant. It's kinda a buzz word to call any government you don't like a regime, since the word could just as usefully be applied to governments you like.
Oh and ps, I'm not trying to say you don't like either of those governments, but I can tell how I might come off as implying that in my comment

Whatever castro projected at anytime was never his true intentions or heart for the good of the people of cuba. So you really dont need more details because the lust for power is great, the natural ability he was blessed with and used for evil instead of good is clearly all you need to see he never really cared. This type of hatred goes deep, and can be indoctrinated .....also some get joy from watching others suffer. So those who saw the power that fidel possessed was very useful. as it was

It's called a framing device.
What I love about these is that there are two sort of parallel stories. There is a story told by the interview, and there is a story told about the interview.
It’s hard to understand the tape when that women talked about minor or insignificant details.

The cassette tape wasn't invented until 1963, and not heavily used until far after that. Some research as to the authenticity is due.
In modern language, Cassettes have become a catch-all term for all physical recordings of audio.

Countless. Castro believed in an Authoritarian social democracy with socalist aspects. Communism's simplest basis is that the working class own the means of production and only the working class. Thus there has never been a communist or socalist country, only states that say they are moving towards it with communist or socialist parties being in power. In the modern there are 5 of those Cuba, Laos, Vietnam, China and North Korea. They all differ greatly in Marxist/communist beliefs.

Thanks. Music in the beginning of this was more Spanish and Mexican than Cuban. Also, sorry the daughter made a comment suggesting that Cuba’s takeover was worse than if Baptiste stayed in power. Remember, it was American embargoes which choked the economy of Cuba, not “communism “ per se!

Normally these videos are stellar but this one is just weird, the breaks between segments are overlong in this, more so than in the other videos. I'm not sure why you'd think someone would watch an interview and would like to randomly have it cut out every 20 seconds. Also the translation sounds like it's off in this one, at 1:32 It sounds like he says "comprende" "understand" and it would make sense in context.
Interesting but maybe jumps around a little too much to get a real feel, link embedded at 5:59 for the full interview is not working also but still a appreciated video.

She misses the WHOLE point of why this interview is interesting. Besides the fact that doesn't show many meaningful parts of the actual interview... One of the most significant things about this interview is how it shows the thoughts of Fidel about the Cuban Revolution at that moment and how further down the road the ideas and values he promoted had nothing to do with this initial statements to which cubans agreed to and why supported him, and way more to do with saying what was convenient for him at each point in time... And as usual... it saddens me to see so many comments from a bunch of ignorant people that have no idea what they are talking about and still open their uninformed mouths to blurt out whatever nonsense they have heard around or had simply formed with limited information.
My father is a life long, very liberal Democrat who HATES communism with a passion. When I was growing up in 60s and 70s, that meant he had nothing good to say about any Russian leader, whether it was Khrushchev, Brezhnev, Andropov, Chemenko, or even Gorbachev, who enjoyed a bit of celebrity here in the U.S. I was on the fence about communism, mostly because the adults around me seemed to irrationally hate the mention of the word, and I liked to play the devil's advocate whenever I got into political discussions with "Pop", which is what all of us kids called him during our hilariously animated talks. But Pop REALLY hated Castro. No one could ever say anything good about the man in my father's presence. He never explained why he had such enimity toward him, other than the fact that he was a Communist. He loved Cuban jazz, rum and cigars, but Castro should've have been used as shark bait in the Gulf of Tonkin, as far as Pop was concerned.
So I was shocked to read the full transcript (blankonblank.org) of this interview and discover that right after Cuba's revolution, Castro was talking about borrowing "capital" from the U.S. and other Western countries! What? You mean he WASN'T a communist at first? I had no idea that his original plan was to secure loans from the U.S. and Western European countries, use the money to build up their domestic agriculture and related businesses, and pay off the principal and interest while keeping the technology within Cuba. Seems like a very good plan, but I sincerely doubt that it would have worked. Private investors would have demanded more interest on their loans and an increasingly high percentage of their goods for lower prices. Maybe he realized that during subsequent discussions with the financiers. I don't know if that was the deciding factor for him becoming a Communist, but it seems to be a logical deduction. For the record, I don't like Communism, either. I just loved arguing with my father.
Bruno56 One of my former co-workers used to derisively call Stalin "Uncle Joe", and loved to talk about how that "uncle" killed more Russians than the Nazis. And several of my students in the Writing Center were Russian students, and a number of them had to write about their pre-immigration experience. Yikes. They weren't even thought of when Stalin was alive, yet the ghost of that butcher haunted them through their parents and grandparents.
Literally nobody cares about her description of her grandfather. She means nothing and takes away from the story. This is supposed to be an interview between her grandfather and Castro, but instead it's her describing what she has from her grandfather. This should be retitled "Things my grandfather owned"

The audio editing of Castro is really irritatingly bad in the first half. Repeatedly cutting him off in the middle of a thought. The editor shoves in this woman in the middle for no good reason. It's almost like it's about her and her grandfather most of the time. So, great work, obviously, for a "Fidel Castro: the Lost Interview" video.
What part didn't you understand from Castro's remarks about Trujillo?
The only thing I hate about this is the lady who talks the entire time. If she wasn't there and it was just the interview it would be infinitely better.

I was very surprised to see this video pop up and was excited to hear an interview with Castro from 1959, yes the girl talks a lot, and she talks a lot about stuff that I wasn't interested in hearing, but that didn't bother me. The video is suppose to be about her finding this record of the grandfather that she never met, not castro and his politics.
BUT I can not excuse the use of Spanish (as in Spain) music throughout the video. It was distracting, loud, rude, and disrespectful to Cubans. It not like cuban music in any way. To use such a music is to disregard very events that were happening in Cuba at the time of the interview and just paint a pretty picture of what all tourists picture Cuba as rather than what it really is. I called my mom to see it (who lived through the revolution) and she was instantly annoyed and angry at the music. I expect more from PBS. You need to hold yourself to higher standard than this.

Interesting interview, although I wish the video was longer. Fidel is an absolute legend, an inspiration for all future generations of how we need to do more, be better.
I think Castro was sincere. The causes that followed produced the effect. Nobody's perfect, mistakes were made. Up to now, Cuba has remained a relatively safe country within the Americas, notwithstanding differences in political and social views. It doesn't import terrorists, hasn't killed Americans in war nor CONFLICT, doesn't deal in drugs, and doesn't have child labor. Cuba is a thorn in nobody's side accept to those that hold different political and social views.

i was born in cuba, came to this country legally when i was 4 visited when i was ten. the country was ok.... all i remember was my mom and dad arguing about Fidel castro. my mom being an avid supporter while my dad hated fidel. i went again to visit cuba when i was 16 and my gosh.... buildings were crumbling my grandmas kitchen collapsed in on itself. the country although rich in culture is rapidly deteriorating im 18 now and have not gone back because my mom cant face the turmoil

It is the first time I hear Fidel Castro! I think he was the greatest "dictator" of all time. He did good things for his country. Maybe I am wrong, since I don't know that much Cuba and Fidel Castro, but he seems to be a great guy!
