- Can I learn to sail from watching CZcams?
We bought an Ultimate 18 trailer sailer because it seemed like a good idea to learn how to sail. It's what I'm calling my COVID crisis.
I've watched a bunch of CZcams video's in an attempt to learn how to sail and now it's time to see if I know what I'm doing.
This is quite literally the first time we've ever sailed on our own. Join us at Corio Bay in Geelong, Victoria and see if we can actually sail our new trailer sailer.
Get out there and travel Australia, it's amazing.
Also a big thanks to my wife Racheal (AKA - WE SHOOT STUFF PHOTOGRAPHIC SERVICES). Check out her facebook page or website www.weshootstuff.com.au
Enjoy!
Thanks for watching. Don't forget to like & subscribe.

I've sailed many seas but never had a lesson. The boat kinda teaches you. Best wishes all!
Thanks, nothing beats hands on learning.
6/6/2023 Bought a 19' trailer sailor at an auction 6 months ago. Put it in the water soon after to make sure it floats and no leaks. No prior sailing experience but wanted to learn. Refurbished with cleaning, polishing, new lines etc. Didn't need a lot. Took a 3 hour sailing lesson for basics and watch a lot of youtubes. Well she's going in the water this week for her maiden trip. She has a new outboard to no matter where I go I'm confident I can get back... Thanks for you vid it give people confidence to go for it. Great family fun.
Thanks and good luck with the maiden voyage. It makes me happy to know that people are inspired by our video's. Just start out in light, calm conditions and enjoy the learning experience. Have fun and be sure to leave a comment to let us know how you go.
I would be inclined to take professional instruction on something like sailing that affects the safety of the vessel and the crew.
I watched the videos of a couple who bought a catamaran and took professional sailing tuition and was highly impressed with the level of training they received.
Most people pay for driving tuition, but being out on the water trying not to capsize as you learn has a very different set of risks, which professional tuition helps to recognise and manage.
Thanks for your thoughts. I can definitely see benefits in professional training.
Great video! Great hobby! Maintenance, weather, rigging, slicing, everything a Sport. There is so To learn it take a life and time. God bless you. Hard alee!
Thanks. We're loving the learning process and the feel of been propelled by the wind.
Ha, had a COVID crisis myself and bought a trailer sailer last September. After a few months of procrastinating it will be in the water this weekend. Thanks for the vid and inspiration
So I'm not the only one to get crazy ideas in lockdown. Glad you enjoyed the video. What boat did you buy?
@@VentureOffroadAustralia4x4 I picked up a great Castle 650 in excellent condition from a guy in portarlington.. been sailing it on and off.. its a cracking boat. (excuse the name change, thats from my old channel)
@@DanielSmith-vp5vn the castle seem like a popular boat. If you're sailing the Geelong area. Keep an eye out for us and be sure to say hi.
Great to see you on Saturday at Bendigo yacht club Barry. Challenging race but hope you enjoyed it. Dan
@@DanielSmith-vp5vn was good to meet you too. I had great fun although it felt pretty relaxed for a race with the light winds. Hope to catch you again somewhere.
thankyou guys. inspiring. this is what i have been planning for 4 years
I'm glad we could be an inspiration. I hope you have the opportunity to bring your plans to life.
G'day folks looks like I'm your 1000th subscriber ! - I'm interested in getting into sailing.
Thanks, hope go can get on the water. Sailing is great fun.

Sailing is great.
Hi Baz,
Hadn't seen this video. The boat looks great & in good condition. You will love it. Its "camping on water". On Labour day weekend we did the Marlay Point overnight race from Marlay Point to Paynesville through the night. If you have time, crewing in a few trailer sailer races will help hone your skills for cruising. Lots of places to go. Port Albert club do a cruise to Refuge Cove on Wilson's Prom; on my to do list. Enjoy
Hi Paul, I think we've picked up a a really well kept U18. I'm so happy with her overall condition and how she sails. How was the Marlay Point race? I have read about and may look at offering myself as crew once I have a bit more experience. I'll have to look into crewing, that's a good idea to learn some more skills. Refuge Cove sounds good too, a different way to see the Prom.
Thanks again for your input. Hopefully I'll bump into you sometime and have a chat in person.
Hi, got myself a little 17ft sailboat will be going in the water in a couple of weeks looking forward to sailing but a little apprehensive your video was encouraging atb
That's great. Have fun learning to sail, just pick your days and take a friend to learn and joy the experience with if you can. Sounds like there's lots people out there learning by doing so we're not alone. Enjoy
Great video! Can't wait to watch your journey. Perhaps we will share an anchorage someday. Best of luck, Fair winds!
Hey thanks. Glad you found our channel. I'll look forward to sharing an anchorage someday. Cheers
Well if you are in Australia, you know they have the Dinghy Cruising Association there. I would definitly touch bases with them.
Thanks, there are a few clubs and associations locally for trailer sailers. We haven't managed to have a sail with our association yet though.
good job
Thanks
Well done. I subscribed.
Thanks Rodney
Sweet boat!
Thanks, we love her.
5 kts must be thrilling ⛵️🤠
It's great fun. We even made 6 knots in our 2nd Peel Island video. That was thrilling.
What a nice surprise to find your channel. I want to learn how to sail myself. It’s a long time dream that I want to try this year.
Hey, Thanks for tuning in, I'm glad you found the channel too. Hopefully our video's will give you the inspiration to get out and have a go.
do it! Sailing will change your life
Just. Get out there basically it's common sense I bought a 23ft timber sailboat from a yank who just sailed her from Kiwi 1974 when I got here from pommy land never regretted it Marty Qld good luck!
The mast raising- what is the equipment you used to brace and lift the mast at the stern end ? A gin pole ? And specifically what type/ brand etc...? I just bought a sailboat and cannot raise the mast, its too heavy and unwieldy. This is an ODay 17. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
The brace at the stern is just a length of timber with a roller on top that was made by a previous owner. It serves two purposes, first it allows us to move the mast into position easily and second, it makes raising easier because it's not horizontal. We have a line attached to the forestay and run through blocks back to the cockpit that helps take the mast weight as a person stands it up.
From what I've seen gin poles do seem popular but our system was in place when we bought the boat and works well.
Maybe there's an association of forum for the ODay that has some information on mast raising or ask the previous owner too.
Happy sailing.
Nice vid mate
Thanks
Well done but I would like everyone to be wearing a life vest," you never know" 🤔
Thanks Paul. We got a bit caught up in the excitement at first, just getting the boat on the water for the first time. Once we had the sails up we realised and the life vests went on. About 5:40 in the video.
Does anyone remember how to furl a sail without a roller furler?
Not me, is it something I should know?
@@VentureOffroadAustralia4x4 Yes! It's not that hard and gives you a warm, fuzzy glow of sailer-like satisfaction - that's my experience (on my 20ft trailer sailer).
@@RobertSmith-jl4yw do you have a link to a how to video or write up?
wow scarry thinkin of doin the same thing teachn self how to sail lol
We've had a lot of fun so far. We have a heap to learn. Having a mentor would be very helpful but if you enquire at a local club I think you'll find someone willing to teach you the basics. Good luck with it.
Find a local marina with sail boats , be very polite and ask if you can ride along, there’s lots of people that love to teach and have an extra hand onboard
CZcams will not teach you how to sail. Only experience will teach you.
CZcams will make you familiarize you with what to do.
Yes, same with most thing I think. Read and watch tutorials to learn the techniques and terminology but to truly learn we must practice and that's the fun part.
