  • Can I learn to sail from watching CZcams?
We bought an Ultimate 18 trailer sailer in what I'm calling my COVID crisis.
I've watched a bunch of CZcams video's in an attempt to learn how to sail and now it's time we're having a crack in some calm conditions suitable for beginners like us.
Some of the channels I've been watching and learning from are, Sailing SV Delos, Sailing Uma, Sailing La Vagabonde and Josh Post.
One video I've found particularly helpful is "Learn How to Sail: A Step-by-Step Guide to Sailing" by Josh Post, • Learn How to Sail: A S...
This is quite literally the second time we've ever sailed on our own. Join us at Corio Bay in Geelong, Victoria and see if we can actually sail our new trailer sailer.
Get out there and travel Australia, it's amazing.
Also a big thanks to my wife Racheal (AKA - WE SHOOT STUFF PHOTOGRAPHIC SERVICES). Check out her facebook page or website www.weshootstuff.com.au
    Enjoy!
Thanks for watching. Don't forget to like & subscribe.

Your beard makes a great wind sock lol. I'm able to see the wind direction by watching it.

Hi Bazz, welcome to trailer sailing. The Ultimate18 is a great boat, easy to handle, stable & forgiving. Talk to Ray with his U18 Restless. He is a very good sailor & can help u with setting up the boat so it can sail at optimum. We r members of Geelong Trailable Yacht Club (GTYC) & r keen to help u get the best out of your boat whether cruising, occasional racing or camping on water. The Ultimate association is also a must to meet like minded people who enjoy cruising. This year we sailed in Lake Alexandrina Milang Goolwa classic & Marlay Point Overnight race in the Gippsland Lakes. Lots of fun, lots to learn & lots of great people. Just a tip, tilt the motor up out of the water to reduce drag when sailing. Do u have a wind indicator on top of the mast? I think it is a must. Look forward to your future videos. Do a sail through the north channel back though the Hopetoun channel in Corio Bay. Have fun & be safe.
    Regards Paul

Hi Paul, thanks for watching and commenting. So far we're really pleased with the U18. I think we actually met Ray the day I filmed this video. We were keen to get on the water so didn't chat as long as I would have liked. He certainly seemed very knowledgeable. I plan on joining both the GTYC and Ultimate association in the very near future, so look forward to meeting you. I'm under no illusions, I have much to learn and honestly I think joining a club will be a great way to learn. Thanks for the tips too. I've been looking at wind indicators and plan on having one for our next sail.
      Thanks again

Good effort. If you haven't already. Suggest you join the Ultimate yacht association and Geelong trailable yacht club. You will learn far more from those groups than youtube

Thanks Linda. We have joined the ultimate association. I'm really looking forward to meeting and learning from some of the members. Learning from CZcams is really just a silly experiment but I feel like it's given me the basics to get started at least.

Hi, I try to upload every second Saturday. There should be a new video up in a few days about travelling in Western Australia. We should have another sailing video up in two weeks too.
We have a good collection of past video's to watch too if you're keen. Everywhere from the Victorian high country to Fraser Island, Cape York, Central Australia, Northern Territory and lots to Western Australia.
      Thanks for watching, enjoy.

Just got a 24 footer with the intent of relearning to sail from CZcams. Good to see others doing the same. I am also using a simulator game on PC called eSail. It has been helpful but does not beat hands on.

I had a look for sailing simulations but didn't find that one. Will have to check it out. Loving sailing so far and feel like I'm getting a handle on the basics. Lots to learn but plenty of time for that. Enjoy getting the 24 footer on the water.

@@VentureOffroadAustralia4x4 eSail is available on Steam. There's another that looks better but not as realistic physics called Sailaway.

Hi Bazz, thanks for the video, can you please confirm the name of the App you use for chart plotting. Two things I noticed from your sail that you might want to consider: lift your fenders when sailing as you may find the fender ropes get very messy from the spinning action and the the most important thing to remember is to keep your “pop top” down when sailing, just in case you encounter a freak wave . Cheers Pete - Ultimate owner also .

      @VentureOffroadAustralia4x4  Před 3 lety

Hi Peter, thanks for the tips. The app is C-Map. I've only used the app a couple of times been new to sailing but so far it seems to work well.
Are you a member of any clubs?
I plan on joining the ultimate club in Melbourne and possibly the Geelong trailerable yacht club.

@@VentureOffroadAustralia4x4 yes my wife and I are members of the Ultimate club and have been for several years. It’s a great club that has lots of organised events with the culmination each year being the Easter sail at Gippsland Lakes. If you need details let me know or check out the Ultimate site on line.

@@VentureOffroadAustralia4x4 very much look forward to it . I must admit I’ve seen your travels around Oz and am an avid fan of that, so a bit of chat about your travels would be good, in amongst a lot of sailing banter and perhaps a quiet drink.
