Sports games have never really been my bag, but for someone like me, who has barely any interest in football, FIFA International Soccer was one of the few games in the genre I'd consider playing.
While there had been plenty of attempts at creating a computerised version of the beautiful game, FIFA represents something of a watershed moment. Still a far cry from the annualised cash-grabbing juggernaut it would eventually become, the original is an incredibly accessible, not to mention highly polished interpretation of the sport, managing to appeal to aficionados and novices alike. There's a decent number of options on offer that can tailor the gameplay to offer both arcade or simulation-oriented experiences, variable pitch and weather settings, team formations and more. The player control scheme is excellent, allowing you to assume control of the closest player to the ball easily enough, while lobbing, passing and shooting are controlled by the A, B and C buttons on the joypad, with the strength of the shot increasing the longer the button is held.
Football fans more versed in the sport may have a different opinion, but for a complete novice like myself, FIFA serves as an excellent entry-point. It looks and sounds great, and the overall experience is a highly positive one. The series would blow up in a way no-one could imagine, not always for the better, but credit where it's due - FIFA International Soccer is an excellent virtual game of footie.

That was my favorite game, back in 1993. I was 16, and it seems like yesterday, today I'm 47. I miss those times.

nice to see i'm not the only one thinking about lost time .. especially saturday mornings, trying to be extra quiet turning on the family PC with its whirs & beeps. waiting 5mins before everything even loads up, good times 🍻

Awesome game. Spents months playing this when it first came out. Don't remember the crowd sounding so good though. Still looks a good game

Classic. The frames of animation were a point they advertised in mags. Made me want to really like soccer. Loved turning off fouls and turning it into a brutal shoving / tackling match.

I remember my friend Fred Alexander haven’t seen him in 25+ years. We use to play co-op and we knew nothing about the sport. But we had such a great time destroying the CPU. Good times.

    early 90s pre-avarice time
Before it became a cash-grabbing juggernaut it was a Genesis superstar.

Oh, thank you! 😊👍 it pleasure to remember this game. Just yesterday I played in “FIFA international Soccer” on SNES. Very very good game, it be my first Soccer video game in life, and in end of year 1994 appeared my second hockey video game NHL95 (first hockey game be amazing “Blades of Steel” at Dendy - Taiwan analog of NES. it still great to play in this games).
I admit what gameplay and speed in same sports games on Sega MD2 more faster when on SNES. Maybe graphic on SNES a little bit better, but speed and action on Sega much better. How I already said, I played in SNES soccer yesterday, it fresh in my memory and I saw difference between speed here and on my PAL SNES console.

every game i would promise myself not to stand in front of their keeper when he had the ball...then when i'd go 1-0 down i'd just do it once to get it back to 1-1. not sure how old i was but i had this, actua soccer 3 and Euro 96 so must have been 8ish (1999)
