After a while a lot of people have problems with the top opening all the way on their Nissan 350Z convertible. It opens but the top won't go all the way into it's storage area. The problem is two bands in the top that are intended to pull one of the roof bars out of the way when you open the top. After a while these bands wear out don't pull the bar properly. In this video I show you how to install Spyder Bands which will replace the worn out bands with new ones. It takes about 10 minutes!
You can see the OEM replacement here: geni.us/350ZTopStraps 97150-CE01B which are $77+ PER SIDE

Your straps are brilliant and worked like a charm! I had already called 2 different shops (one that specializes in convertible repair) and neither of them recognized the issue and wanted to charge me for further exploration into the cause. I started my research and found your video describing the exact issue I was experiencing. I placed my order immediately. The straps arrived within a week and were a breeze to install. In no time my 2006 350Z was back in business!
Thank you so much for a reasonably priced solution that put my pride and joy back in top working condition again. :)
My top hasn’t worked for soooooo long! Such a simple fix!
My father has had 2 replacement tops on his 07 350z. The action of the top going down and up was very rough. My father ordered these bands a year ago and we installed them today. Thank you for this product! The action of the top is super smooth and there is no metal on fabric friction causing wear on the top. Thanks again dude! You rock! Get this product if available, whether you need it yet or not. Consider it preventative maintenance. :)
I can't believe it!!! I am a 70n yar old woman. Took my 350 Z to an auto place and they couldn't fix it. The dealership said unlikely they could repair and I would have to order a new roof - $15,000 later and 1 year wait. I used your straps -- oiled some parts and voila ...it works. A few suggestions but I made it work.
I just realized this is 2 years old! But wow, really helped me 🙌🏼 hope you are still making videos, you are great at this !!
Thanks for the video and product. Ordered on Sunday and installed on Tuesday. Works flawlessly now
Great video! I just got my Spyder straps from Amazon (felt like an empty package) and am ready to do this, if it ever stops raining... Okay, it stopped raining. The new straps worked perfectly. I got a huge discount buying this car because the top didn't go down. Now it does, all for $41.61. Thanks for showing me how to fix this.
Bought and received the Spyderbands. The process took 20 minutes to remove old bands and install hew Spyderbands. Works perfectly. Thanks!
Oh my god they freaking work! Such a simple inexpensive fix! Brilliant! So easy to install your grandma could do it!!
Was losing my mind trying to figure out why it wouldn’t go down. Thanks for the help!
Just got them installed, they work perfectly. Only took 8-10min. Thank you 👍
Saving vert lives, brother! Thank you
I like to THANK YOU for your help! I had this problem for 8 months and found your video, purchased the STRAPS, installed them and my issue is RESOVED. It works1 I hope it stays that way. THANK YOU for your time!
Thrilled to help. We never dreamed how big the need was. Lets keep these cars going as long as we can! The 350Z is still going to be cool many years from now.
my GF's old Z's top is sticking at the same spot. I was in there all last night oiling hinges and looking for binding. Didn't think to check straps.
thanks; If they seem to be the issue, I'll come back and follow-up.
edit: that was exactly the issue. I tugged on mine and they just kind of fell apart. Just ordered some of yours off of amazon. Cheers, m8. 👌
edit2: 7 months later and it's still working great.
Thank you so much man, this saved me!!! You’re amazing ! I subscribed and liked🙏🏼
Pure genius! Works perfectly now, best money I have spent in a while, thank you...
Work great, better than factory straps. Thanks a lot
You just saved me a ton of money thanks!! Just ordered mine!
You Sir are an absolute legend - thank you!
Well, I hate to say this, I was hesitant to believe this, but my wife insisted that I order this product. I did and she helped me install them, and I was shocked when my convertible top worked beautifully... thank you so very much...
Order your elastic went well took 1/2 hour worked great thanks
I had this problem as well and used elastic straps with velcro on the ends. Worked like a charm.
Still working good?
Thank you so much. I looked at this for weeks eventually saying I need to bring it somewhere to investigate. 5 minutes on CZcams and a test on the bar and eureka 😅.
Dude This is so awesome!!! Thanks man!!
You are very welcome. Right now you can get the bands at www.spyderbands.com They will be on Amazon in a few weeks.
Simply an awesome hack bro..!!!
Kudos!
The straps fixed the problem with my top perfectly. It's operating like new. I did run into one issue, however. When the original straps were installed by the manufacturer, the rivets weren't snapped cleanly leaving the holes in the rivets closed up. I had to drill the rivets with a 3/32" drill bit in order to fit the brass pins.
I ran into the same issue, I tried lightly tapping the holes to see if they would clear up a bit, a couple did , but others didn’t.
Im going to give your idea a shot .
Thanks so much, a repair shop wanted $350 we haven’t used our top for several years but now we will fix it! 2006 64,000 I know it’s sad!
Awesome!!! I fixed it mayself. Not bad for a retired 65+ lady
You are the best bro
You are a genius! Thank you!
I bought two of these straps and gave them to the mechanic who was replacing my top, and he lost them. I looked up and saw some like elastic shoelaces they put where the new straps should be. I even gave then an SD memory card with this video saved for reference! WTF! I should have done it myself!!! Thanks for the video as it saves a lot of money over the OEM straps!
Oh no, that is terrible. Did you end up getting them installed in the end or do you still have the shoe laces? Did you get them from the website or amazon? Email me a spyderbands@gmail.com with your order number and I'll get you another set shipped out.
@@spyderbandsandmore7458 Thank you so very much for your consideration. I did place another order, so no need to re-send a replacement, but again, I really appreciate your customer care! Best regards! I will follow up after the new pair are installed.
Dude installing them hard
Love you broo its very useful
Thank you so much bro
Great description
Nice bro thanks alot
Thanks Dude! You Rock!😎👍
Thank you very much the dealership wanted to charge me a lot of money to fix my top
I’ve heard of a lot of people replacing the full top when they didn’t need to. Does yours have the same problem?
Yes indeed I just fixed it with fabric Velcro my top is going down perfect now
Excellent bro.
Very helpful! ✊🏾
Worked! 🎉
Ordered mine on Amazon. Going to try it tomorrow when they arrive and will report back. Fingers crossed!
Update?
@@plaz5702 worked like a charm;
Ben Dowswell nice, I’m having the same problem but I tried with zip ties and it didn’t work, hopefully this straps work
Very helpful..where did you get the straps? Also can anything else go wrong with the top like the motor or something?
Just installed it today on my Z. I ordered it 3 years ago :) procrastination king..LOL
The top of my roadster has been acting funny for a while. I took it to a a guy down in Orange county and we got it to go but said the elastic bands might need replacing soon. He charges $350 for those so might pick yours up and give it shot first before dropping that kind of cash. Might give that cruise control switch thing a try too. Good work, sir!
Was the bar getting stuck while going down like in the video? Mine did that a little then started doing it every time. IF that is what is happening these will probably fix it. $350 is actually not bad for an OEM replacement. But you can buy 10 sets of ours for that price and you won’t accidentally cut a hole in your roof like you can drilling out the rivets. We’ve shipped 72 sets in the last three months and so far haven’t had any negative feedback. I have to imagine at least a few people have bought them and found the straps were not the issue. But we’ve gotten some great reviews that they totally fixed the issue.
I figure it’d be worth a shot. And yes was going down most of the way and with some finagling could get the top to open completely (until last night)
Hello super video well explained even if I don't speak the language being French in the 44 Loire Atlantique of Joué sur Erdre, your video helped me a lot I had the same problem, however but elastic did not seem so relaxed to me, while waiting for my commende I tinkered but elastic a bit like you and nickel it works perfectly, at Nissan there are baltringue it's immediately crazy quotes and moreover he does not even know his car model he better sell sweets, thank you again, I wish you a very good day Regards Guy
Thank you for sharing this. I sooo love this video. 😀🙏🏽. I have a 2004 350z that I just purchased from my cousin. I need the whole roof replaced, the headlights replaced, and the console replace with possibly a GPS system, rehowever I was going to purchase the roof and have a professional install it. Is that the smartest thing to do? Also I notice your BOMB SEATS. Where can I purchase seats like that? Yes I’m a girl and I LOVE FAST CARS & MOTORCYCLES. I have a motorcycle as well. I’ve been riding for 20 years now. Can you direct me to a couple of websites for the car parts?
Ugh, I just paid a shop $90+ labor to do this exact process I could have done myself.. Where were you 2 weeks ago?!?!?! I love your channel though and the idea of popping a brass 'staple' into the existing rivets is genius.
Was right here! In theirs don’t work just let me know. At first I figured we could find some staples that would fit but we make these by hand so they fit just perfect. But as long as your vert works $90 isn’t bad compared to what most people have been quoted.
Cool!, Thanks
Hey man, do you happen to kow what that bar is called that the strps are attarched to, mine is bent and im able to replace jt but i dont knwkw here to but another bar like that
Got the same problem on my 2006 vert z. I just push them to wiggle the top down. Yet I'm tempted to just buy a cheap pair of bungy cords and tie them bar to bar.
Brilliant! Just had this happen this week.
Any suggestions on how to refresh the material on the inside of the door armrests? On both sides it looks like the grey has worn off irregularly. I used good leather cleaner but no improvement.
Thanks.
For the armrests they are pretty easy to take off and I wet sanded mine. Then I painted it with this paint. amzn.to/3okHrf4
I have a cross cabriolet and the top is stuck. Do you know how to get into the trunk to get to the motors that run the top.
Thanks for the video. I just ordered some from your website!
Just printed a label, they are packed and shipping today!
Hello! Thank you so much for your idea, although once I started working with mine and took original Velcro covers. I noticed that there was lots of rust and stuff just building up.
Is there a recommendation to use because as of now, my brass brackets will not fit in the holes. Thank you for your time and tips!
Drill the holes out with a bit
Did those gold and black seats come stock?
Great vid!! I notice that the brass seems to wanna poke out of the strap, just wondering how they been working out for you and if the up and down haven't punctured the strap.
The brass does go through the strap by design. That is how it fits so precisely in the existing rivets. Then the way the strap wraps around provides extra security to ensure the pin doesn’t come out and hides the pin so someone looking at really has no idea it isn’t OEM unless they are familiar with the design.
We first started producing these about 20 months ago and after many hundreds have been sold I haven’t heard back one issue of them failing. I’m sure they haven’t fixed every car for everyone that bought them. But if the problem is the existing straps these will fix it 100%.
@@spyderbandsandmore7458 I replaced bands. It went down. Now it gets stuck at the very end again! What else could it be?
Ive replaced the straps but it still stops on way down 4 or 5 times it goes back up smoothly however any ideas?? 2006 350Z
how can i get those exact car seats???
2 questions please: (1) will the straps work on a 2009 model too? (2) where did you get those badass seats from? Thank you for your video, that was really well done!
Yes. They only made the convertible 350z in 2009 and these will work fine. Just not in a 370z.
They were a stock option in the touring. But I think they were only in the DE models.
No I have a 2006 roadster .
how do your seats still look that good? mine are the exact same seats and I have some tearing on the side and the bottom has some hairline dry cracks all over
They do have some hairline cracks, but no big tears. I sold this car and now have the blue one in the new video. But there are some pretty good kids online I considered to fix them.
Will this work for the top on a 370Z?
Have you guys stopped selling on Amazon? The link provided takes me to the product page, but it says that the product is not available. Says that they are not sure "When or If" it will be available.
No. They are still for sale. They have just been sitting on the dock at the Amazon warehouse for three weeks waiting to be unpacked. It’s crazy. If you get them from Spyderbands.com they will be out the door Monday.
I'm about to get my 350z in a couple weeks. The top wont go down so I'll try this method
did u figure it out getting mine tmre
UPDATE: works beautifully opening up. Just one issue I'm having and hope you can help. In the video at @4:22 the top bar on the left when closing is staying with the top bar on the right and not extending outward. So I have to manually pull it away while its closing so it closes properly. Any ideas what may be causing this??
I know this is 2 years late lol, but I'm having the same issue, I think it's because my bar is bent a little so it's restricting it from returning back to its normal state
Hey bro i just picked up one of this 350z roadster days ago. same rubber band issue causing it not to go down fully. but if i changed the band, it pulls it down when dropping the top, but i need that bar to be up as well when the top goes up, wouldnt the band that is pulling it down not allow it to go up?
It's elastic so it will stretch so the bar can go back into place as needed. As it closes the top actually pushes the bar back into the right place. Out of over 1500 sold at this point I have only heard of one case where the bar didn't go back and I never did hear back to know if they found the cause.
@@spyderbandsandmore7458 what happened to me was. So my unit, i had to manually push the bar down while opening the top, and i had to manually bring the bar up while closing the top. When i didn't bring the bar up, it torn my canvas 😭 so it looks like i need to figure out why it's not automatically pushing the bar up when closing the top :(
Hello, I come from France and I never find the solution for my roof, so I wanted to thank you for posting this video and I will try your solution
thank you so much
They are on the way, shipped yesterday!
I received and I immediately installed and everything works perfectly, a lot of thanks from France, thank you thank you thank you
So happy this worked for you!
If you are on Facebook it would be great if you could leave a review there. facebook.com/SpyderBands/reviews
replace the motor for the top you can do it yourself but it's a pain because dealer replacement is expensive
I just got my roof changed a week ago and it didnt have that problem but now it has and i dont know what to do coz its got new straps already
Nyasha Hove someone else just said the same thing on Reddit. Are your straps tight when the roof is up? They should snap. If so I would ask whoever you got the top from. That doesn’t seem to be an uncommon issue.
Would you prefer that I order directly, or is Amazon all the same to you?
It's really up to you. Amazon will get them to you faster because they are in most warehouses. So same day in some places. But our overhead is higher on Amazon. You will receive the exact same product and warrantee either way.
Hello! I was wondering, is there a way to install these bands "wrong"?
I ask because I installed mine but the problem persist.
Does the top have the be in any specific position , and how tight should they be?
Thank you!
If there are wrapped around properly there are a a couple of reasons the top may not be working. Usually it means something is bent and won't allow it to fold. If you want to take some pictures of your installed straps and email them to spyderbands@gmail.com we can take a look. From there there are a couple of things you can try.
I will send a video and some pictures! @@spyderbandsandmore7458

I just replaced my 350z convertible top due to having rips all over. My top was working fine but now that I’m all done installing the soft top I am unable to open it🤬
I’ve not done a full top replacement but have heard that you need to leave it closed out in the sun for a few days after putting the new top on to help it settle on. Where is it getting stuck? Is like at the very end line in the video? Did it come with new elastic bands?

I was charged $125 and was told, " We don't know what the problem is. Could be forward rails, $2200, we won't know until we take the whole top off".
I Saw and ordered Spyderbands online. Installed them myself in 20 minutes. Top works perfectly. I repeat, TOP WORKS PERFECTLY! Thank you for your simple solution to a problem Nissan dealers will try to rob you for.

Okay I'm still confused as to what the new straps do that the oem old ones should be doing. Are the old ones too loose? Too stiff that it wont open? I'm having issues with my 07 convertible I just bought it like 3 weeks ago and was wondering if this is the solution and how do I know for a fact it is the straps that are the issue. Thanks
Great question. The straps should be springy and you should be able to snap them. If they feel hard and crunchy they could be causing your issue. I say could because there are a lot of things that can go wrong, these just seem to be the most common. The one problem they fix is not being able to put your top down all the way. It makes it 90% of the way and gets stuck. If you reverse it a little bit and can push the bar down by hand and then close it then it is the straps. That is what they are supposed to do. The pull that bar down while you are opening the top. If they are worn and not elastic enough they can’t do that and the bar gets in the way. If you are having a different issue they won’t help. I’ve done a ridiculous amount of research into these tops and if you’re having another issue let me know and I may be able to point you in the right direction.
@@spyderbandsandmore7458 I will check today to see the straps. Someone on some other video said for a quick fix use zip ties lol. Anyways, I think I'll order the straps from your link and let you know if it was the issue. You're awesome for putting this up and helping others btw. Thank you very much
When I first started researching this issue I saw some of the “fixes” people used. I’m not sure how zip ties would even work since they aren’t elastic. Bungie cords work if you find just the right length but don’t like the way they work and was really worried the the hooks would damage the top. Someone used an arm band for holding cell phones which I thought was clever but the only one I found that would actually work cost more than we charge for the bands. The OEM replacements are really expensive and you have to drill out the rivets, i was worried one slip and the drill bit would go through the top. At first I thought this design would be super simple, buy some staples that fit and some elastic and done. But it turned out to be a lot harder than that. The brass we could works best is a really weird size and the measurements have about .25mm of tolerance. We ended up making a tool just to make them. Anyway, long story short, we’re really proud of how they have turned out (WAY better now than in the video) and wish I had a running total of how much money they have saved people. It has to be over $100,000 at this point.
Cut some old boxers and a coat hanger and filed to fit without having to drill out old rivets 0$ LOL
You must not have watched the video. No drilling required.
I guess you could do that if you have lots of free time to get the sizes just right. Which you probably do if you have old boxers hanging from your top. 😁
Is this a problem on the 370Z too?
It is a problem on the 370Z, unfortunately it’s a much more complicated system on the 370Z and we don’t have a fix that works for the 370.
