Dave Navarro has always been the guitar player for Janes Addiction to this day. He did play on 1 album for the Chili Peppers ("One Hot Minute" 1995) but was never considering the main guitarist.

He was fired for relapsing on heroin and cocaine, and john was clean at the time so they hired him back, also hoping another sober member would help keep anthony clean as he was struggling with addiction at the time

Great reaction. 90s rock is usually associated with the grunge rock mainly coming out of Seattle, with Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam. Those bands and that style got most of the attention and fame. I admit I was more drawn to that style at the time. But Southern Cali also had some great rock bands at that time as well. Janes Addiction, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, RHCP, and No Doubt among others. They all had a unique sound that was very different from what was coming out of Seattle. I think they got overshadowed at the time and it took some time for people to appreciate what these bands were doing.

So glad you guys have finally come back to Jane's Addiction. I'm sure I've mentioned it in previous comments that I've left you that they have been one of my favourite bands since I first heard them just after I turned 17 in early 1990. I've been to a lot of live shows since my first when I was 15 in 1988 and I've seen a lot of bands, but Jane's Addiction are still one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Especially back in their late 80's to early 90's period before the original split. They put so much energy and intensity into their live shows back then and really knew how to get the crowd going. There's so many great songs you could check out by them. I'm sure you've done Mountain Song and I think Ocean Size already. But do check out the likes of "Ain't No Right", "Stop", "Ted Just Admit It", "Three Days", "Then She Did" and "Pigs In Zen" to name just a few. You can't go wrong with any of the tracks from "Nothing's Shocking" or "Ritual De Lo Habitual". Such a great band.

He directed an Adult Film named "Broken" with Sasha Grey🤩. He advocates for mental health support. I suggest reading "Don't Try This at Home" & watching "Mourning Son" if you want details. His mom was murdered, he went on America's Most Wanted and her ex was caught. He has overcome and accomplished so much.

Just to add to my earlier comment and clear up a few of your questions. The original Jane's line up was Perry Farrell on vocals Dave Navarro on guitar, Eric Avery on bass and Stephen Perkins on drums. They released their debut album which was a live album in 1987 followed by 2 studio albums, Nothing's Shocking (1988) and Ritual De Lo Habitual (1990). Jane's then split up in 1991. Perry and Stephen Perkins went off to form the band Porno For Pyros. Dave Navarro joined the Chili Peppers after their guitarist John Frusciante left. Navarro only played on one Chili Peppers album which was "One Hot Minute" from the mid 90's. Jane's then reformed to play some reunion live shows around late 96 early 97 with all of them aside from bassist Eric Avery, so Flea filled in on bass while he was at a loose end with the Chili Peppers taking a bit of a break at the time. Jane's then disappeared for a few year before reforming again in the early 2000's, still without original bassist Avery and were joined by a new bassist Chris Chaney (who used to play in Alanis Morissette's band). They recorded two new albums together "Strays" in 2003 and "The Great Escape Artist" in 2011.

According to lead singer Perry Farrell, there was an actual Jane - with an actual heroin habit and an abusive boyfriend named Sergio - who lived with him and nearly a dozen others in a group house in Hollywood as the band was forming in the early '80s. She talked endlessly about scrimping for a jaunt to Europe: "Jane says, 'I'm going away to Spain, when I get my money saved," and she took an occasional swipe at a housemate, but she never seemed to connect: "She gets mad and starts to cry, takes a swing but she can't hit."
The real Jane is Jane Bainter, who was living in Los Angeles. It took her a while, but she eventually got over her drug problems.
Farrell (Blender magazine, December 2006): "Around 1984, I rented a big house on Wilton, near Hancock Park, right in the heart of everything good in Hollywood, but the whole neighborhood seemed deteriorated. I deceived the landlord into thinking I was a gay interior decorator rather than a Punk rocker, and one of my housemates was Jane, this strangely beautiful, well-to-do girl who got caught up in the drug scene and fell in love with a dealer named Sergio. Jane was an intellectual and knew how to act aristocratic, even with a needle and a spoon on the table. I'm not sure if the song mythologized the neighborhood - St. Andrew's Place is nothing special to look at - but I do think it glamorized her life in a way. That was a great time, though. When the landlord found out I wasn't a gay interior decorator, he came after me with a gun."

Growing up in LA in the late-80s and early 90's was a highlight of my life. Being able to see Jane's Addiction, Primus, Tool, Rage Against The Machine, RHCP, No Doubt, Fishbone and others was just special. Like Smokey mentioned in the "Mountain Song" video I requested a while back, there was just a totally unique and different vibe coming out of LA while Seattle was all about the "dirty" and messy sound. I think Jane's Addiction has never really been given the credit they deserve for their impact on Rock.

Oh, crowd surfing, is there a way to do that anymore since every concert seems to have seating? Yes at festivals but is their the same kind of music that inspires doing it? Mid 80's thru mid 90's were the best time to go to rock/alternative concerts.

This album is fantastic, a classic- from the cover of the LP to the music- and you should watch the videos about Lalapalooza, which Perry Farrell started.
He did everything with little $ for the band after moving to CA and not following in his Jewish family wishes for him to be an accountant.
Jane was his housemate and he used her heroin addiction to name the band and for the lyrics for this song, which Jane says all really happened.
She is alive and clean now.
Listen to all of Nothing's Shocking as the songs are not all the same but have the best of the weirdest there was and it was so different at the time and still holds its own. His voice is amazing.
This is my high school memories and i get chills from this still.
Still have my LP and a t shirt from 1988.

Believe it or not,Jane’s Addiction played here in Norfolk around 1988 at a place called Bessie’s Place The Boathouse. Snow on the ground and only about 200 people in the audience . Paid maybe 10 bucks for the show, but it was epic . Saw them again on the Ritual De la Habitual tour in 1990 with 24-7 Spies. Talk about a crazy show. Boathouse was at full capacity of around 3,000 and the place was hopping. Still only paid about 15 bucks for the show. Miss those old days when people could actually afford concerts.

They’ve got two very distinct sides, a super chill kinda trippy songs like this, Ted Just Admit It, and everything on the second half of Ritual De all Habitual. Then there’s the harder rock side with Mountain Song, Stop, and the first half of Ritual. They had four members, Stephen Perkins, one of the best drummers ever, Eric Avery, Dave, and Perry.

Thanks for the Jane's Addiction. I don't know if there is a consistent one sound they have other than excellent. Like everyone is saying Three Days is awesome, Stop is excellent and more high paced, my favorite is Summertime Rolls.
PS I think the Pulp Fiction song you were thinking of was by surf guitar legend Dick Dale. The name of the song might be Nitro if I'm thinking right, but if it's super fast guitar it's definitely Dick Dale.
