Iâm excited to have your professionalism, positive attitude and creativity on this Mini Cooper gig. Weâre going to have a lot of fun and capture some really cool visuals. Iâm looking forward to road tripping later this week.
@@AnthonyQuintano itâs coming up so quick! Going to be a fun adventure
Lets gooooo! This Mini Cooper shoots sounds awesome, and I think youâre gonna kill it! And bringing in Adam feels like a great choice, you know heâll carry on the vision you give him đđ»
I like this âsit and chatâ style video. Itâs cool to see whatâs on your plate and what youâre thinking through!
Personally I just bought 2 of the Chroma VND filters from Polar Pro (which let you control the polarizer and ND, and they make them in snap on or thread on) and Iâm really liking them. They arenât perfect, and are clunky to use if youâre operating a gimbal, but the image is the cleanest I have ever seen on an ND filter. I have a video coming out Monday that shows me using them on a shoot. So thatâs definitely 1 solid option for you.
Keep killing it bro! Itâs encouraging seeing your progress and growth!
@@Tommy_Beal I need to watch your video! Or send me the unlisted link so I can watch it now đ

Nice casual chat. Love it. Keep up the grind brother!
@@FilmedByHendrix thanks for peeping it man.
Oh man congrats ! That sounds like a super fun job ! Keep posting vlogs!
@@stuartswindellcampoy8483 it will be tough but I will!
@@davidmorefield yeah no of course, prioritize the job haha
I donât remember when I first subscribed but this is the video I needed to hear. Want to connect and really start to learn more. I just signed up for Production Hub. Yes, bring the meet up to New York brother
@@Brothererick1 New York sounds fun. Iâll make it happen.
Best filters/ NDs Iâve used with the cleanest colors is the nisi true color line
love the let-just-chat, format here! For a VND with CPL, I've been very happy with these K&F Concept Variable Fader ND2-ND32 ND Filter and CPL. Hopfully whatever you get, you can get your hands on a test first.
Congrats on the new gig. Word of mouth is everything! I actually really dig the magnetic filters from freewell. The m2 magnetic system is pretty strong. The CPL does have a bit of a yellow shift though. Also Iâve experienced vignetting at 16mm with the filters. I understand if you donât like a magnetic system though. Good luck with the newsletter. Iâd love to sign up!
NYC letâs go đ. I think we can have a big one đđ»
Iâll be looking out for the 16mm vignette
I use B+W 6 stop ND and CPL on small setups and Schneider 4x5.65 ND and linear pol on the main cam. I'm an automotive videographer that's tried everything. Shoot 5500K and you'll have good results. I use a7s3, fx30, a6700 primarily.
@@eletor thank you! Iâll look into this!
@@eletor do you mind sharing the exact link for the small setup?
Awesome to see you linked up with Jon! Worked with him on a few shoots, would love to help contribute in anyway in NYC.
A lot of folks swear by the polar pro Peter McKinnon ND/CPL kit, I havenât tried it myself though.
Man as a car guy that reaaally wants an R53 Mini Cooper S 6MT vert, Iâm jealous but happy you got that travel gig, thatâs right up my alley too.
@@BrandonLuckain only talked with him on ig but weâll meet in person soon.
If I see one of those cars Iâll try to snag a pic. We will be riding in a countryman
Great insight as usual David. Love it.
PS I've ordered the C400. I'm in tiny little Tasmania Australia and for me and the circles I mix in people are open to Canon but I totally get why you went with the FX6.
@@DuffTV if you are in the canon ecosystem, the c400 is an answer to your prayers! Looks amazing.
I must say, As a Canon shooter the A7SIII is probably the greatest camera sony ever made and the fact that cams today still cant beat some of those features says alot. They really made the 1080ti of mirror less cams.
Also August would be dope as long as its not during Anime NYC weekend
Great vid as usual!
I use the Tilta Mirage Mattebox + Tilta's variable ND. It's nice to use since it's a gear you can spin with a single finger to adjust it. You can get a motor setup for it, but I just use it manually. The mattebox has a spot for drop-in rectangle filters, so you can use that for the polarizer.
@@GeorgeGuillory thatâs helpful. Thanks!
Hey David, I relate to your situation with the magnetic ND. I have been using the NISI TrueColor VND Swift System 1-5 Stops - and it works wonders for me; very minimal color fringing and very rugged build. And you could stack a nano CPL that they made specifically for this Swift system as well!
@@jacksonmokk I will look into it. Thanks!
The polar pro Recon kit let's you adjust the polariser, though it's range from 3-6 stops isn't great for versatility. The HY Revo ring let's you adjust the polariser but will cross polarise over 5 stops (goes to 10) and I've heard good things about the SLR Magic VND, but it looks a little more difficult to adjust the polarisation on the fly as you need to unscrew it and reposition.
You need a VND and Circular Polarizer combo. IF your changing lenses go matte box if not then go screw on.
@@chrisw443 not sure I want to add the weight of a MB. Iâm looking for a single stop nd +cpl and still be able to attach my lens hood. Very rare lens changes.
The VND with the Tilta matte box is pretty great. dunno if you want to go that big but I love it. otherwise I will use the simple screw on filters when I'm trying to be low key with my gimbal/red set up
The Freewell threaded VND's (2-5 & 6-9) I really like, I haven't noticed any colour shift with them. Philip Bloom has a good review video on Variable ND filters. I also have a Simmods VND, also not much colour shift and you can control the polarization (tho it takes a little getting use to).
@@andychappell5942 interesting. Thanks!
NISI Swift System or the Freewell K2 system for screw on. You need to get one designed for variable ND+polarizer, they arenât compatible otherwise. Those two are good options. Iâve seen other comments saying polarpro and they arenât bad but they arenât as good as I want them to be for the price. Also afaik they donât have a VND+cpl solution.
You could get a solid ND and CPL and stack them but then if they get stuck (CPLs like to do that in my experience) youâre SOL.
Sounds like itâll be an awesome shoot! Break a leg man, hope itâs a ball
As for your questuons
The "Haida PROII CPL-VND 2-in-1 Filter" Seem to be good, I've used it on a few shoots and its superior to entry level K&F but needs more testing.
Also the rodes and dji mics (32 bit float) >> the UWP and Sennheiser ew. The shift in audio is coming.
@@UrbanAnimeLounge they are convenient but you canât get around that they are wifi based. Sometimes that is just not the right call and you need to move up to the uhf system. For simple stuff those options are great.
@@davidmorefield What are the benefits and advantages of a traditional style uhf system? I would like to break out of my negative look on them (I have from a few bad experiences).
Hey - try Nisi C5 Cinema kit. In includes VND and CPL filters. I thik that it would be the best solution for your case.
Man that job would be fun,if you need another FS6 DP let me know .Iâm in SoCal
@@Valleedbrume good to know. Thanks!
I love the mirage matte box so much itâs not even funny. Mirage w VND and you can buy additional filter trays and run a Polarizer.
Formatt Hitech Firecrest IRND. They are the best. Neutral and no color cast. Probably 0.9, 1.2 or 1.5 would work and adjust iris when needed.
Also buy the CPL from the same brand.
@@jacksonpetit1212 which mattebox do you put them in?
@@davidmorefield Ohhh I was thinking the screw on filters. The 4x5.6 would be significantly more expensive. There are a couple of brands that could work like Smallrig, Polarpro, Bright Tangerine, Tilta, Wooden Camera etc depending on budget.
Tilta Mirage VND Kit is fantastic. Small matte box setup and you can rotate the matte box introduce the circular polarising option. No vignetting/colour shift and you can add a single 4x5.6 filter on the front.
Tilta VND is horrible, unless there is new version. Crazy X pattern and color cast ... I have on, and never used it, it's so bad. Although Tilta Mirate with set of IR-NDs from Vaxis is cool, so maybe that would be a solution for David.
I got lately VAXIS circular filters with polarization adjustment but I cannot recommend them too, because of X pattern.
X pattern is strong on 3-7 stops version, it's better on 1-5, but I haven't tested it on wider lenses, cause I do not own them :D.
I guess save bet is something from Peter McKinnon branded PolarPros or NiSi True Color. But I haven't tested them, it's just based on YT reviews, so treat this with a grain of salt.
I wish theyâd come out with an updated VND for the Mirage that is more on par with what NISI or Freewell makes with polarization control.
@@tylerstooksbury3050 You can use constant IR-NDs + Vaxis Polariser.
Haven't check their polariser, but constant NDs-works fine.
@@JoATTech yes Iâm thinking something along these lines. I need to research and purchase quickly as the gig is approaching soon!
@@davidmorefield I have original McKinnon VND 6-9 stops and it's good in terms of no X-pattern and just slight color cast to warm temperature. But it does not have polarisation control.
For SLOG you need 3-7 stops (or 3-9 ideally), not sure there is one filter that can cover this range (doubt it).
If you mentioned SLOG3 Cine (not sure) then 1-5 Stops should be fine, since base ISO for CINE is much lower.
Get the filters that fit over your sensor, that way you donât have to buy one for every lens you own. Itâs relatively easy to install as well.

Not sure if you got one yet, but I would definitely consider getting one of the USB to sdi timecode adapter, tentacle and deity have their own adapters too that are compatible with the a7siii, and because itâs going into the USB port it writes the timecode to the files timecode, a big help when working with other ops on a bigger shoot you might be slotting into a team and receiving timecode from an audio team.
Ambient active timecode is goated! Get the Nano Lockits!
@@avdcam I think that will be an inevitable purchase for two camera shoots in the future. I love that itâs available. I donât have a TC system yet.
@@davidmorefield the deity TC1s are a great value, sure itâs one thing to charge but post teams will LOVE you if you send synced timecoded footage sync to day time.
And they are so much easier to manage and keep time with the app at the beginning of the day. Even if you only trade off between the A7S and fx6 itâs still extremely helpful to keep things in sync by time of day. Especially if a producer is taking notes etc. deity also makes a cable that direct attaches from usb to 3.5mm jack.
nisi true colour 1-5 vnd is the best for colour accuracy, pretty cheap too. but maybe consider your matte box option... hard to get to the VND if there's a matte box in the way
@@louie8488 the issue is I need to add cpl to the nd
Genustech makes a VND with a built in circular polarizer. I have the just the VND and super happy with it.
@@kylelowe I actually have that one. I used it for years. It was great at the time but now I want something with less color shift and softening.
@@davidmorefield for sure
When I need to work with a camera that doesnât have built in NDâs I go with the Nisi True Color VNDâs.
Iâve got so many other VNDâs that Iâve collected over the years that Iâve not been happy with (including the overpriced polar proâs) and the Nisi no doubt is my favorite.
@@Alexratson Good to know. The issues is I need to add cpl to it.
I'm the dude that suggested the UWP 900mhz. I'm also rough on my gear. So, trust me when i say Polarpro Helix! It's only magnetic to start then it's locked down with a heavy twist. They have a filter that combines CP and ND. Also, they are tough built, come with a lifetime guarantee, and very neutral. Scientifically, it's basically impossible to be both ND and 100% neutral. Anyway, if you look at it and like it let me know I'd love to get some Polarpro credit lol or not. Also, if you do a Cleveland/Akron meet up I'd love to help you with that đ
@@natelehota thanks man. I needed up ordering two different filters so Iâll see how that goes. And thanks for the Cleveland invite!
Hey David there is a little problem with the DJI mic 2 adapter the camera does not recognize it right away you have to unplug it and plug it back in for it to work properly I am using a similar set up a7s3 and fx30
@@henryrivera3919 hmm I havenât had that issue yet but thanks for the insight.
I am a videographer based out of New York City and I would love to go to the next filmmaker meet up I New York
@@henryrivera3919 Would love to have you. Iâll be posting the time and dates as soon as my newsletter is out.
I would recommend a variable ND over a hard stop one any day of the week (Aside from built-in ND's). It obviously does the same thing, but it gives you so much more versatility and easy of use. I don't even want to attempt to count the number of times I would miss the shot if I had to lose time on changing a filter, having the variable ND is nice! Even when the lighting is not changing all that much, even turning to your side can require an exposure change and for those small differences VND helps a lot. Another useful application for VND is if you are doing a single camera interview and the lighting changes due to weather you can keep the shot going and just adjust the amount of VND, where you would have to jump in exposure without the filter. (this of course can also be overcome if you have a lens with a de-clicked aperture ring). There are plenty more cases where it's better to have an Variable ND rather than a fixed ND, but this comment is already very long haha. And also, I might be wrong on this one, every variable ND kind of does a little polarization itself so it might help in that way too but I wouldn't count on it. There are also some 2 in 1 filters that have both the VND and polarizer.
P.S. I Love and appreciate your videos on BTS stuff and all the things we as filmmakers go through! Keep it up! Hi from Bosnia and Herzegovina!
@@vasicmihajlo thanks for the insight. Trust me you are talking to a massive fan of variable nd as I have it on my fx6. For this shoot in particular, a single stop nd would be ok bc I can use the declicked aperture ring on my gm lens for minute adjustments. Iâll probably in the f4-f8 range mostly.
@@davidmorefield You're very welcome, yeah lenses with aperture rings are really awesome, as a canon shooter I'm very happy that new RF lenses are coming with them. Cheers and good luck!
I'm in the shopping market with your external ND choice too, im torn between Haida CPL VND 3-7 stop and the NiSi swift system but yet you mentioned the no magnetic so i'm leanning towards the haida.
@@SouthboundProduction Iâll share what I end up with!
@@davidmorefield please do! Thanks broski
+1 for the statement on magnetic VNDs. I got the Freewell with Mist option.. just had them with me in Namibia, super dusty and sandy shoots, a bunch of magnetic fragments from the sand ate their way in between the base and the filter, the main filter is pretty much done now due to scratches from said fragments between magnetic cap and front element. In hindsight not surprising but still a painful 400$ mistake now that whole purchase.
Not sure how normal VNDs would have performed in relation to sand and dust though.
Edit: on more conventional, corporate style doc shoots they worked fine for me though, even though I occasionally knocked off the front cap, the filter itself always stayed perfectly in place
@@ManuelGussmann Freewell sent it to me for free and Iâm glad they did bc I would have been really disappointed if I paid $500 for that bundle.
