History documentaries used to be awesome. Now history is apparently someone opening a storage shed with heavy metal playing and worrying about how much money he can make.
Haha, can't say I've seen the show you're referring to but sounds like something the History Channel would have on these days. The sad fact is most of those types of shows are so horribly scripted there's no reality to be had!
This game is fantastic, it really feels like the spiritual successor to Sid Meier's Gettysburg. It even prompted me to buy a book that i had all but forgot about, Brigades of Gettysburg, I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the specific details of what each of the Union and Confederate brigades did over the course of the battle.
I agree, the main advantage the confederates had early in the mission is artillery, and you almost ignored it for the entire battle. Just issuing poor moovment orders that got several artillery units routed. And leving behind, out of battle, other batteries. Not to speak about lines of fire or facing of the batteries. You could also have developed the whole strategy of this assault around softening up the union birgades, before coming in with the infantry to rout them. Thus avoiding lots of casualties for the next battle.
Your detailed description of the real battles whilst portraying them yourself is really good, and not many other people seem to know the background history of games like this. Also, will you get an image for your channel soon, don't mean to nag.
***** Wow, that was a quick reply. Again ,thanks for the videos. I'm from England, and I find the American Civil War really interesting, and the fact that you can give the information is really helpful. The English Civil War sure as hell isn't as interesting.
Sam Phillips I try to reply to as many of the comments on my channel as quickly as I can. I enjoy making videos and I try to include some educational bits in all of them. I am not an educator or in any way an expert but I like to think if I can do something a little different than what other people are and help people learn just a little then these videos actually have a purpose. Part of that is responding to questions and comments from people as quickly as I can :)
When Baxter's division tries to face-tank half your army and you point it out, I started laughing. I noticed it about a second before you and for some reason I found it hilarious.
While I like this game in theory it is one in which the AI will beat you every time even at the lowest level 1. Artillery is useless and won't fire when directed and when they do nothing happens. 2. Large infantry brigades will run even when in contact with skirmishers. 3. Your units no matter how carefully you deploy them will lose casualties at a rate far faster then the AI even when you are attacking skirmishers with a brigade. 4. There is a tendency for your units to instantly retreat after a brief contact even to the extend that they run right off the map board which mean it will take you the rest of the allowed game time just to bring them back to the battle. The game need a major rework with the AI trimmed down from genus to just average.
Thanks man! If there's anything you'd like to see let me know, I'm a bit busy with real life the next few days but within the next week I plan to start a new series.
I think you need to supervise your arty a bit more. Obviously it's quite hard to do while also giving commentary and so on, but lots of your guns were out of LOS for most of your game, or fired off salvo after salvo ineffectually at skirmishers.
Wow a great game and your knowledge of the Gettysburg battle surely does show! Good conservative tactics and allowing for leadership to be near the troops. An army with high morale and close support will fight with everything they have available to them.
Heaths writings talk of sending 2 brigades for shoes this is however unlikely since few days before another unit was in Gettysburg and would have taken them. 2 brigades may been bit over kill as well
+Santiago Gamer They could but I don't think they would. Creative Assembly is focused on epic era's of conflict and the American Civil War is too limited in scope for a TW game really, its not global enough. Though they did a more limited scale game in Shogun, I'm not sure American Civil War has the same global appeal as other conflicts.
The autofire of the brigades needs some work... Pettigrew spent alot of time during the middle-late part of the battle just standing around not shooting at the enemy despite being engaged.
I found your channel due to your EAW videos (great game). I'm Australian and not particularly familiar with this battle or the civil war. I really enjoyed your presentation style. The way the morale ebbs and flows does seem a bit rapid to me.
Good I'm glad you enjoy it! I want to get down to Australia in the next few years, I'm interested in Tennis and I'd like to get there to see an Australian Open before a guy I went to high school with retires. Would like to catch a match at the Australian Open and it would be doubly cool to see him play there, though I'd go either way.
I just got this game. Playing as the Union. I played the first battle as the Union. I held off the Confederates and they did not take any objectives. However I got a Minor victory. How would I score a major victory? Also there are three options at the end. Which one should I do? Looks like this game requires you to actually know the history of the battle before playing. It would be nice if there were some vignettes in between that let you know what was going on like Panzer General and Unity of Command, oh well, guess I'll be hitting wikipedia and watching youtube documentaries.
***** Any idea of how to download the original Sid Meier's Civil War games? While I like Ultimate General, I feel like Sid Meier's Civil War offered a little more versatility in maneuvering. Plus the in game audio I thought was better
I actually still have my disk for SMG. I will give you that, in fact the production value all around on SMG was great. Not sure how to go about getting it if you don't have the disk though. I'd have to see if the disk still runs on my system also.
Although you did very well, in my personal opinion, the Victory Point locations are too far back for the first scenario. Historically the Union forces were forced to retreat south and east of Gettysburg ONLY upon the arrival of the Confederate forces from the north. Expecting Heth's Division to accomplish these VP conditions on his own without a threat from the north, is ludicrous to say the least and it shows in the sheer number of Draw's players are getting in this scenario and that only because the reb players run a small force at the 750 VP's up north in a weird desperate dash. McPherson's Ridge should be the first scenario's VP locations and in fact is in every other game I've ever played on that first day's engagement.
Do you remember which documentaries I was referring too? Sorry I don't recall exactly which ones I was talking about here and I don't have time at the moment to re-watch the video.
Just in general, you talked about the cool diagrams and arrows and it reminded you about some documentaries that nobody watches anymore and now with newer CG could be better :D, btw you are awesome, just watching your videos
I'm not trying to be offensive, but there doesn't seem to be any logic in your approach, it's like you don't fully understand the game mechanics and the right road to success.
History documentaries used to be awesome. Now history is apparently someone opening a storage shed with heavy metal playing and worrying about how much money he can make.

Pretty much the History Channel has become to history what MTV use to be to music videos.
hawk55732 That's a new analogy to me but a good one!
Nah, that's just the effect rampant anti-intellectualism has on any medium operating under capitalism.
+dia
You can't blame *everything* on capitalism.

It's amazing,.I play the scenarios also,.They're incredible,.Hours and hours of joy

I've got a friend working on something actually for the image but I've been really bad about getting him screenshots for it.

***** Well, your probably one of the best people who I watch on CZcams for answering comments. Thanks!
When Baxter's division tries to face-tank half your army and you point it out, I started laughing. I noticed it about a second before you and for some reason I found it hilarious.

The way you know your history is very intriguing
Really enjoying this, you have a new subscriber. Very well done, love the history too.
Thanks man! If there's anything you'd like to see let me know, I'm a bit busy with real life the next few days but within the next week I plan to start a new series.
***** If they make any additions I'd love to see more of this. Keep up the good work.
metalman7791 certainly, there's also a pair of CZcamsrs I'll probably make a few multiplayer videos with when that comes out.
Excellent.
This was cool. Can't wait to see the next episode.
This was a really good playthrough, most people i watch arent very good at games they play but you seem like you know what you're doing
i lost intrest in the game a few min in but watched this whole video because of your voice.. you'r gifted dude
lol
Why does the game feel slower for me? Watching your game looks like it's sped up in relation to what I see when I play.
Very interesting. Thank you for the informative narrative.
Loving this series - Will be picking up this game soon.
something i noticed. This Video is a very nice 100th Video!!!
Congratulations on your 100th
Thank you! I had planned on something special but it kind of caught up to me and I also have a bunch of personal busy stuff going on this week.
Great choice on using the "Cunning" option for Union Ai
Ill watch em all. Great Videos. Keep it up.
If you click the bar at the top of the game it shows the number of troops and guns each side has as well as a balance of forces ratio
I think you need to supervise your arty a bit more. Obviously it's quite hard to do while also giving commentary and so on, but lots of your guns were out of LOS for most of your game, or fired off salvo after salvo ineffectually at skirmishers.
I thoroughly enjoyed it but I imagine like me the world and his wife were shouting and pointing at Baxter on the flank!
Wow a great game and your knowledge of the Gettysburg battle surely does show! Good conservative tactics and allowing for leadership to be near the troops. An army with high morale and close support will fight with everything they have available to them.
This Game in Multiplayer, Oh god the awesomness.
From what I hear I will be out of town when the MP is ready... if its ready when they plan.
I stumbled upon your channel pretty much by chance.
Love what you're doing so far :)
+1 sub
Heaths writings talk of sending 2 brigades for shoes this is however unlikely since few days before another unit was in Gettysburg and would have taken them. 2 brigades may been bit over kill as well
Love it!
Will watch all of this! :)
If there's ever a "Victoria Total War" a combat system like this would be far more handy than full real time.
Do u think that they could make a civil war total war
+Santiago Gamer They could but I don't think they would. Though they did a more limited scale game in Shogun, I'm not sure American Civil War has the same global appeal as other conflicts.
+riflemanusa Then don't play the game, Shogun Total War is one of the best in the series.
They should use it for all of them.
there's literally zero chance of those european nationalists ever making a game like that
What a coincidence, I'm watching this on the 2nd of July.
Great video. Easy sub
I'm just glad you pronounced Harry Heth's name correctly :P
The autofire of the brigades needs some work... Pettigrew spent alot of time during the middle-late part of the battle just standing around not shooting at the enemy despite being engaged.
Bought game but waiting to watch your battles before I start mine.
He could’ve taken seminary ridge so easy
im with you
the hell happened at the end? You were doing so well and then all of a sudden its like you went AFK.
+dowdpride1 He did a classic youtube gamer thing, were he spent to much time bloody talking and not paying attention to the game!
killed his divisions by not even playing the game, lost it in my opinion
You should try to flank them from behind more and take them by surprise it can turn the tide of battle pretty good
Oh and I’m also a new subscriber

Never gotten past day 3, always beat the Union back before then
haha why did you let your divisions get butchered. you should have kept oak hill and fortify it against the large enemy numbers
I just got this game. Playing as the Union. I played the first battle as the Union. I held off the Confederates and they did not take any objectives. However I got a Minor victory. I have the disc also and I don't think it has been playable since XP I think.

You are so underrated!, do you know where i can find some of those documentaries you spoke of?
Do you remember which documentaries I was referring too? Sorry I don't recall exactly which ones I was talking about here and I don't have time at the moment to re-watch the video.

Hoosiers :)
is there multiplayer or co op in this game?
Yes there is multiplayer. I don't believe however that the game includes a co-op mode.
hey there. just bought the game. watching your vids. thanx for uploads. want to beat on a noob in some multiplayer? ;-)
Is this game on steam?
Yes - store.steampowered.com/app/306660/
Not very good at this are we lol
I'm not trying to be offensive, but there doesn't seem to be any logic in your approach, it's like you don't fully understand the game mechanics and the right road to success.
Visually those doccos were the shit, but factually a lot of them were just shit. :/
