bootsy xDD costing him nearly 15,000 men LOL which was about the amount of men that made the charge that day against the union ;o so i guess if the confederates really had charged with no chance to retreat, they'd have won ;o
Your monologues, your play style, your willfully displayed lack of any knowledge as to the finesse of this game....all give me shivers running down my spine. Wha a mutilation of the senses!
When you charge, your dont actually fire back because their busy running so that gives the enemy time to shoot your troops as they approach. I suggest using artillery support targeting the position that you are charging. Since this is just a game, your troops dont recieve friendly fire.
I been looking for a game to play came across this title and looked on youtube to see the gameplay. didn't expect you to do a clevland brown voice lmao
As a student of the battle, reenactor, and someone who has walked the battlefield, it was a bit painful to watch your mistakes during this video. I do not have a computer but, as soon as my pay allowances show up in my paycheck I plan on getting one to play this. I played a similar game called Sid Meyer's Gettysburg back in the 90s. Anyways, here is some constructive feedback. Anyways, you sent most of your troops at the strongest point in the union line, and when the center broke you had nothing left to send in to exploit it. Unit cohesion is important in civil war strategy and you charged your men so much they were scattered and not in formation most of the time. However, I am not sure how realistic the game is in this aspect. Either way your lines broke repeatedly, and this is the reason why. Historically, the charge failed because there were no troops behind the spearhead to support the break in the line, but historically, the flanks were not heavilly attacked, as you did. When your extreme left was enveloped, you tried pulling them all back to save them. What you should have done was to have Avery hold, and to reform the rest of your troops behind him, reverse leap frog. Some might say it was a mistake to get put into that position in the first place, but regardless, you failed to properly correct it. A tough situation to fix either way. Given the distribution of your troops, (as per the historical scenario), the best approach would have been to engage the enemy on all fronts with minimal troops while collecting a reserve behind your line at Cemetery Ridge. Engaging the enemy holds them in place while you prepare the bulk of your forces for a strike at the most victory points. Order is key, so good, clean battle lines shaped like a wedge, with troops in the center behind the wedge to provide weight ( like ->), and tbe normal walking pace would be best. Once the center breaks, set up a few brigades in defensive positions around the victory points, with a brigade or two in reserve, and push for the remaining victory points with the remainder of your wedge. Use your diversionary troops as needed, but remember, your goal is to stretch out the enemy so he cannot concentrate his troops, so dont do much with your troops on the left and right flanks. When you attain the remaining victory points, set up defensive positions and defend only. No further attack is necessary. Keep your left and right flanks engaged,, and try to push forward to establish a line connected with your troops defending the victory points (otherwise the federals will attempt to surround your troops at the victory points) until time expires. This should result in a lower casualty count for you, and maybe their casuallty count will exceed yours when all is said and done. Also, bear in mind, that the COMMAND to charge is different than the ACT of charging. Picketts Charge happened at a walk, except for maybe 1-2 thousand men, if that, who got close enough where the order to charge was given. Historically, only around 12.5k confederate troops made up Picketts Charge, and when they reached the federal lines they were actually outnumbered. Only ~100 confederates made it over the infamous stone wall, and if Lee had sent the troops he had in reserve forward, they would have been able to break the center. They did break the center, outnumbered as they were, but they were not able to hold it, and reformed federal troops/federal reinforcements quickly regained control.
As someone who enjoys learning about military history (especially the civil war), I must thank you for this very well thought out post. I've also been on the battlefield (even did the "charge"), and a friend of ours who gave us a tour also mentioned many of the mistakes made during the battle, and how easily it could have been different.
No Man Uh, yeah? It was a major part of our history and had an equally large impact on the future of the country. Why wouldn't Americans make a big deal of it?
WarCollider I understand it was a huge part of your history but many countries have had 2-3 civil wars but many Americans think that they were the first.
I'm not sure where you got that impression from, but I can tell you that this isn't the case. Did you get that impression from the way we call it the Civil War instead of something like the United States Civil War? If so, that's just a shorter name. When someone refers to it as the Civil War, then it is generally understood that they are referring to the American Civil War. So if anything, it just means we have a strange naming convention, and not that we actually think we are the only ones who have had a civil war. :)
Cuphead Daily Roblox Do you think he was a Northerner? Don't worry about it though, here in the UK we love a deep Southern accent, it has character and a certain music to it. Northerners all whine 'nyah nyah' like Bob Dylan lol
Chris Proost Plus he called it stupid, which makes me laugh as some of the most prestigious colleges in America are located in the south. So the technically the farther south you go the smarter you get :p. The farther north you go the more political correctness you have to fend off.
Nero Avgvstvs I've always felt an affinity with Muricans but definitely more with the South, I just like the more chilled pace of life I guess(something to do with holidaying in Florida a ton of times perhaps?) I've been to New York but didn't like it much (don't like London much either) went to Vancouver and loved it but it's not Murica. As for the Civil War, I discovered the fascinating subject of history with it when I was 16 and without a massive interest in past events to keep me busy I reckon I may well have grown up wrong(er). Also, evil slavery association aside I think the stars and bars is a far prettier flag much like my own (UK)
yo DIplex you should read the little tutorial windows that come up at the start of the game for some additional ways to command your troops. For example you can form lines, group regiments and do other neat things. Chek it out man
I am only disappointed that there isn't another good Civil War game where it is a massive campaign. I appreciate this and the Total War mod that is out there.
Lots of battles were won by he south. The north lost over 100,000 more men than the south even thought the North had 5 to one manpower. Defense has major advantages and knowing the terrain.
In this reenactment game, the Confederates could see everything about the Union troops, as if by observing overhead by balloon! Then they zip all over the field, up hill in the heat, in response to whatever the Union troops are doing and wherever the Union troops are. And the Union troops don't don't have anyone in charge of them to oversee tactics during battle. The reality was almost exactly the reverse. The Union could look down the slope at where the Confederates were headed, over large distances, and had time to plan and respond. This game thus lacks all plausibility, and only shows "Picketts charge done right" in conditions of one-sided fantasy.
Samuel Kurtz Zook is the Zook that held you back in the game He was wounded on the second day of the Battle in the wheatfield part of the battle so his subbordinate should be listed when your playing this lieutenant Colonel John Fraser
lol with those losses that would of been the single bloodiest day in the entire civil war !!!! 25000 was antietam you got close to 33k, impressive carnage !!!
During the Civil War, a casualty rate of 10,000/1 hour would be unprecedented, especially in an area as localized as the Union line on Cemetery Ridge and Hill. Gettysburg casualties totaled around 52,000...for a 3 day period. Total casualties for the historic Pickett's Charge numbered at 8000, 6500 of which were Confederate. I would not want to see upwards of 28,000 wounded and dying men in a 3-4 square mile area, no sir-ee. :P
McEwanMaster As I understand it within the first 10 minutes or so of the final Union attack in the Battle of Cold Harbour the Union lost over 7000 men which was the most men lost in the shortest amount of time during the Civil War.
RainbowCynicism True that; it's not impossible that that casualty rate occurred across the ~7 mile long Union advance, although there's still some speculation on whether it was the first 10 minutes or merely the first hour. It really is a shame that battles like Cold Harbor aren't commemorated like many others, but the latter half of the war was really much "dirtier," so I can at least partially understand most people's hesitations.
I'm an American so of course I always rooted for the Union, naturally. The civil war was the most idiotic and pointlessly fought war of all time, but I feel horrible for the losses caused by pickets charge. It was horribly executed and because of it they lost almost everyone.
If I played against you there you'd have lost both flanks on the attack in the third half xD that'd have been a sight. Clumped up Virginians in the center, ready to be taken down with artillery
Pickett led 15,000 men into the face of the defensive Union position. They had superior numbers, but came under artillery fire the entire way across the field, and finally dove face first into Union guns. At the time Pickett felt invincible. Some of his officers even advised against it, but he was too eager to finish the drawn out battle. It was a stupid decision on his part from the start. Yay for changing history!
+Ross Scoggins I think you're mixing it up. Lee ordered the attack, but Longstreet (one of his corps commanders/general commanding the attack) advised against it. Pickett led only one element of the charge, alongside Pettigrew and Trimble.
I wonder what'd happened If there was a little Company Of Heroes or those guys from "Over There" series. Would they stand any chance with those battalions and legions of union and confederation united in the bush? Btw check out my brand new GTA V and Fallout 3 series!
lol you played easy difficulty and the scenario in which all of your brigades are at 100% of their strenght. you should play the complete battle. at this point you would probably have half of the man you had
First thanks for posting this. The game looks great. I really enjoyed watching how it works. But you realize each brigade has a morale and condition which affects its performance and at no time did you seem to pay any attention to that. Also you didnt seem to notice until the very end the 10,000 VP in the centre which was the goal of Picketts charge. Donèt mean to be too critical but you seemed to play it a bit like a point and click and it seems much deeper than that. Cheers
I've seen the woods and the field that the confederates charged across. I guess seeing as I live only a half an hour away from the battlefield, that isn't that surprising, but still..

As cool as this is I can't say its pickets charge done right as orders would not be real time which drastically changes the tactics and the ability to plan and order effectiveness is decreased
Great engine for a Civil War game. I think I'll pick this one up shortly, looks amazing. Though of course, as an Ohio native, I'll be naturally inclined to kick Confederate ass.
i have this as well, my questions is - why do some of my cannons just stay idle while some are busy firing? its not like they're out of range or out of ammo or somethin. Weird.

Watching your vids and listening to your banter is a special glimpse into the mind of a madman's internal monologue. Just like when I play games...
Let me quote you on that!

I need a Napoleonic version of this
I think dont exist

I have 2 TW videos for tomorrow, and a very special MoW video for Friday followed by another TW video!
Long Live Virginia! 55 Virginia Essex Greys G coy!
Diplex I can't explain why you are not a youtube partner really you need to be one!

the southern forces had limited artillery ammunition and was poorly aimed. Pickett's forces were cut to pieces by Union canister fire.
Very entertaining! "What are you doing? Are you even shooting?" Hilarious!
I've just played this battle, and I won it. I lost 13828 and my opponent lost only eleven more men. That was just ridiculously close.

omg I love the way you talk and give out the orders!
LOVED it
LOVED your southern "Lee" accent haha
haha that was awesome Diplex, I really enjoyed watching the battle unfold in the way it did. An interesting game to watch!
This guy's narration of the battle is hilarious.
I've watched around 100 hours of LP's of this game, you are the only player that wasn't negligent of there artillery. So ikudos to you sir.
More videos like this. Love games from this period and ww1 if you have any more
You are one of my favorite gamers and I love the Civil War, so your are AWESOME!!
Thank you! :)

As a southerner, I actually came to the idea of winning this battle.
lol i love your strat... a single brigade? Send in the whole army...lol

This game reminds me of Sid Meier's Gettysburg. Great game.
One thing I miss (after years) in UGCW was the desision making from UGG
Cool, I've been trying different Confederate strategies in this scenario - didn't think of attacking with everything!
that accent was amazing
Diplex when you say a very special video then i am confused because all your videos are more than very special #DiplexisGod
Ultimate General : Waterloo anyone??! Would like to see that. Borodino Austerlitz maybe. Could be rly awesome!!
Samuel Kurtz Zook is the Zook that held you back in the game He was wounded on the second day of the Battle in the wheatfield part of the battle so his subbordinate should be listed when your playing this lieutenant Colonel John Fraser
And also, when your artillery are moving they arent shooting. So position them with discretion.
You must really hate the Yankee.
Darth Vader helped make this? Awesome!
lol with those losses that would of been the single bloodiest day in the entire civil war !!!! 25000 was antietam you got close to 33k, impressive carnage !!!
This game looks awesome! You think Cemetery Ridge would be clearly labeled.
+accent77 It is in big bold text but the text was hidden under like 7000 Union soldiers
this game just awesome
Holy f***, 33,000 casualties in 3 hours? That'd be quite the topic of discussion if it happened in real life, lol.
It did happen on several occasions and correct me if I'm wrong I'm farely sure that close to 33,000 did die in that battle
During the Civil War, a casualty rate of 10,000/1 hour would be unprecedented, especially in an area as localized as the Union line on Cemetery Ridge and Hill. It would be cool if they made an ultimate general game that's set in the war of 1812 or the revolution war
Love this game.
13:15 of course kershaw broke all of them by himself. hes practically a hero unit haha
yo i want this game it looks cool
11:51 LOL
I'm an American so of course I always rooted for the Union, naturally. The civil war was the most idiotic and pointlessly fought war of all time, but I feel horrible for the losses caused by pickets charge. It was horribly executed and because of it they lost almost everyone.
did this Games Have Brigadier General Alfred Moore Scales in it that Brigade was Led By Colonel William Lee Joshua Lowrance during the charge
If I played against you there you'd have lost both flanks on the attack in the third half xD that'd have been a sight. Clumped up Virginians in the center, ready to be taken down with artillery
The CAUTIOUS AI setting was the sole reason why your troops kept retreating from charges. A charge is not CAUTIOUS, but reckless.

I think you're mixing it up. Lee ordered the attack, but Longstreet (one of his corps commanders/general commanding the attack) advised against it. Pickett led only one element of the charge, alongside Pettigrew and Trimble.
Good vid. Campaign mayb?
America has one civil war and they never stop going on about my God......
You should change it to Trivial Thursdays :3
you should definitely make a series of this game it would be awesome to see more of this
I wonder what'd happened If there was a little Company Of Heroes or those guys from "Over There" series.
More? Perhaps a custom battle?
"This is historically upsetting for some people because I don't think this is what happened." lol No sir, no it is not. haha
What I would try maybe is charging the full force under the cover of cannon fire, and hold, would that work?
The charge never should have happened.
Cheers
This is pretty much the successor to Sid Meiers Gettsyburgh?
Colonel John Mercer Brockenbrough
I've seen the woods and the field that the confederates charged across. I guess seeing as I live only a half an hour away from the battlefield, that isn't that surprising, but still..
Where is the Union VI Corps? Your scenario left them out.
God damn CZcams!!. Sort out 720 already
Thanks for supporting slavery Diplex. ;)
Deserters reserves
i hope the developer make a napoleonic version of this game
Well, so far as i've read on the web, they say that they could easely expand into napoleonic Warfare, since so many of the Combat dynamics are similar. :) You can read it from here: www.pcgamesn.com/ultimate-general-gettysburg/total-war-modder-to-wargame-maker-nick-thomadis-road-to-ultimate-general-gettysburg

No, nothing at all :D
Press m for better cannon and troop placement
As cool as this is I can't say its pickets charge done right as orders would not be real time which drastically changes the tactics and the ability to plan and order effectiveness is decreased
That's the most ironic title I've ever seen. :P
Well... I did what the Confederates were unable to do :)
DiplexHeated Well... Yeah, that's true!
DiplexHeated Pretty thankful the Confederates didn't have you as their general because then they would of won the war. XD
Mahoganyracecar "Pretty sad the Confederates didn't have you as their general because then they would of won the war. :[" There fixed it for you.

@Diplexheated in what order of missions that you unlock the Pickett charge i still haven't unlock it
And losing less men then real Confederates did in the real charge :) Nice done!
What music is in the intro to this video?
kershaw and jillbert
What's the unit and map scale in this game?
I think you would have been more successful if you wouldn't advance troops that were at very low morale and condition and if you would have kept the corps commanders near their troops instead of moving them near other corps' troops.
Too bad that this does not take into account casualties from the previous 2 days.
