    Did you know that Cooder originally wanted to use a Rickenbacker horseshoe-magnet lap steel pickup for his first Coodercaster, but he couldn't get his hands on one, and apparently Lindley had a spare Valco which he donated; I heard he also gave Ry the Teisco Gold Foil, so it seems David Lindley (RIP-LEGEND) had a great deal of input on the making of the Coodercaster. It seems that Ry's latest one indeed has one of the Ric horseshoe pups, and that's now his main guitar.
    My own Coodercaster utilizes a 50s Ric Horseshoe, a 60s Teisco Gold Foil, in a Thinline Tele 'hog' body, with a Bigsby and a 27" bari Tele neck! I built it around 10 years ago; did all the routing and wiring myself; it is truly a monster.
    I also built another one-of-a-kind 'Franken-Caster' that is an 8 string/6 course 30" bari (built on a Bronco Bass platform,) that uses a Danelectro Lipstick and a Teisco Gold Foil. I just posted a short demo of it it u wanna check it out.

    Man that was very cool! I've been a Ry Cooder fan since I first heard his soundtrack music for the old 1981 movie Southern Comfort. I've always loved the haunting sound of slide guitar. As for that distinctive Ry sound, dude you've nailed it! Those are two very cool guitars you have there.

    the original Supro/Valco pickups are SINGLE COIL (I took one apart to fix it because the pole piece screws were rusted in place and frozen). The gold foil pickups (Teisco?) are probably single coil as well. If the string balance and volume of the opposite ends of the Supro pickup aren't equal you've probably misaligned the bar magnets on the side-ends.

      The Guitar Show you're welcome. Slide playing looks real easy, but to make it sound right, isn't so easy! You've got it right! That's funny about the wood too. I guess it would be more prone to breakage and may make a difference with tone. I do know it sure looks nice though!

    I like the telecaster sound. My first guitar was a Tiesco in 1965, kind of crappy but it was great for me plugged into a transistor amp with an 8" speaker. It had great pickups but I was too young to appreciate them. I just set the strings up high on my Tele nowadays and it's just fine for my slide stuff. You got a good sound man!

    In late '72, I bought my first electric guitar, an audition Jag alike. $12.00 from my best friend. Put LaBella flatwounds on to get tough. Worked.
    Good pups, later known as Gold Foils,,,,six circles with two long ovals under.
    Wish I had a good amp then.

    I like what you did so much that I’m planning a build or conversion of maybe a Tele. It seems that pickup guys, pros, great at winding anything, can take a P-90, a bridge position Jazzmaster, Tele bridge and prolly others, make them taller and use heavier wire to get that lap steel sound. Maybe needs a deeper rout. For my lousy budget, it would save designing a custom bridge. Even if it gets close I’d be happy. Thanks for all the work you put into your music and sharing it. Fantastic stuff!

    Sounds great and played great! Can you give us your opinion on the tone of the Mojo string through Tele without the big plate verses the tone on the Strat with the plate? I've heard that the base plate version has a bigger tone but I've never had the opportunity to A/B.

    • @TheGuitarShow
      @TheGuitarShow  Před 6 lety

      Good point - they sound a little different but bear in mind my plate is an original from the 50s. I guess theres more metal but it makes the guitar heavier for sure!

    @markferguson3745 Před 3 lety

    One of the great things about designated slide guitars is that you can employ designs that might not make easy standard players, but have a great sound ,despite that.The older Silvertone, Danelecto, Kay, Teisco, etc, - which were sometimes designed like a doorstop, -can lend themselves to the job.Look for the right pickups, and a great unplugged ,acoustic , sound, - and maybe replace the crap tuners, or the occasional scratchy pot, - and you'll look cooler than you probably are.
    There are a couple main schools of thought regarding slide technique, which you'll notice by casting about a little on line; some suggest that you employ standard set ups, and standard tunings, and they aptly prove this is viable, - but ,-the sound is distinctly singular if you go all in, with the higher action, pickups, etc.
    I've become pretty clear on the kinds of sounds I prefer by experimenting, and it is , unquestionably, a whole different world.
