- The 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 is not just another update; it's a statement of intent from the German automaker. Scheduled to hit dealerships in early 2024, this revamped electric SUV promises to redefine what we can expect in terms of performance and interior sophistication. Assembled with German precision at VW's Chattanooga facility, the new ID.4 is poised to set new benchmarks in the electric vehicle segment.
Let's talk powertrain first. The ID.4's new drive unit, paired with an 82-kWh battery, is nothing short of a revelation. It churns out an impressive 282 horsepower in the rear-wheel-drive configuration and a staggering 330 horsepower in the all-wheel-drive model. To put that into perspective, that's a leap from the previous 201 horsepower and 295 horsepower in the rear-drive and AWD versions, respectively. It's not just about raw power, though; Volkswagen hints that this new drive unit will also extend the vehicle's range, although the automaker is keeping those numbers under wraps for now.
Range anxiety? The current ID.4 models already offer compelling figures. The Pro variant, equipped with an 82-kWh battery and 19-inch wheels, boasts a range of 275 miles, matching its more upscale sibling, the Pro S with 20-inch wheels. The AWD versions aren't far behind, delivering a respectable 255 miles.
Inside, the ID.4 takes a quantum leap in terms of tech and comfort. The centerpiece is a new 12.9-inch infotainment screen for the 82-kWh models, replacing the previous 12-inch display. This isn't just a size upgrade; Volkswagen promises a more intuitive user interface, especially for climate controls, along with revamped menus. The gear selector has also been thoughtfully repositioned to a stalk on the steering column, offering drivers a more ergonomic experience.
Comfort isn't compromised either. The ID.4 S trim, when paired with the 82-kWh battery, now offers ventilated seats for those up front. If you're an audiophile, the S Plus trim is your sanctuary, featuring a Harman/Kardon nine-speaker sound system complete with a 16-channel amplifier.
Wheel aficionados will appreciate the new options. The Standard AWD variant rolls out with 20-inch wheels, while the S Plus gets a set of eye-catching 21-inchers, adding both aesthetic flair and potentially better road handling.
Battery configurations remain versatile, catering to a range of driving needs. The base Standard and S trims come with a 62-kWh battery, while the higher-end Pro, Pro S, and Pro S Plus trims offer the beefier 82-kWh option, available in both rear- and all-wheel-drive setups.
