Have enjoyed every book I’ve read by Hiaasen. So surprised others haven’t been made into movies or TV shows. I have to agree with Hiaasen’s feeling about the paving over of FL. My daughter has lived there for over 25 years, first in the Keys and now in Clearwater area. Have visited 2-3 x a year, and even had a house in Clearwater (for winters) for a few yews. It’s only seems to be getting worst and worst. Anytime I hear someone saythey dream of or are going to retire to FL, I suggest they go down and rent first. Because if you’ve only been there on a fun vacation at the beach or in Orlando …. You’ve not seen or experienced the REAL Florida.

Hiaasen is my literary candy. I’ve had the good fortune of meeting him at three book signings and he is as funny in person as he is in print. His characters are so hilariously over the top that for his villains, each chapter is like a countdown to their demises.

Florida's actually gotten worse than a Hiaasen novel now especially with development. He's one of my favorite writers and one of the few that captures Florida well.
Love Carl Hiaasen’s books!!! Skinny Dip should be made into a movie or miniseries!!! Such a hilarious and not unbelievable story. Anything can and does happen here. I hope this series opens people’s eyes and awareness of how our beautiful state is being destroyed.

The paving over of Florida is what we let happen. Suburban sprawl, driving, easy modern life conveniences, the american dream/rat race. Electricity, fossil fuel power, air conditioning, sports/sport teams/sport facilities, suburban sprawl, development piece meal without a plan, public school systems, industrial farming, megastores, golf courses.
You can't rail against overdevelopment and then celebrate millions of people being resettled in Florida. They are going to need some place to live. 60% of all immigrants who have entered the US have been processed through Florida. That's the frustrating thing about these boomers, an unwillingness to acknowledge the obvious issues.
Right, he's a talented guy but also part of the Unlimited Mass Migration crowd.....well, guess how we're going to accommodate the larger population. New developments.
When I started reading--a couple years after high school--I read a lot of depressing stuff. But then one day I picked up a Carl Hiaasen novel and found out I like comedy in the books I read. So after that, no matter the genre, the book needed to make me laugh.

It wasn’t a “small town newspaper”. It was the Capital Gazette. The Annapolis, Maryland paper and 5 people were murdered when a right-wing nutjob stormed the building on a killing spree. Hiaasen’s brother was a revered journalist and wonderful human being that was senselessly murdered in that 2018 massacre.
I too, have little patience for drivers in Florida. I have to inform ppl, with 22 million people now living in my home state, bad driving habits come with them.
I watched the first episode and I liked it. Going to watch the whole series. What he’s really talking about with regards to Florida is the same thing that other popular states in the country have, too many people. There’s overpopulation on the planet at 8.1 billion and counting. Nobody will admit it. Kansas doesn’t have this problem, in fact you can get free land in small towns because they want people to move there. There are counties in Kansas that have lost 25% of their population. That ain’t happening in Florida. I like Hiaasen.
Another person to admire for calling attention to the degradation of our cities and natural areas. There are definitely villains in this situation and Hiaassen is not afraid to expose their stupidity and their lack of propriety. The natural world is being destroyed all around us and that is not an exaggeration. Cities have become horrible places for us -- this is often because there are so many people competing for quick profits. One way they achieve that is to build the cheapest and ugliest houses, stores and office buildings and then build more. It is never enough.
Love Carl Hiaasen and his work. Don’t care that much for the TV show of Bad Monkey. Think it could have been made better, starting with the casting of the lead. VV is a good comedic actor but wrong for the role, I feel…

Politics has ruined education. It's ruined science. It's ruined medicine. It is ruining the arts. Just write good stories. Report on good authors. We don't need the little dog whistles of "Trump bad snake bad" with giggles. Basically, with those little comments, you turn off half the potential audience. Vince Vaughn is a great actor, and he's not a Hollywood far left activist. He just makes good films.
We can always count on Lesley Stahl to show her unprofessional, unintelligent bias. Her political utterances are mundaine and sickening. A real turn off. Ya'd think, she'd fix that, but no, same old spew.

Carl Hiassen, the very definition of a “limousine liberal”, whines and complains about people and development, yet still lives in the Miami Metropolitan area. Why don’t he and his husband choose live out in the Everglades if he is so wanting to be close to nature.
Well he wouldn't move to the Everglades as someone who cares about the conservation of a local ecology. But I do agree, he is a bit of a hypocrite. He admits to being an aggressive driver yet cares about "nature." He complains about the impacts of the population boom, that has happened everywhere, and not just Florida, but still has kids.
As a Florida native, Carl Hiaasen has been a favorite author of mine since the 1980s!

Love him! As a Miamian I feel privileged growing up reading Carl's column and Dave Barry's in the Herald.
Hoot was one of my favorite movies growing up - sometimes those ratings just don't do it justice in the eyes of the kids watching!
Hopefully one day that story won’t hold up so well. Great film for kids to be able to watch.

I'm reading Bad Monkey right now! I love his work and have read four already and plan on reading many more.
