Jimmy makes it look good...gotta try it.
Jimmy l know, you know the Car Wizard David.
He knows some people who can reprogram the computers for the Engine and the transmission for more and better BTU's.
What makes you think this was Elvis Presley's jet?
@@saphireblue3563 Rewind and look at the Paperwork.
Ruining a perfectly good steak eith bacon grease. Yuckypoo!!!
Random thought: self leveling jack system like motorhomes have, but activated by the real landing gear lever.
Yes.
Liquid suspension.
House jacks would do this job. We use them for replacing house piles, Hydraulics are your friend.
Yessssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!! That would be TOTALLY RAAAAAD!
Hey jimmy I worked around big trucks for a while and am pretty sure you can’t weld them frames. It is supposed to have flex. When you weld it it work hardens the frame and makes it brittle. Ah it’ll be fine
What could possibly go wrong?
@@irgski it will be fine!
@@irgski frame cracks where the weld is
When that guy was talking I actually thought that I had my speed at 2X because he talks so fast but actually clearly!
Well this was one of the most heart rate up beating videos of you. That plane standing only on jacks without backup while you guys were working beneath it, scary as hell.
Yes…. Yes it was….
I was going to say the same - cringe and gut tension for sure, but, I kept reminding myself: he edited this so he was alive and well when he posted the video 😂!!!
What could possibly go wrong...
When I got to that part of the video I saw what you were talking about. Toe curling for sure. 😳
now if that be me doing this kind of thing, jack it up as far as, that front oleo has some travel on it, clear the decks completely out the way, if things go south, you need somewhere to run like a headless chicken, get that chassis lined up, shuv it under as far as it will go up close to the nose gear, and then remove the gear, if things go south, then at least the fuselage can only go as far as the chassis and not on your head
i've been in a position working beneath an unsafe fuselage where something like this could have gone wrong due to someone else's stupidity, i took photographs, showed the boss, who ignored them, never told the offending person off, he still works there, and i have moved on since, can anyone explain that to me?
I think the reverse bow in the metal super structure is there for a reason. Once all the weight of the cabin is put on top, it levels off on its own and subsequently doesn’t bow the wrong direction which could create problems.
It is called a canter.
Here to make same comment. Easy example anyone can see is look at flatbed semi trailers loaded then UNLOADED. Depending upon the trailer load rate, there’s a giant hump/cantor to them.
I agree….
Same here.
@@wessims5534 CAMBER
Cut the bottom of the Jet out to recess the frame into the plane. This will make it lower to the ground and more stable when driving.
Too late now, but... that bow in the frame is intentional. I recently left a large trailer manufacturing company. We designed that IN!
Idea being that the weight would be placed mid-ship between the axles, and then it flattens out.
I have to say Jimmy. I had my doubts, but you're actually making it happen.
Yay the moment we’ve been awaiting for some time, whe. The Elvis jet becomes the Elvis Jet Motorhome, sweeet what could go wrong.
Your Expression at 2:02:07 was " What have I gotten myself into? Why did I think this was a good Idea? ". I know that face. I've made that face.
I can not explain how much I enjoy watching people who know nothing about welding try to weld. I think you would be way ahead buying a bigger wire fed welder with a tank of gas. Should make things a lot easier for you to weld all that. No slag to chip off, etc
Elvis truly was a genius. Invented a jet engine powered entirely by worms.
Hahahaha
Jimmy, not telling you how to do it but I would have cut a chanel in the fuselage and set it down as low as you could get it. It's going to be way top heavy the way you're doing it plus you're going to have clearance issues when traveling with it.
Making that custom socket wrench is proof positive that Necessity truly IS the Mother of Invention. Good Job!!!
A grinder and paint make me the welder I ain't.
Is the curve engineered into the frame, is it bowed because there is no longer a load on the frame ? As an example you see empty trailers with upward bows, that are level when loaded. What will leveling the frame prior to reintroducing a load onto the frame. I'm obviously not a engineer, just a observation.
It would be a PITA but notching the body to sit inside the frame rails of the motorhome chassis would help with your height problem. You're going to want to build an air box around the engine anyway and dropping the fuselage a foot and a half would help out. The other thing you could look at is putting the fuselage on airbags between the body and frame.
Been waiting for this moment for 4 years.....
I started shaking my head as soon as i saw you welding with that little welder, & before i could scold you in the comments you took care of the problem. Hats off to you Sir. Also, i was blown away when i heard the guy driving the 310 Car say he ran a 12 in the ¼ mile. Thats actually really fast for something like that.
Between your channel and Vice Grip Garage I get my fill of seat-of-your-pants builds and "happy accidents!" Keep up the good work.
Wow.... never thought I'd see you go from making bad airplane purchases to making bad welds... LOL. Glad you found a better person for the job.
Hey Jimmy it's Joey I met you near Wichita, KS. We have a huge airshow with the blue angels at McConnell AFB coming next summer and they are starting the planning. I don't know if this would be ready in time but it would be amazing to be at our airshow. They always put on a huge event! I just wanted to let you know. It's always a 2 day event and we'd love to see ya there!
That would be awesome! however, I'm not 100% sure I can make the date. My for sure date is EAA Airventure in July :)
You'll need to remove 12 to 18 inches from the bottom of the fuselage. This will widen your attach points. The pressure tube will need to be cut into so the chassis can move forward, putting the front tire just in front of the airstair. Then the over-all unit will be less top-heavy. The DC-3 'conversions' I've seen had the bottom of the fuselage removed to give better attach points and roadability. That way you can clear many bridges/over-passes. Just my $.02 worth 🙂
Ayyyyy, love seeing the 310, I also have access to one! They're beautiful planes, the polished is by far the best look!
You could not pick a more difficult rod to start welding with especially when going vertical or overhead!
My 0.02, acft needs to be down about 2-3 feet, make it fit this is " The Elvis Jet" Sir, make us proud.
Hey Jamie, I think you got the cart in front of the horse. You should have had all that stuff taken care of before you put that frame under there and I think you're going to have to cut that bottom of that airplane so that that frame goes up inside. Otherwise it's just going to be way too top every
Are you planning to restore the paint and paint the chassis and really spiff it up? I hope so. Great job and I am sure glad no one got hurt.
That's the plan!
Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy. That was one hell of a situation you had with it sitting on the jacks and you crawling around under it without any safety backup support.
Don’t ever do that again. God my heart can’t take it.😢
With this project....the question will always remain...."What could possibly go wrong?".😅
Is it really ok in US to weld into the busframe? In Sweden its not...but great work anyway and keep the videos coming!!
It is for non-commercial (here we call them DOT) vehicles.
Ok Thanks !@@hardwurkindaddy
It also depends on the type of frame. A hardened steel frame you can't weld, those need to be riveted.
But most US stuff is made as cheaply as possible, so it's safe to weld.
This one is hardened steel..@@agentcrm
Jimmy: “I have a gift for you” Gift: actually materials for my project you’re working on! 🤣
Don’t forget to like & subscribe!👍
Just what I love about your channel. You cover many topics in one video to keep us engaged. Elvis plane/bus build, the very cool Cessna 310 very fast car built by Speedycop that was built in the same year as the Silver Bullet, but... we also get to see you cook up some good NY strips from Good Ranchers. Cooking lesson BONUS!!! Thanks Jimmy, always good content.
Thats right you get the 👉 point..👌
Absolutely loving watching this Build come together and once again what could possibly go wrong
You might look into the Lockheed P3 Orion's airstairs. They might be a better fit for your Lockheed jet Star RV. And with Luck, they should fit.
Put it as low as it will go on the Frame. The center of gravity is too high.
Still will need a camera system to see around it.
You can use plate steel instead of box steel. Or just use the rubber body mounts right on the frame. I'm trying to help get the stairs to the ground.
If the nose in lower by 6° or so.
it will help with visibility. And not look stupid.
Wow, that is the most backyard on-the-fly engineering I've seen yet. There were (and still will be) some really dangerous things to contend with. A gantry crane and some straps would have lowered my blood pressure a LOT. Jimmy, you've got lady luck on your side. It's a miracle that thing didn't fall off the jacks and hurt or worse, kill somebody.
Who cares about your blood pressure.
Man keep flying... as you are better pilot than... well lets say a welder...nice job keep posting i love your videos
Can't believe that Jimmy didn't shift some finances around and didn't put the $30,000,000 into restoring the jet back into mint condition. For shame.
In all seriousness, I'm not even a big Elvis fan but its always cool when you dedicate care and effort to anything old like this. Even if you know nothing about planes, those of the mechanical persuasion have tons to appreciate about Jimmy's videos.
Jimmy my late uncle Eddie went through basic training in the Army and stationed in Germany. I used to visit my grandparents house after high school and remember my aunt's all fawning over the man that I met that said "Just Call Me Elvis" when he visited my uncle. Seems he bought Eddie a full dressed Harley that scared him so he took him out and bought him a new Cadillac instead. I almost got flown out to Southern California on the jet as he also was friends with my second cousin Nick Adams
@@Manic-Mechaniclmao
You guys (rock and roll) Elvis would be proud
Those welds are not too bad considering... they will hold as long as you didn't make the metal brittle next to them. You are actually lucky the on chassis generator isn't working, most ground to the chassis, having the generator grounded to what you are welding can cause issues. I would not grind down the welds, ugly strong welds are better than pretty ground down welds.
There are things I would do differently (the x brace I would of put in first so I could weld it into the existing c channel, and then plate it, it is always stronger to weld to the original vs stacking on bracings onto bracings.
Cut resistant gloves :)
1:44:48 - That front landing gear would make an awesome lamp to auction off!! Like the Leg Lamp from A Christmas Story.
Well, its not the Oscar Meyer Weiner-mobile, but your getting close!
When I thought my older brother was crazy for take'N a perfectly good Suburban and putting a perfectly good Scarab boat on top of it and making roadworthy vehicle smiling like SpongeBob driving down the road .let's just say everybody loves it
Are you guys around Detroit? I saw someone did that for the Gambler 500.
How about adding the original wing tanks, mount them down low beside the frame and they'll add some ballast to it. Not to mention some super long distance fuel storage.
I actually thought you were going to section out the bottom of the fuselage to get it a bit lower. Great progress!
I'd second that sentiment. CG is way to high... After all, what could go wrong? Lower it about a foot or two.
Would look better if they cut the bottom off at the cross brace
@@avflyguy CG is definitely a concern here. RV's are built as light as possible above the frame. That can be somewhat mitigated by adding ballast in the space between the bottom of the fuselage and cabin floor and/or in the space between the frame rails (which was done to some extent in this video by beefing up the chassis). But ballast comes at the expense of fuel economy and braking distance. Brakes should definitely be redone and beefed up as part of the road-worthiness process. But nonetheless this is a VERY cool project!
Looking at this episode made me realize that you actually are pulling this project off. Looking good Jimmy and Bear.
use the orignal yoke as streering and make sure them both are linked together itd be cool
That is the wildest thing I have ever seen. A car plane, it would turn heads everywhere. 😂
Probably too late in the game now, but any time you have something up in the air like that you should use cribbing to support it. The nice thing is, you can leave it in place and add or remove one level at a time when raising and lowering it. That way if something goes wrong it will only fall the distance of one level of your cribbing.
Glad it worked out.
What a milestone! Congrats. I'm already exchausted from just imagining taking on a project like that and you are actually doing it. Kudos!
You bought a brand new buzz box?!? LAUGHING STOCK
And the Angels sing as the Grizzman takes his first bite.🥩 Mmm... good looking meat and that comes from someone who raises Florida beef. Don't forget to place a small offering out for King of R&R's disembodied ghost. KARATE CHOP! ✋
Jimmy, you are an absolutely freaking madman - and I am here for it all the way!
Ive been waiting for this for SO long! Thank you Jimmy and Grizzley for making this happen! I cannot wait to see the next video. This is gonna be a fun series!
WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO! You rule Jimmy!! Wow and apparently you have a new editor in the house!
The best way is to warm up the frame where it is bend, this way you get the tention out of the metal. But... You most know how to do this. I have seen people try to do it cold with chains and pulling. Hahaha.. 😊
The Best! These are my modern day internet role-models! I really look forward to the outcome! Go Jimmy!!! Greetings from South Africa!
Please not ELVIS' JET to quote Indiana Jones "IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM!!"
The first rule in “wild projects”, have “friends” that weld, do hvac, are A&P w IA, all necessary in Jimmys world.
Now this is an undertaking. Dang cool one as well. Could be a nifty air bnb as well .
watch out for radiation burns! You need a welding jacket!
thanks for making my morning a little better,
this thing is just awesome lol, CLEAR PROOP !
Jimmy your are the man!!! I'm sure the wife has cold sweats até night!!😂
This vid put the biggest smile on my face the whole time I was watching that drivable 310 and the fact that it's in a video where Jimmy is taking Elvis's old jet and putting it on an RV chassis is way way cool, and I'm def gonna check out speedycops content. Speedycop def wins the coolest cop ever award by far 😆.
An incredible accomplishment congratulations!
Heart in mouth kind of moments !
I was on pins and needles! Can't wait till next video. This is gonna be awesome when you get finished.
That looks real safe...when I want to die I always crawl around under Mickey Mouse engineering.
Looking awesome Jimmy can't wait to see this project finished and on the road
spray the frame with Pan to eliminate splatter from sticking.
Good progress Jimmy. Very cool to see the chassis under the jet body. You'll be driving around the country before you know it. Liked the 310/car as well.
I can see your electric panel in the back corner, it would take 15 mins to add a 220VAC outlet for the welder. Considering you have room in the box for a 220v breaker
shhhhh we definitely did not do that....
Jimmy. Your antics put a smile on my face every time I watch one of your videos! Best of luck on the Elvis Mobile!
Elvis never stepped foot on that thing
Hey Jimmy, try this bbq steak tip. Salt and pepper exactly 1 hour before you grill. You can thank me later ;)
Jimmy.... you are T H E man !!!! along with T H E team !!!!
you guys should get in touch with the low buck garage guy. not sure if he would want any part of this, but he is very good at putting things together, big things. and an interesting personality. I hope all those welds don't break because it looks like you were making one long weld. supposed to leave gaps for expansion and contraction then go back and fill them.
This is really INCREDIBLE...unbelievable!!
The fuselage will support a lot of that torsional load, although it will have to go through those rubber mounts. Love the Elvis music in the video, nice touch!
Its so encouraging to see your joy when doing things or helping others!!
I was also thinking the RV was suposed to go to someone who 'needed it',,,,not a personal boondogle project ?
@@tcvideosennistexas they found out it was in such bad shape. That it would not be a good thing to give away to the family in need.
Instead, they gave the family a very generous donation of money and other things to help them.
One of Jimmy's videos shows it.
Looks like you might want a camera system like they have in some of the off-road trucks. It might give you a better view while driving to see what is around you.
hi, love the channel been watching for years. I was a vehicle and chassis fabricator for many years working on refuse, recycling and commercial vehicles, looking at the chassis and the shape of the fuselage I would suggest that a type of cradle to carry the fuselage mounted on the side of the chassis frame with a cross member in between the rails, this would allow the whole thing to be mounted a lot lower improving the entry and more than probably the handling of the finished project. These are just my ideas and I hope they may be of use. CLEAR PROP. Dave in the UK.
Id strongly recommend doing what you can to get the plane as low as possible. Id want the belly of the jet cradled by the frame rails or even inset the frame rails into the belly a bit. It will look better and drive better. Not sure exactly what all that stuff at the front of the RV frame is, It looks like mostly a genset? Id take all that off the frame and ditch it or relocate it. Then all you really need to do is clearance where the engine is at the back which looks easy. If it were my project Id cut the whole belly of the jet off, set the truck frame basically just under the cabin floor(with some structural reinforcement obviously). Then make fairing panels out of the cut off belly that bolt to the side of the truck frame hiding the truck frame entirely. This would make it actually look like your drawing.
Good work guys, it's getting there👍
I’m impressed how those welds turned out! Well done.
I can't wait to see this thing driving down the road!!
Choices choices. In Europe - every custom-built vehicle goes through an extensive government road-safety check. Unqualified welder/welding on structural chassis members - no permit to use on the road. It's difficult to check weld integrity after welding, so WQP's (Weld Qual Proc's) are made using visual, NDT and destructive testing.

hi! big elvis fan here, i think it's great to see that his jet is finally being used. the only other ones he had are at graceland. very cool to see the stuff that isn't exhibited is out there and not just in some collection rotting away
Getting closer great job y'all take care be safe 🙏
I look at it you have to start somewhere keep it up
I just found myself in Jimmy's World again. It's gonna be a good weekend now😂
You should make a plexiglass display case for that landing gear. Mount the landing gear upright within the display. It would be an awesome showpiece for your home.
If you’re not happy with work, just close your eyes and everything will look fantastic.
1:20:30 "I'm blanking on the name...starts with a D, but you just twist down and turn...cam locks!" lol
In the seventies and eighties I flew into ABQ and ROW a lot and saw Elvis’s plane sitting there in ROW. There was also a great NASA JetStar sitting in ABQ with a wonderful back wall on the interior that displayed a Mercury Space Capsule on Re-entry. Wonder what happened to it.
Amazing. That was quite the job. I'd suggest mounting shock absorbers between the frame and the plane body to allow for any slight rolling that might otherwise wreck the whole thing.
That would multiply the annular roll coefficient by a factor of at least 3. 👎🏻
Jimmy, thank you so much for including our visit on your video! Glad to see progress being made, and I can't wait to return and help.
I think you have a kool idea
Dude you are kicking azz ! I didn't think you would pull it off and didn't see the vision until this video !!!! I am highly impressed and digging it !! Rock on my brotha 😎👍
