The Vampire Squid, a Living Fossil of the Abyss

  • The vampire squid is a peculiar creature, with its deep red colour, icy blue eyes, and webbed tentacles. Vampire squid are remarkably well-suited for a life at these depths. The isolated environment around it has changed little in 300 million years, meaning there has been no selection pressure to drive any large-scale natural selection in the species. For now, it is evolution’s near perfect solution to the harsh, unforgiving environment of the oceanic deep.
    The vampire squid dwells in the mesopelagic zone of the ocean. Here, there may be less than 5 percent oxygen saturation and little or no light. But while most cephalopods cannot survive below 50% oxygen saturation, the vampire squid has found ways of adapting to these conditions, with a slowed metabolism that causes it to require very little oxygen to survive. When feeding, it rarely actively swims, but prefers to drift on ocean currents. By using this efficient method, the squid uses very little energy, which it saves up for times when it faces danger. In such instances, it can move swiftly, using powerful jet propulsion while flapping its enlarged fins.

      You’re absolutely right. I’ve been looking into the role of the deep sea as a carbon sink for a possible carbon cycle video, and the benefit of some of these creatures that we so rarely see is mind-blowing. Without the oceans - without the mass movements of vertical migrators every day sequestering carbon and taking it down to the depth - human impacts would have decimated the natural world long ago. The deep sea is the biggest mitigator of our devastation, all thanks to creatures like the vampire squid.

    I like the video but I want to point out that the term "living fossil" is not used anymore since it's not true that animals don't change overtime, even tho they look identical to their extinct relatives, organisms change very much internally, look at coelacanth for example, people called it living fossil for decades but if you look back to his prehistoric relatives they are different both externally and internally

    • @NaturalWorldFacts
      @NaturalWorldFacts  Před 3 lety +27

      I’m aware of the dispute regarding the term, ‘living fossil’, and agree it isn’t scientifically valid. But it is still a perfect phrase for expressing how incredible the ancient morphologies of some creatures are. I’ll continue to use it as an expressive, emotive and metaphorical phrase, as many scientists also do. Thanks for raising this, though! It’s a very interesting discussion :)

    • @johnsober
      @johnsober Před 3 lety +2

      Living fossil is used to refer to organisms that have experienced some degree of (morphological) stasis. It's a more descriptive phrase. You chose the coelacanth to show how the term living fossil isn't really accurate but there are other species who have experienced even less physical change than the coelacanth. Also, it has always been weird to me that people point to the dna differences to invalidate the term when the term didn't really come from dna. It's simply we look at the species today, and we look at the fossil and even the paleoart and we think "oh wow, not much has changed, its a living fossil!". I understand that it was a term used by people who tried to debunk evolution, but beyond that, I never got why people had such a gripe with it. I mean, how else would you describe stuff like the vampire squid, the coelacanth, the lung fish, etc? If anything, I think it's convenient to have a phrase to quickly relay that this species has undergone relatively very little change. It's a neat little fact that's interesting. Unless of course there is already/another phrase that conveys an organism has experienced stasis?

    • @screaminbloodymurder
      @screaminbloodymurder Před 3 lety +1

      @@johnsober people usually have a gripe with it because its an incredibly inaccurate term and science tries to be as accurate as possible. Not sure what you mean by what would we call coelacanth, lunfish, etc. We'd call them coelacanth, lungfish, etc as we do now. I can see why living fossil is a fun term to hype people up and is certainly an attention grabber for a youtube video title, but it really shouldnt be used as much as it is without explanation

    These creatures are part of a family of cephalopods that were absolutely huge some 80 million years ago. Tusoteuthis was one such individual species. Reaching about 25-35 feet in length. Literally the Kraken once existed. It’s closest living relative is said to be the vampire squid. Which isn’t a true squid, but rather part of this ancient family that is closer to octopuses.

      Yep, the poor thing is definitely blind now (or more probably in something else's digestive system). It's cool to get more footage of the depths and learn more about the creatures there but it's sad that it so often comes at such costs... We just have to hope that the scientists know what they're doing and take care of causing as little damage as possible, I guess...

    An Anomalocarid, big or small. It's easy to say that animal care and other prehistoric creatures disappeared, but looking at the vampire squid, and the fact that we've only explored at least 5% of the ocean, there are so many mysteries within the deaths we have got to discover.
