Johnny was cool, i caught some of his shows. I liked his humor.
But my faves would be the early '80s Dave Letterman and Tom Snyder when he was on CBS (and used to have Robert Blake on as a guest - before the Bonnie Lee Blakely murder).

Johnny was the best late night host ever. The only one that came close to him was Steve Allen. Steve Allen had a whacky sense of humour, in some ways his improvisational skill was as good as Johnathan Winters and almost as good as Robin Williams.

Bullshit. He was trying to draw attention to himself because no matter what the situation or with whom, he has to be to center of attention.

Robin also had a 6th way which was unique to only a few of the greats and that the speed in which his mind worked leaving people in awe.

You've got that backwards. Jonathan Winters was always hilarious, and a lot of people didn't appreciate Robin Williams's weird humor. As a stand-up comic, Williams was funniest in the '70s, back when he was always coked-up. He kinda lost his touch without the coke, which Winters subtly references in this interview.

+John Mortimer I think if you took a poll right now, 99% of people will tell you they know who Robin Williams is/was and about the same percentage loved him. I highly doubt too many people can say the same about Jonathan Winters. Not that he wasn't funny, he was hilarious. But, he was very popular from the late 50s to the 80s. In today's times, a lot of people don't appreciate his humor because they simply don't know him.

That line from Carson was hilarious. Carson was great, he had an excellent late night show with almost no BS political commentary. He said he didn't believe in interjecting his political beliefs into his show. Something hosts could learn from today.

Just a tip. Both these amazing comedians suffer from terrible depressions. Winters used to have to check himself into hospitals to manage it. I'm sure there is more of a connection between these men than just comedic style. God Bless them both. Wonderful hearts. Maybe someday people will be able to discuss the illness of depression without shame or blame. It is a real serious, but treatable illness. Hopefully the stigma will be a little less with more enlightenment to society.

Comedy is the hardest thing to do in show business. Acting is child's play compared to comedy. In fact, I ask you all to think about this for a bit, there are few actors who can do comedy. But, to my knowledge, there has never been a comedian who could not act.

That's true. Back in the early 1960s there was a brief series, the name of which now eludes me, in which popular comedians like Milton Berle, Jerry Lewis, and so on, were given purely dramatic roles. I was stunned, especially by the episode in which Milton Berle played a man who lived alone and mistook poison for his heart pills. That's when I realized that drama is often behind comedy.
