    For $500, they could have given it a SAMOLED display, higher quality audio DAC and headphone AMP, a magnetically attachable analogue stick, a more powerful FPGA for the openFPGA platform, even for the normal Pocket unit, I honestly believe when something isn't 100% available, it may as well not exist at all, I love FPGA gaming, as it really does offer the same perfect input fidelity of real hardware, and perfect 1:1 parity compatibility, Windows and Linux OS environments are just too jittery with way too much input latency, USB latency, poor video & audio timings, difficult to get working with an RGB CRT display, and so on, the MiSTer offers reference quality video & audio for both analogue CRTs and modern digital displays, both real hardware and accurate emulated MIDI & synth audio options, 0ms input response SNAC controller support with real gamepads for any console of choice, so you can play N64 games with real N64 gamepad for example and enjoy the real mechanical optical 3D analogue stick that is the best way to enjoy N64 games, it is just a beautiful and elegant piece of hardware, and with the $99 MiSTer board coming out soon, will be really accessible for everyone, so everyone can enjoy perfect reference quality legacy computer, console and arcade games up to the 5th generation with perfect input fidelity and real controllers on CRTs and OLED displays.

    Never understood this trend with aluminum Gameboy shells and now Analogue Pockets. This is a device you hold in your bare hands to play, and stick in your pocket when not playing.
    Aluminum is heavy and gets cold to the touch in a chilly room. I've also seen anuminum shells, especially colored ones, get ugly dark or light scuff and gouge marks from a few years of use. My 25 year old Gameboy Color is made of lighter weight plastic, is durable enough to withstand a kid chucking it across the room, and is comfortable to hold in any temperature room. It's also gotten enough surface scratches and wear over the years, but still looks way better than an aluminum shell after half as much wear.
    Dishonorable mention to all GBA SP colorways and most DSi non-XL and New 3DS XL colorways though, for just how dang easily they scratch up and how ugly the scratches are since they're painted and the plastic under the paint is a different color. GBA SP or 3DS are still what I'm going to grab if I want to play a Gameboy or GBA game in 2024 though.

    US$60 shipping to my country for the Pocket Aluminium Edition - looks like Analogue may have stopped hiding some of the actual sticker price in the shipping (and handling) cost. The Megadrive and SNES Analogue devices would have cost me US$90 for shipping (and handling).
    I suspected that they were paying for the warehouse/handling in the shipping price, or they were being stupid on "picking absolute worst case for overseas shipping prices" for most countries as a whole, and just charging everyone that high end price.
    Looks like the non-Aluminium Pocket shipping price roughly a year ago was US$90 to a similar country to me (from a reddit post). Maybe they decided US$90 shipping for the US$500 Pocket was "a bit too much of an ask".
    Funny thing is I might have bought an Analogue Megadrive or SNES if they had priced it US$50 more for the RRP, and didn't charge as much for the shipping.

  • @K808G1
    @K808G1 Před měsícem

    Try adding on shipping. You're gonna hit close to $600. Trying to make extra money from "shipping" is sleazy. Priority mail is cheaper, faster, and trackable (at least anywhere in the US). Analogue Pocket is good, but Analogue is going to price themselves out just like Arcade 1-Up. It's going to be interesting to see which of these companies are still around in the next 10 years.

  • @GiSWiG

    My Analogue Pocket docked on my 4K TV plays better than any emulation device. It is much more responsive. If you want FPGA but don't need a handheld, check out Mister project and the soon to be released clone for much cheaper. (The clone is the same hardware minus the components Mister doesn't use). The Mister can also do Sega Saturn, PS1 and they are working on N64. Why buy Analogue's N64 clone that will only do N64 when the Mister can do N64 and any system before that. The same people are working on their own cheaper and just as powerful FPGA handheld as well.
