  • Looking into becoming a certified diabetes educator (CDE)? Let me be honest--becoming a CDE changed my life!
Recently, I had a conversation with one of the warmest, most honest dietitians I've ever met. He stated to me every time he gets a consult to educate patients who are recently diagnosed with diabetes he dreads it. I know exactly where he is coming from because I used to dread it as well.
Becoming a CDE gave me the understanding of glycemic agents, medications, micronutrient deficiencies associated with some of the medications, and different conditions (ex: lactic acidosis, ketoacidosis, balantitis to name a few). Though the study material taught me a lot being in the real world is an entirely different story. In today's video I share with you 4 real life experiences I've learned after becoming a CDE and how it has helped me become a better practitioner.

I’m not a RD or nurse but have worked for 25 years as a graduate level health educator, now working toward CDE.
I’ve learned that the client is the expert on their life and I am a supporter, offering tools to help them accomplish their health goals. We keep the info simple and specific.

Something I learned as a dietetic intern at an endocrinology clinic is that managing the condition can be very emotionally taxing for patients. Having diabetes is a daily challenge that can lead to feelings of hopelessness, frustration, and isolation. But a good educator/counselor can do what you mentioned - walk with them through the journey.

What? You haven't her of the Ketogenic diet? Go see Dr. Berg on utube. Get them off those dangerous drugs that don't heal and only support them and the healthcare INDUSTRY.

Hey Kim, I just wanted to say I love your content! It's really helpful information! I haven't been an RD for too long and I'm about to start working in an outpt facility with DM pts. How much involvement do you have as far as discussing medications with pts? Do you frequently or ever suggest adjustments in medications to the pts physician?
    Thank You

Namaste Ma'am, will I get a chance to just observe you when you educate the patient in real life? basically, I am asking for an observership under you . And I don't expect a certificate I just want to learn one on one from a very experienced professional.
I am so looking forward for a response from you.
    Thank you.
