  • The Necessity of Christ’s Death
    Part II
    Hebrews 9:23-28
    I. To Reconcile Our Account (v.23-26)
    A. The earthly vessels could be cleansed by animal sacrifices, but not the heavenly tabernacle (v.23).
    a. Christ did not enter an earthly sanctuary but heaven itself (v.24).
    b. Christ’s once for all time sacrifice effectively paid for sin - past, present, and future (v.25).
    1. Why Jesus’ sacrifice was sufficient and acceptable:
    • Because Sin requires Death, “For the wages of sin is death…” (Rom 6:23) Jesus was a perfect, sinless, substitute.
    • Because He had inherent value. Unlike animal sacrifices, Jesus is both God and man, he could offer up himself as a perfect, divine, sacrifice, equaling the value of God’s offended holiness.
    c. Christ’s death removed the sin barrier between God and man (v.26).
II. To Receive Our Advocate (v.27-28)
    A. As Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension was necessary, so is His judgment, be ready (v.27)
    B. Jesus’s return is certain so be expectant (v. 28).
    Point to Ponder:
Our salvation is secure which means the Lord’s return is certain. As such, believers need to be ready, and engaged in the tasks He left us to accomplish, that we may embrace Him fully at His return and receive our full reward.
