Did you know that California has one of the highest incidents of human trafficking in the U.S., with Alameda County being a central hub? The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office has been a community partner of We Run Oakland: For Our Children 5K Run/Walk for the past six years to bring awareness to and fight against this industry that puts millions of dollars in the hands of traffickers.
What is human trafficking? Human trafficking involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to control another person for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex acts or soliciting labor or services against that person’s will. Force, fraud, or coercion need not be present if the individual is under 18.
If you suspect someone you know is a victim of human trafficking, report it to your local law enforcement. You can also report it to the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888.
