    Soft Machine is one of the greatest UK avant/jazz-rock bands of all time. Their work, from their earliest performances as a psychedelic band, who were contemporaries of, and shared stages with Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, all the way to being one of Europe's best known 'fusion' bands has influenced several generations of bands, and continues to be name-checked by today's hip experimentalists.
    Hidden Details’, released in 2018, exactly 50 years since the release of the band’s 1968 debut album ‘The Soft Machine’.
    Whilst the line-up of Soft Machine may have changed many times since the heady days of the late 1960’s, the band’s spirit of musical adventure, and the ease with which it freely avoids being pigeon holed and can move from powerful progressive jazz fusion to atmospheric psychedelia to free improvised jazz-rock to ambient loop music continues to make it both unique and totally contemporary.
    Sinds 1999 is Marshall weer betrokken in de revival van de 'Canterbury-scene'.
    Hij draait mee in een aantal projecten rond het oude Soft Machine. Een eerste initiatief was SoftWhere, met onder meer Hugh Hopper, Elton Dean en Keith Tippett. De volgende samenstelling was met Allan Holdsworth, SoftWorks. Na een album werd er uitgebreid opgetreden. Nadat John Etheridge Holdsworth had vervangen, werd de naam gewijzigd in Soft Machine Legacy. Soft Machine Legacy trad regelmatig op, onder andere op 10 mei 2005 in Zaandam; van dit optreden werden opnamen gemaakt die op album uitgebracht werden. Met het overlijden van Elton Dean liep dit project ten einde.

    I've seen these guys live so many times in recent years from the days when they were called Soft Machine Legacy to now being just 'Soft Machine' again, they were some of the best shows i have ever been to and they really capture the old school classic sound of the 70s but embrace the modern aspects of today while still sounding very fresh. What can you say about these 4 gentlemen? John Etheridge is one of the greatest living guitarists of all time, John Marshall is still one of the top drummers, Roy Babbington remains one of the finest bass players and Theo Travis is one of the best all round sax players on the scene and can play so many different instruments. I can promise you now, it doesn't get any better than these guys and i can't wait to see them this Thursday when they come back to London.

    • @ProgLiveMusicProjeKcts
      @ProgLiveMusicProjeKcts  Před 5 lety +1

      Bassist Roy Babbington en drummer John Marshall were for the first time members of Soft machine on the album fifth (1972), Roy Babbington played as a guest (he was a guest bassist on the album fourt (1971) before) and John Marshall as a permanent member. With the album Seven, Roy Babbington also became a permanent member of the band.
      Not exactly 50 years but almost.

    • @borninparis
      @borninparis Před 5 lety

      4 years that made a big difference, when you think that Daevid Allen, Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt were founding members. And then you have Mike Ratledge who pretty much shaped what Soft Machine morphed into,from rock combo to avant-garde jazz, for the first 10 years. Apparently Mike didn't own the name.

    • @ProgLiveMusicProjeKcts
      @ProgLiveMusicProjeKcts  Před 5 lety +2

      Unfortunately, Kevin Ayers and Daevid Allen are no longer on earth and Robert Wyatt has been unable to perform for 30 years because he no longer dares. And unfortunately Mike Ratledge is no longer active in music. That makes it impossible to perform with the original members of soft machine.

    I remember their use of fuzz-tone organ. I understand that Hammonds are impractical. Too heavy. I do see the sax player playing a small keyboard occasionally.
    I wish they could have recruited Dave Stewart from Hatfield, Egg, Bruford, etc. Or any other keyboard player associated with Canterbury fusion.

    • @eyraudmarc6174
      @eyraudmarc6174 Před 5 lety

      Salut, désolé mais cela n'a rien à voir avec le band original surtout sans clavier et Marschal à toujours été lourd à coté de Robert . Ça fait pitié par moment...Il faut savoir arrêter ou peut être
      qu'i ne peuvent pas ?

    • @larrybeckham6652
      @larrybeckham6652 Před 5 lety +1

      Posh. Modern keyboards can have the sound and feel of Hammond perfectly and you lift them easy with one hand. I even seen band put a one these keyboards in a old Hammond case (showboat!). Especially if you gonna plug it in a Marshall amp like Mike Ratledge did.

    • @johntechwriter
      @johntechwriter Před 5 lety +1

      The Lowrey organ Ratledge played was nearly as heavy as a B3 and it sounded like crap. Ironically, I think its buzzy, reedy tone appealed to Ratledge, who was by far the most innovative jazz/rock organist of his time. And also, the Lowery had a lever on the volume pedal which enabled Ratledge to “bend” notes as a guitar player would.
