- Five OD pedals that step outside the norm. What do we think?
Life too short for long CZcams videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! In this episode Dan and I are playing through a handful of pedals that offer a different take on the ‘standard’ overdrive approach. Which is to say they all end up helping you to achieve an overdriven tone… but are a world away from the ubiquitous Tube Screamers, Blues Drivers and so on (love them as we do!)
As always we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel here, moreover offer up a palette of textures and tones that might help you get that bit more connected with your sound and playing.
Yes, there are many many other pedals also available. We chose these five today.
Enjoy the show!

That Pedal Show should be recognised by the British government as a essential public service and vital for the health and well being of guitarists and musicians around the world. 👍🎸🎼🦋🔥🙏
Hands up who thought this was * the * Josh Scott for a moment there!
@@tompoynton 👍😂
Ha! Thank you!
When we buy British food in Australia sometimes it has a little logo saying it’s supplied to the queen with the royal logo. Imagine having that on the TPS title card and the queen rocking a Tele and Tubescreamer as she watches the show
@@isaacandhismusic1153 😂😂😂👍
Thanks gents. Sometimes it’s more than the sound that makes a pedal desirable. I am going to get the Walrus Audio 385 not just because it sounds good (which it does) but because it reminds me of my dear departed dad. He used to sell Bell & Howell projectors for a while. And I have the fondest memories of hanging with him when I was little while he was showing cartoons in the classroom during school fairs. I was the proudest little fella in the school.
I found an old one on ebay for 100Aus pesos. Hoping to convert it into a 385 amp down the road. You pops would be proud mate 👍
this would be an awesome pedal for you to play thru Nate, that's a cool story
thanks djents
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed "Mick's New Strat" It was so well done. Thanks for sharing that, it really made my day on Tuesday!!
Yes! Any new Strat content from these guys is always a good thing.
Totally agree-that was brilliant
A beautiful guitar. And what Mick doesn't know about Strats isn't worth knowing.
Agreed but hope he keeps it stock It sounds great
that dreamcoat may have created the best overdrive sound I've ever heard on the show.
Mick, I’ve been watching the show for a few years now and it’s been great watching the journey. Last year (or maybe two years ago 😅) you started to take measures to better your mental health with exercise. You and I are alike in that I too struggled with similar things. I also took to exercise to help me battle the day to day demons. I’m so glad that you blogged about it and helped viewers both be more aware of what might be happening to a loved one around them, AND helped those of us who also struggle feel less alone. Today, I noticed. I noticed that your hard work has been paying off. You can see it in your face, arms, and midsection. I, however see it most of all in your demeanor, tone when you speak, and sincerity in your laugh. I’m here for the guitar stuff, but I’m also here for the journey that you’re on. Keep fighting the good fight brother, the rest of us are cheering you on. 🤙✌️🤟
Thanks so much John. and I'm glad to hear it's working for you too. I was just thinking this morning about physical and mental health. Nobody is surprised when they hear is somebody is actively working on their physical health - it's totally natural, right? But then we we say we're working on our mental health there is a completely different set of meanings attached to that. Like it's a big problem rather than just sensible maintenance. I'd love to see that change for more people, where actively doing things to maintain good mental health is just the same as going for a walk or putting oil in your car. Maybe one day! Thanks for the kind words and the very best to you!
I got a limited edition 385 a couple years back and it is a must for certain sounds on my board. Excellent episode. Greetings and salutations from Muscle Shoals Alabama hit recording capital of the world 🗺
For 'unique' OD's, I've really been loving the JHS Crayon with an AC15. That pedal is incredibly touch sensitive and go quickly go to a broken speaker sound depending on how hard you strum. It truly has its own character of OD
Just want to take a second to appreciate how good this show always looks and sounds, thank you!
Thank you kindly. We greatly appreciate that!
I really love this channel. A lovely balance of fun, mischief, knowledge and expertise. Please don't change!
I like the little bits running through what the pedal is supposed to be and do, great for putting you in the right frame of mind for hearing them!
That Intro has put me in the mood for more of That Pedal Show, nice work!!!!
I love this topic...I am exactly the guy your are talking about in this show. You did one of these a few years back which was where I discovered the Broadcast, which is the core of my whole sound now. Just wonderful stuff.
30:50 I love how Mick just casually switches Dan's pickup. Now that's teamwork.
Great playing in the intro, Dan! Killer tone
Congrats on all of the views. Schooling the masses with all of this outstanding content.
Nice group of pedals, great tones, great playing, great information. The Walrus Audio 385 and the CTC Memphis V resonated with me. Thanks Leg Ends!
Wet/dry setup... SSO and Memphis V... My, oh, my. What a glorious sound. A great conclusion to a fantastic show.
Great work as ever, and congratulations on all those minutes!
What a great episode!! So happy to see Catalinbread getting some love! Both of your playing on the Dream Coat was epic!! I don't think Catalinbread generally gets the love that maybe they should. Everyone seems to focus on their delay pedals and look elsewhere for dirt. I've had a Dirty Little Secret on my board for about 12 years. I used it more liken overdrive and stack. That, and my RYRA Klone are the only two mainstays on my board. This was an eye opener to a couple of really great pedals that I wasn't familiar with today as well!!! Thanks Gents
TPS talking about overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedals is my happy place. Cheers!.
Hello, chaps. Very good, interesting , programme today. That's another 3 of these pedals sold and very useful too! Thanks also for the USA, That Pedal Shop. Best, Pete.
Great show this week. love the Small Speaker Overdrive and very interested in the Memphis. Wow!
Great show, thank you. Congrats on all the big numbers.
Some great tones as per usual guys!
Great playing on this. Love you guys
I loved this episode. Every single one of these pedals is now on my list. Thanks a lot, fellas 😳
Awesome vibes today, too. I was feeling it, too. Thanks again 🙏
A billion minutes! I'm glad to have made a significant contribution to that. Keep it coming!
I kick a few hours into the pot pretty regularly myself. Olden days ones, and some episodes are just repeaters.
Great show. Love seeing Dan with the Nik Huber guitar. I have been loving mine recently and I want to try it with a couple of these pedals!
That last bit with the w/d Memphis is superb! That with delay, reverb, would make a great small board without anything else. Love it.
1 hour of yet another exciting ODs. Time to prepare hot beverage and relax into weekend.
thanks for all you guys do as always :)
Great show today guys, Thanks!
Fantastic episode, all of those pedals had their own sounds, all different but all superb 😄
This was one exciting show! I have a clone of a KOT (overdrive and boost) and OCD as an additional stage and I still can’t get near the tones you both got from the SSOD and the Dreamcoat especially. I shared your excitement. Well done, brothers.
That SSO sounds great I gotta say. And the 385 kind of reminds me of a Deluxe cranked and plays really well with the Deluxe!
The Memphis sounds lovely.
Great show again guys!!
Yes! The Small Speaker Overdrive! I've been hoping that would pop up on the TPS radar!
Bell and Howell is it! You two are both looking great. Fit and stylish -- Just like the guitar sounds! You guys have really changed my mind about compression and how to get a good sound... and now I have big loud amps for the neighbors to hear!
Another enjoyably informative video - many thanks!
Great show guys - that Memphis V sounds really good! My 10 month old is wearing his TPS onesie for the first time today. Told him it was "because tone" and he seemed to understand. Not sure the nursery will...
Wow Dan! That intro was spy movie cool!!! You guys never cease to amaze!!!
Great video! I got the Memphis a couple of weeks back and I love it. The Catalinbread Valcoder also has a fantastic pre-amp.
Weeeeeee!! Only just started watching and got the first shot of the board and I can’t say how happy I am that this video features the Walrus Audio 385!! Great shout gents!! 😍😍😍😍🥰
That Great Eastern FX sounds absolutely banging!I really dig it.
Great show, love the outside the box stuff.
It's alot of minutes, because it's a Great Show ( tangents and all ). Always interesting & informative.
Another great episode.
Never used to pay much attention to Catalinbread but lately I’ve actually realised just how many quality great sounding effects they make.
Less than a minute in and feeling better already - might need to start the weekend early - Thanks chaps.
The Small Speaker overdrive is absolutely amazing. Love this pedal.. already on my list of next purchases
Ya it sounds so great !! On my list too
Thank you!! I needed to hear some new stuff. I am to the point where I’ve taken overdrives off my board altogether. I’ve been using a fuzz and I turn the volume down on the guitar for the “overdrive”.
So nice to see "not a Tube Screamer". You guys are making the world a better place, one pedal at a time.
Blinkin' loved this chaps, thank you. Some mega tones from start to finish. Great to see the East of England represented as well.
Fantastic, dudes! I have the CTC Falcon ('55 & '61 tweed in a box) overdrive and it is AMAZING; great episode
Really wonderful show, guys. I want to buy all those pedals now. The small amp one might be my fav.
Ive been a squeaky clean player for over 10 years now, never really used any dirt at all besides when i was a young teenager discovering electric guitar for the first time, but lately ive really been getting into dirt sounds, and im finally ready to put an array of gain onto my board. I love the interesting choices u guys have picked for this video. Definitely going to check some of these out some more.
Great opening Dan 👏👏
I can never get enough of my 68 champ tone, it always surprises everyone that hears it for the first time. It's just a magnificent tone machine!
Cheers guys, really enjoyable episode, loved a lot of those tones. Not usually a fan of abused audio equipment distortion but the Dreamcoat hit the spot today, absolute filth. :)
Nice! "Pick 'n Mix / Pedal Jams" is back! Great one guys.
Thanks so much D&M! Great show. Waiting for a show with overdrives that are transistor and not opamp types for a different type of sound.
10 seconds in and I already know this is gonna be a good video!
The best guitar show in entire world, congratulations for you guys, awesome tone and playing. I may watched every single show since I discovery your Channel. I would like to see some show talking about 1000 dollars pedalboard it would be awesome.
Always makes for rad episode when Dan gets lost in the tone and starts to connect with the gear. Some truly inspired playing 🙏
Really love that Small Speaker pedal😃 Really does seem to get that tight focused immediate sound you get from an 8”-10” kind of speaker🔊 It immediately reminded me of my 1965 VibroChamp in cleaner edge of breakup settings, then when you cranked it got very tweedy, excellent! Might have to check that out👍 Loved aspects of the other pedals too, all very interesting and a little different
Wow! A TPS where I own 1/2 of the pedalboard! (385, Memphis, Collider). All ace. Thanks guys.
Wow. MIck plus the Catalinbread - Bee's knees. Best I've heard.....Kudos! Great playing Mick. And nice gold strat.
Great show. I never get enough of overdrive pedals. The number of them I need is the number I currently have plus one.
Just like guitars!
Waiting for the ‘new strat pickups’ episode for the gold strat. Think that thing is gonna come alive!
I burst out laughing and cheering when Mic started turning them all on at the end of the intro. Reminded me of many videos from the past where you closed out the show doing that.
When I see a show about overdrives on tps my day just turns into a day of fun looking for more overdrives!!
Mick - I recently got a Gibson Custom 57 Les Paul Goldtop reissue and love it! I was drooling over the one you’ve got for so long, had to finally go ahead and get one for myself :)
Great playing on Dan
I feel like there is just a ton of crossover in types of distortion and end up going for what you guys termed "Adult". It's almost a tone derived more from what I don't want, than what I want. Thanks for all the helpful information you have uncovered on your journey, it's been insightful. So many ways to skin this cat.
Absolutely love this one. It reminds me of the first album I really connected to as a kid - New Way to be Human by Switchfoot, produced by Charlie Peacock in the late ‘90s. It had a lot of unusual, maybe even “bad”, guitar sounds used in an incredibly musical way.
I probably spend way too much time chasing some mythical ideal of a rock guitar tone, when I could be making really interesting music instead. Well done. Keep it up!
Switchfoot is my favorite band of all time!!!!!
I just ordered a JHS Morning Glory V4 with foot switch. I should get it today. But the last two episodes have been based around pedals I have ordered lol. I just got in my Vibe Machine V2 it’s absolutely phenomenal. I watched your video on it and I had to have one. I couldn’t justify the Gypsy Vibe. I almost ended up gettin the the Jam as well. I compared so many videos and reviews. I could not make up my mind which one I wanted. I tried as many pedals that were at my local shops. I could not make up my mind I looked really heard at the V3 as well I just couldn’t figure it out. I caught a guy that had the V2 for sale with switch and all the fixings. At a really good price. It looks brand new. It is my introduction to the Uni-Vibe. I played the JHS Uni-Corn and it was very nice I think any of them are good. I just got the one that vibes with me the most and was the most pedal board friendly pedal. I think a close second place was the Jam Vibe if you want a really bright and clean Uni-Vibe that is a great Uni-Vibe. The Gypsy Vibe is to accurate for my test. Way to dark. The original is dark very dark. Some people may not agree. There are so many great pedals find one and roll with it. I don’t think anyone will ever disappointed with any of the pedals I have mentioned.
Gee thanks. Now I have to have the Rift EL34.....ordered and going into February's acquisition disclosure form for TPS residents. Great show boys
Awesome Mick and Dan you guys are awesome Guitarists.
Great episode Mick and Dan!!
The Catalinbread Dream Coat does a really good job at reproducing some of the characteristics of the old R2R Aiwa used by Ritchie.
To have an idea of this debauchery of “hooliganery” , take a listen at Deep Purple’s Knocking At Your Back Door solo (Perfect Strangers), it’s amazing in the right context.
Love watching the show, keep of jamming ;)
So impressed at the acting quality for the intro.
The Small Speaker Overdrive caught my ear and sounded fantastic on both guitars (even on CZcams). I could tell by the look on your faces that you thought so to. Tried to order it and it was out of stock. Sound Shoppe NYC emailed me this morning and it's back in stock so I ordered it and it's on the way!
Thanks for this great episode guys! Instant G.A.S. for that Great Eastern Small Speaker Overdrive. I'd be surprised if that doesn't end up on Mick's or/and Dan's boards. It's THE tone sought after IMO. I'm very close to hit the buy button on that one. Cheers, Thor
Awesome Show as always!! Thanks so much guys. I did notice that the gold Strat is giving a scrinch more fret buzz from when you first played it. Doesn't bother me but I did notice. What a delight that thing is anyways!
Yah, it's in the middle of getting to where I want it, set up wise. Finally did some work on it this weekend just gone and it's playing much nicer now!
D&M, in answering your thumbnail question, here is a resounding “NO!” Having said that, the combination of Small Speaker OD and Memphis sounded wonderful over the interwebs. Great show and sounds. Cheers.
Lovely intro Dan 👌
I picked up a FTT Crunchy Chime Booster pedal a few weeks back and I'm really diggin it. it does some nice stuff with the high harmonics and has great EQ control.
Great show.
It's always a good time to appreciate Dan's fedora game 💯🔥
I do love how the best overdrive is a tremolo.
Legitimately that tone at the end with the small speaker, Memphis V & the Collider is a Fuzz away from rig perfection for me. Magnatone & a Champ in a wet/dry... 🤔.
Unorthodox drive sources are fun. Saw a Boss micro rack parametric eq for cheap on local listings and decided to try it. It looks like a christmas tree and it can drive itself to crunch, so I ended up getting a really interesting sounding booster/drive "pedal" that is also conveniently tweakable for shaping or where you want the peak.
i especially appreciate Dan's playing on an Overdrive/Distortion ep. i like to hear how the pedal/rig/chord articulation sounds when he goes for the slightly more "expensive" chords in the lower registers. that's kinda where i live.
That Memphis is to my ears the perfect vibe/trem/vibrato sound I've heard on the show. Sold! 👌🤘
Dreamcoat was my favorite by far. But the 385 sounded good too, more manageable perhaps. Dreamcoat got all the custom goodies for shaping, including internal frequency adjustment but one little knob bump and it could get way crazy real fast. I got a thing for tape preamp pedals lately, I'm wanting one. So I loved the choices today, good stuff, great picking and tones.
More overdrive!!! Right in my wheelhouse!
Edit to add: it’s impossible for me to watch this show without a guitar on my lap. I think you’d call that inspiration?
Really want your guys thoughts on the Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop. Best break-up on a pedal I've ever heard! Heard a lot too thanks to you guys and bought even more! Thanks for the show and fighting the good fight!
Nice to hear you mention Neil Grimes...a great guy to deal with and my two NRG treble boosters are irreplaceable
This has me with a BIG smile 5 really cool pedals and only 1 readily available. The Catlinbred. 1 EL34 on Reverb. Can't find a Small Speaker anywhere and they're not listed on "your" site, which you pushed at the beginning. I'm still watching and still subscribed because your vids are great. I really liked the GEE and the CTC. Cool vid!
God damn, that intro was so soulful. Love it!
Interesting video, I could envisage giving that Dreamcoat a home! I'm re-evaluating all my pedals, not because I'm bored of how they sounded per say, but I did come to the conclusion a while back that I needed a new and different sounding amp, which, once obtained, led to the realisation that some pedals that used to work, no longer do, so some new pedals are needed! And then there is the power supply, everything is now going into the front so I don't think my daisy chained power supply will cut it any longer!
I can hear Billy Gibbons playing that Small Speaker OD pedal! WOW!
Walrus 385 is still one of my favorite drives ever. Not for everything, but real close
I have one and love it. What do you use yours for or how do you like to use it?
I have a 385 and it is one of Walrus Audios most overlooked underrated pedals. In my opinion anyway. Another great show chaps.
Have had mine for 4 years, its my favorite "clean" tone shaping pedal. I use it like a preamp for my board and it works excellent with my fuzz face. Volume on 2 o'clock, gain on 10-11ish, bass on 11, treble on 2 with a Jazzmaster into a Deluxe.
