Best Of the Best Dual Overdrive Pedals? [KOT, Gladio, Duellist, Protein] That Pedal Show

- Welcome!
Here we go then - our first ever fully live 'normal' TPS episode.
Why are we doing this? Erm, truthfully because we've run out of edit windows this week, so it's either this or no show.
On a more positive note, we're big believers that from adversity comes opportunity. We REALLY want to do more live stuff, so let's do it.
PLEASE NOTE:
There will be NO SUPERCHAT and NO LIVE QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS - we just can't keep on top of them. It's just a straight TPS episode, but done live instead of recorded and edited.
Thanks for being with us!
CLARIFICATION ON THE BROWNE AMPLIFICATION PROTEIN DUAL
Erm, I say in the video (Mick here) that this is inspired by a Nobels ODR-1 on the green side (correct) and a Boss BD-2 Blues Driver on the blue side (not correct). It's actually a Marshall Bluesbreaker.
Seems that everyone is confused, because's Browne's site mentions the 'Blue pedal used by John Mayer during Continuum'. Mr Mayer definitely had a Boss BD-2 at that time, and it's blue.
He also had a Marshall Bluesbreaker apparently... which is black.
Please forgive the confusion! Either way, the nice people at Browne got in touch and confirmed it is inspired by an original Marshall Bluesbreaker.

You saved me 15min. Thx!
I see Dan dressed up as Tim Peirce for Halloween.
Hey yeah absolutely lol!
I thought the same thing. 😆
Jep the resemblance is striking!🤣
Without the mad grinning as he plays.
I must be old. I was thinking Rick Nielsen.
Thanks guy for having the Gladio being featured here, I feel so honored to know you like it.
Btw, my name is Emilio... But I kinda like Claudio as well, both names share the Roman origin 😉😉
Beautiful work.
@@CorbCorbin thanks 😉
Great pedal! Every time I hear one I want one even more.
@@davedavem thank you so much Dave! 😊 I appreciate it
Dude, hands down the winner for me. Sounds incredible and crazy versatile. Can imagine tweaking that for hours and hours.
Exceptional quality for a live stream. Thanks for all you guys do!
I can listen to you two jam for hours while I work! You guys are unbelievable!
The level of ambience at the beginning was EPIC! Great stuff Mick! I love that Strat.
Dan, your Tele is by far the best I've ever heard for ages ! (That's what I think every time I watch one of your videos, it had to be said !)
I always love coming back to this video to be able to hear these glorious tones. I think its my most watched TPS video. U guys have fantastic guitars going through the "best of the best" overdrives (obviously objective. Lol) into my dream delay, then finally into my dream amps. Just sounds phenomenal!!
I'm very grateful to own all of these and they are all amazing by every standard. Great job on the video guys, thanks! No way I could possibly pick a favorite.
Maybe my favorite episode ever ...well done, lads. Really takes the edge off in these weird times to be able to nerd out with y'all.
Great episode! Your delay episode of last week followed by this amazing duel overdrive, well, absolute perfection! Thank you so much for all of the great content. By the way, I love my Protein!
Dan was right about the KOT, in a real band mix, you guitar will just sit right where it should be. Its a unique pedal in that it retains the character of your guitar and amp and just adds something special to it
Love the little window showing you guys playing while the pedal board cam is on..... well done on the show..... watching on a Saturday still feels as professional as usual... as for the sounds, playing and tones.... epic as always!
Man, hats off to the entire TPS team with this episode! If you guys hadn’t told me it was live I would have had no idea. The transitions, the audio, and the PLAYING, my goodness. Well done to all of you.
Really enjoyed your live show today. Pre-recorded might be smoother, but the chemistry between you two shines a lot more when you're live!
I think it says a lot about the talents of everyone involved in TPS that watching this seven hours after the fact I didn't notice a difference in quality of playing, rhythm of conversation or editing or anything, really, from a 'normal' show. Well done, all.
Mick - playing everybody’s guitar but his own 😂 nothing but love. 👍
42 minutes in, Mick is feeling it!! One more.. lol. It's great to see a prime example of the inspiration a pedal can bring a human musician, that's what it's all about Mate!
I cannot wait to finally see the fruit of all your work and be able to hear all those tones in context when you'll (be able to)get Doug, a bassist etc in the shed!
Got the new 2022 version of the Duellist, with the six external dipswitches and another switch to change the order of the channels. In this configuration, plus the Fat/Stock/Glass switches, it's versatility is astounding. Sold a bunch of OD pedals after getting it because I could replicate their sound with the Duellist. Can't get enough of it!
Really, fellas! That was the best hour of live geek nerdy goodness I’ve been treated to in a long time. Color me Gladio...or KOT...or...color me all!
Amazing show guys, what a great line-up of pedals. I'm eagerly awaiting my KoT slot, probably only a couple of years to wait now, ha ha.
Hands down, mainly a Fender Strat player. After your great demo of the Duellist, just ordered one today. Gladio would be my second personal choice. Another very impressive O.D. pedal!
Great demo, playing from the both of you...reviewing all four "top Tier" overdrive pedals. Cheers to your lovely channel! Subscribed.
Can't believe I missed this live. Early for PST. Beautiful tones. Nimble audio assistance. Picture in picture during Pedal Cam worked well. Great fun and well done. Ordered Dan's cap and Neville's cd. Cheers, boys.
Every one of these pedals sound great, but one stood out to me. I was multi-tasking while watching this, and every time I had to check what pedal was making that glorious sound, it was the protein.
NICE WORK everyone involved in this live TPS show!
I can only imagine how much effort has gone into making this happen so smoothly.
Quality.
🤘😻😼👍
Agree - they are the Best = phenomenal job all-the-way around.
Amazing show! Loved the “live vibe”, you guys rock!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Mick, that intro was next level. Tone was out of the ballpark, playing was stellar, I’m jealous af I can only imagine what it was like in person!
Thanks! It’s awesome when we have the amps and the volume. Nothing like it!
Not click bait
Love this you read my mind w this one
Actually helping w g.a.s. Because no matter what you chaps play it’s always glorious
I feel like we are family and I appreciate your humility whilst blowing my mind 😎
Killer show as always gents, thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the Picture in Picture of you guys while on Pedal cam was a fantastic editorial touch 👌
This is an EXCELLENT video!!! 🔥
I purchased all these pedals, one at a time, because of this video and all 4 pedals sound terrific in my setup.
I just had gotten into pedals and own a Wampler Gearbox, Dual-Fusion, and a Freidman BE-OD (dual pedal) and luv’n all, but these 4 pedals are really something special.
Iplay ‘em all through either a Marshall 2204 and my Ceriatone OTS 20 (FANTASTIC AMP) They all sound amazing through these 2 amps and can’t find a bad sound in any of ‘em!
Fantastic video! Thanks guys! 🔥✌🏼
All are lovely indeed! KOT user for years but that Protein sounds beautiful as well!
Just been playing my brand new KOT for the first hour and it was worth the 4 year wait. Everything Dan says. Everything on, gain at 90%, turn up for lead, dial down volume to 3 for rhythm/clean. So dynamic.
Really nice episode, somehow the mood was different live despite not interacting with the chat. To be honest I like it that way so you can focus on the topic at hand. Shoutouts to how smooth and produced it was even in a live setting, totally didn't expect all the smooth camera changes and whatnot.
Mick must be poking himself mad thinking about all the possible mistakes that happen when doing things live, but it was great, no need to second guess this episode. I was kinda hoping unedited live show would mean more sidetracking without control, but unfortunately we barely got any sidetracks at all. Dan's jacket was awesome btw, great outfit today.
Yeah, this is pretty much exactly as it happens when we film normally - nobody believes us! :0)
9 times out of 10, your shows make me pick up my guitar. Your playing and tone are viscerally inspiring.
FWIW, the both of you are probably my favorite guitarists to listen to just noodling around. (I assume it's noodling around.) I think the reason I like hearing someone who is so proficient just noodling around is that without any backing chords, I think my subconscious adds in the chords in such a way that really compliments your playing. The extended notes and accidentals that you play fit in to some progression in my mind's ear that may or may not be the progression that in going through your heads, but it's so very often meltingly beautiful.
Ooooh, interesting. More often than not, I’m playing diatonically around a key centre so those changes are absolutely set down in western pop music since the late 1950s. That’s why they seem so obvious. Dan has a more complex approach to key changes and extended harmony so I can only imagine what you’re hearing there! :0)
The protein and the gladio! I want a protein. There is a no talking Browne protein demo on youtube that is just a guy ripping blues rock that is flippen GLORIOUS! Nice job as always from a TPS lifer.
Thanks for choosing those pedals, plenty of us are trying to make decisions 👍
Dudes! Awesome live show! Thanks for the name check as ever. Catch up sooooon 🤓
Mick in such a good mood, focussed and confident also in his playing.
I'm loving the Wampler Dual Fusion right now... that said the KoT never leaves my board except when I don't have the space. Love the live format, you should do this once a month.
Man you're noodling in this one is next level. Mick blistering stuff with Les Paul into the protein. I'm liking that pedal
Brilliant job with this episode guys.
I've got two duals on my board. The Coppersound Foxcatcher which I absolutely adore, and the Amp11 which I also love but probably cooled on a bit recently. Now experimenting with amp-like drives. The fantastic JHS Superbolt and newly-acquired Crazy Tube Circuits Killer V. I blame my pedal addiction on you chaps, by the way.
Way to go Dan! Really like how you handled the "tremendous amount" of gain! Feel like your playing has been really improving!
KOT honorable mention as the “you can never go wrong” addition to your board.
Oooh picture in picture now? Fancy :P Caught this late because of work, but having caught up I now realise that I need at least two of these pedals in my life ^_^ great show as always guys
This channel is quite possibly the greatest thing on CZcams and I will even say possibly the greatest thing in existence in the universe.
Hahahaha! Thank you!
Safe to say that we're going to be out $500 at the very least after this video lol. Another good one Mick and Dan! The protein sounds so good!! And the KoT of course is a legend at this point.
I still love the Wampler Dual Fusion. When you work it together with a good Fuzz and a light boost, you can get any sound and feel you can think of. But man...the Duellist 😍
Listening (without watching), the Protein really made my ears perk up. At least on YT, the immediateness and clarity are terrific.
At 1:00hr Dan got into Galactic Melodic Mode. The Protein sounded like a super pedal with a decay sweetnes only matched by the King of Tone low gain setting. All pedal sounded like champions. Great episode.
Smoother than a greased lothario. Amazing effort from the whole TPS team. Everything sounded awesome today. Dan, I want that Gretsch. Mick, Blue is _never_ the wrong Strat.
I love the Gladio! I use Ch 1 (Left) gain at 9 O'Clock as my "clean" sound w/Tone at Noon. That feeds the other channel nicely.
They all sound great, but more importantly all four of those pedals LOOK cool as heck 😎😉
Had a King of Tone in 2010 - stupidly sold it a few years later! (On the list for a new one over 3 years now). But, I just got the Duellist, and love it! The Protein was surprisingly good! Great video, guys!
Great episode guys. Would also be worth to check the Jam Pedals Double Dreamer. Excellent dual drive with great versaitility
Duellist with Mick's Paul was amazing. I have the TC Nova Drive and really like it. Slips under most people's radar, very overlooked pedal. You can stack the sides in either order or run them in parallel, and store 18 presets.
This was one of my favorite "pedal comparison" videos from "That pedal show !
D&M,
Great live show, well done!! It was also great to hear these wonderful ODs with such lush delay and reverb. Since completing my wet/dry rig, I’m surprised at the amount of delay and reverb I have been dialing in. A little spring reverb on the dry side and a whole lot of modulated delay and reverb on the wet side. Sonic bliss! Because Tone….Because of you guys!
Cheers!
Totally, it can be sooooo much deeper and verby and delay-y when there’s a dry signal present. Mmmmmmm
Wasn’t able to watch live earlier as I was working, but I now have a frosty beer in hand and am 90 seconds in with glorious tones already washing over me. This should be a good ‘un!
Cheers!
The dualist is pure SRV in a box. Just sounds awesome through my DR Z Maz. Once you’ve spent all day blending and flicking switches you can actually start enjoying it once you’ve found your tone. Worth every penny.
Are you talking about the internal switches
You guys never stop inspiring me!! I don’t have a lot of money and I can’t work but you always make you feel like I can do anything if I put my mind to it!! Thank you guys!! TPS has helped me through some very dark times for me with my mental health!! For that I will forever be thankful!! I’m sorry I can’t support the show by buying stuff yet but I’m saving for a D&M drive and I just wanted to ask Mick, I have a Stratocaster from the 90’s that I think is a Squier but the previous owner reshaped the guitar and headstock but the bridge will not go flat to the body no matter what I do, I have got it as flat as it will go but I just don’t want to mod it due to it being my first guitar that I got 16 years ago when I was 10.. but what could I do to get the Trem to go flush to the body and stop the fret buzz on the frets past 14?? (which I barely play on) thank you for everything you have done for me and inspired me to do!! You are heroes
So much fun. What great pedals. I own the D&M but would gladly add any of these four!
The King of Tone with the Strat and reverb and delay was just epic tone.
One of the most inspiring episodes. I am into pedals for quite a long time now. I never stacked pedals. Always one for one sound. This episode made me run to my music room and stack TS into bluesbreaker style and odr into bd2. Thank you. Greetings from Slovenia.
YES!
Cool show! Top work as usual! I love the Van Weelden Royal OD with a G2D Cream Tone. 🎸
Goodness! That’s a sound!
Great playing guys! That Protein sounds amazing!!!
Man, I love the brown amplification pedal! Dan, I swear, red sounds better every time I hear her!
Some people complaining about quality drop while live..... this is the best livestream I’ve seen. Obviously a few frames drop but the sound quality is all there, the camera angles and lighting is all there. Few understand what goes into a livestream. It was super cool waking up and knowing we’re all appreciating these pedals and tones at the same time. Y’all are pioneers in this space, keep doing you!!! We’re all here for it!
Thank you! Yeah, there’s not much we can do about a few dropped frames. Amazing this is possible at all!
I agree. Sound was excellent, and the cuts were very well done.
Besides all the great tone from your playing of these 4 dual overdrives, the star of the show was the backup! That Free The Tone Future Factory is the sweetest warmest coolest sounding delay I've ever heard featured on your show! My wallet, 15 minutes after the show ended, was seriously depleted!
Free The Tone Future Factory sounds like Magic. More so than most.
I started watching and following TPS 3 or 4 years ago, can't remember for sure. I have always watched and listened to the show on high quality studio gear/monitors and HD TV. At first and for a long time, I had a difficult time hearing the nuances between similar pedals. Hell, I often had trouble hearing the difference between a fuzz and an overdrive! Thanks to Dan, Mick and the entire TPS staff and guests over those years, I have learned and trained my old, tired, amateur ears. I really appreciate today's show for the subtleties, not just for the humor and good music.
Love my Gladio - my favourite OD pedal in 30 years.
Never heard of it but it sounds great. Maybe have to it on my list
It continues to impress in demos & TPS. I've never played one (Jetter serves my Dumblish needs atm) - but it seems so unique. As a clean boost, it seems to embiggen the tone.
"Embiggen" is a real word because of The Simpsons.
@@mattgilbert7347
Seen many a fish, hmbut that’s a...embiggen.
Have you tried it with a non-tube amp? If so, does it lose major mojo?
@@Paul-dw2cl ahhhh its in this video
I got the Protein a few months ago and think it’s incredible! These pedals all sounded great!
New TPS episode and new pedal arriving today (Boss OC-5) are the two main things I've looked forward to this week :)
Superb episode gentlemen! Well done!
Mick, John Mayer's Blues Driver on Continuum was indeed mod'd and mod'd by no other than our good friend Robert 🙂but the Protein pedals' blue side' though is based on the original "BluesBreaker" circuit but it has been modified a bit & also has an additional output section to add clarity, output and a little compression
Aha, thank you BV!
i never had more fun with any pedal than with the protein. it's a very, very special pedal!
They all are so different yet similar in some ways. I'm sure each one could be considered the "best" in a certain situation. That said, the Gladio might be the coolest sounding overdrive I've ever heard on your channel. There's just something about it.
Dear Mick. Hey mate. Just wanna day I so thrilled you guys finally tried the Protein. My fave OD by far. You should also check out the T4 fuzz. Absolutely incredible as well. One thing to address. The blue side is actually not a BD2 but a Bluesbreaker inspired circuit. Mr Browne just confirmed this with me.
I can’t decide if I should feel proud, or slightly ashamed that I own all of these drives (except the protein)....and that they were all inspired by watching your show for years. Great shootout.
Woah!
Some of my favs: EQD Palisades, Xotic BB+, JHD Double Barrel, and JHS Sweet Tea.
Love the PIP on the Pedal cam shot , very cool . Dan ,Red sounds Amazing . I know you know this .....Dan>Red>KOT> That's the sound I'm after.
Great show! I thought all the pedals sounded great.....in context. Context as it relates to guitar tone is practically continuously variable. Pickups, guitars, strings, picks, hands, rooms, speakers, amps, gain, etc.....all makeup the context that creates tone. Now add in the variables introduced by capturing the sound with recording equipment and then streaming the digitally converted audio around the world via the internet only to be listened to by a vast variety and quality of playback equipment that includes Digital to Analog converters, amplifiers and headphones/speakers (and the room acoustics the speakers are in) and it becomes very clear to me what a great job you guys do of bringing us such a great quality and consistent production week in and week out. And you fund this all on the honor system. Since there were no Super Chats I bought a baseball cap. I love the show and appreciate all the hard work. Sorry for being so wordy, I could have stopped at Great Show!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!!
No arguments here. I guess the only thing we can do is sim for some consistency week to week. Thank you for buying stuff as always - much appreciated!
24:20 Tee shirt idea for Mick: "It's always 2 o'clock somewhere"
The Truetone VS-XO is a really underrated dual OD in my humble opinion. I never see anyone talk about it and I get the best overdrive sounds I ever had out of it.
Great episode as always, gents. Cheers :)
Absolutely. It's phenomenal
@@mattgilbert7347 great minds think alike, mate. So many great, different tones out of it.
@@FarewellApollo haha cheers mate. The Wampler Paisley Deluxe is comparable to the VS-XO. I like them both. A Nobels ODR-type and a heavily modified TS.
The VS-XO has that clean blend which is so useful when stacking another drive pedal or Fuzz into the right side
@@mattgilbert7347 Oh yeah, that clean blend is a fantastic addition. One of the things that sold me on it originally. Also the clipping and bass switches is such a cool idea and opens up even more tweak-ability options.
That's awesome. I haven't tried the Wampler before, I'll definitely have to check it out. What kind of sounds/tweakability does it offer that's different from the VS-XO?
Wow! Great show!
The Tight Drive Pro by Amptweaker is the dual overdrive I absolutely love.
Live episode, worked like a charm!
I can see a pattern here.
Watched TPS -> bought BK Butler Tube Driver.
Watched TPS -> bought Marshall Bluesdriver
Watched TPS -> bought Boss RE-20 Space Echo
...
Fortunately I already have a couple of awesome single >and< dual overdrives to accommodate my addiction. Mainly the Xotic BB Plus, which is so very versatile!
...
Famous last words... :oD
Oops! Thanks for being with us Ramsey!
Can I just say thank you for running humbuckers through all of these. I know you guys don’t never use them but being bucker exclusive myself, I sometimes feel not part of the club
Hbs rule when it comes to getting gain.
Owned two KoTs and one SunLion. Now I’m boosting a OD-3 with a SD-1w. Great sounds.
Update 4 months later: I’m back with my old KoT again :)
I must say when my name came up on the KOT list, I got excited to make a few hundred bucks, but it stands as one of the greats for me. Hands down THE best drive I've had the privilege to play, let alone own.
and once again brilliantly & 'funly' done mates ! ...a lil 'protein' in one's daily sustenance is always a good thing , but the KOT is ........King for me :)
@That Pedal Show: Oh Daniel, Daniel, Daniel, your Les Paul is absolutely magnificent. As is your playing.
Thanks Tim, lemony Snickers was well jealous, but you’ve just made it all ok 🤓🙏🙏
I love my Gladio, they don't mention in their marketing that when you stack both sides together, you get a Warren Haynes / high gain Soldano sound. It really is just an amazing pedal.
I had the Deulist, didn't like the clean side. I tried the KOT (used at Guitar Center, of all places!) and it was too mid-humpy for me. So, after watching this I bought the Protein on a whim and all I can say is "WOW!" Both channels are great, and they are even better together. I can sum this pedal up in one word: JUICY!!!
Amazing show fellas. I'm just hoping we can get back to gigging so we can start using all this gear again.
Wow, live setup was great! Other than a few lags here and there in the stream, a really close approximation of a normal show, I'd gladly watch shows with this setup every week :)
Noooo.... One of my absolute highlights of the week...Friday after work...feet up . Fire up massive screen with projector, TPS and 5.1 on and after an hour all is well with the world.... but I cant watch the live streams on that system because the vid stutters the whole way through and the image quality is terrible compared to their normal shows.... and I would love to see a return to the old VCQ for the same reason... problem is they set the bar too high..😉
Whatever is best for you guys making the show. Cheers!
I’d really love to see the Duellist next to the JHS Double Barrel. Can’t find any of those online. Congratulations on a fantastic live show, guys!
It was probably the best playing you guys have done collectively. I guess if your not inspired pinging those pedals you’d be a nute. Great show awesome sound and it was live!!
Thank you! Yeah, Matchless and Two Rock, all the goodies... happy us! :0)
OMG I'm doomed.
Now I know I need a decent Les Paul and another 3 Pedals !
Have the Duellist already. Love it.
Great Episode btw !!! :)
Fully understand why you didn’t go “self-licking ice cream” for this comparo. That said, just got a D&M Label Maker and it’s replacing my KOT on my board. Much more useable for my playing.
I do really like that Protein though - esp with humbuckers - and, conveniently, my ODR 1 is acting funky... (and not funky in the musical sense...). Thanks for a great video!!
