    In my humble opinion, the A340-600 was the best plane ever build... I'm not talking about fuel consumption (which is not up to today's standards), but when it comes to safety and space. I always enjoyed flying with SAA or Lufthansas A340s.
    Talking about SAA - the service always has been excellent and the planes have always been kept clean and are well maintained.
    Thanks for the video!!

    I think part of the reason you powered away so quickly during the take-off roll is that as it was a short-haul flight, the tanks didn't have much fuel in the wings, thus drastically reducing the take-off weight of the aircraft. The same was true of the A380 when it was doing a tour of various cities in the world as a marketing stunt, and folks could have a short 30-minute circular flight in cities like New York. Because it was so light on fuel and had only ballast in the hold, it took only a small fraction of its normal take-off roll and accelerated faster than it normally does.

    • @jemand8462
      @jemand8462 Před 2 lety +1

      Usually the maximum thrust is adjusted for the weight and thus it's not really that different from a heavy airplane. Let's say MTOW is 100% N1, then 70% MTOW is maybe 80% N1. So not much more power really. The A380 however has crazy powerful engines, they were even reduced in power by software after the first flights.

      it is all a falsy that SAA is on its way back, few people know that when an airline stops flying a specific route for around 376 days that airline loses that time slot and must reapply for that route and it can take up to 10 years to get it back, how does bankrupt airline that's declared bankrupt in 2022 overnight reemerge solvent again---easy, because SAA is owned by the government taxpayers money is used to bail it out, billions are used to bail it out, to think a corrupt CEO of SAA sold the Jan Smuts Beijing route to Air china and India route for money, she received millions in return, to think SAA flew daily before 2020 the route Jan Smuts airport to Frankfurt and Munich and those flight were full booked, yes Airlink has bASICALLY TAKEN OVER, GOOD FOR THEM , I flew SAA back in July 2019 Munich jan smuts airport, what a pleasant flight, and quality of food and friendly staff, flight was full booked both ways, they flew SAu Paolo, Usa flights daily ,all are gone just because of corrupt ANC comrades

      Aircraft used from FACT -> FAOR due to large demand, and then from FAOR it flies long haul. So sort of a "pick up" from FACT, stops at FAOR to start its long haul. The same model is used by Lufthansa between EDDF and EIDW

    Here is the problem with South African Airways, it is a state owned airline so that means that when Jacob Zuma came to power he asked his fat corrupt friends,"Who wants to run an airline, do no work and earn all the money. So when you purchase a SAA ticket the money doesn't circulate back into the economy like it should it instead goes towards that fat CEO'S holiday fund, buying a new BMW or buying a big house. And for example the last bailout SAA received was R21.7 billion, the CEO will take say R20 billion and split it between himself, the president and other corrupt officials that are part of the little money making scam. So think before you fly SAA.

    • @mavhunguvincent
      @mavhunguvincent Před 4 lety +3

      Stop lying to other people the airline was destroyed in early 2000 by CEO called collin andrew, things became worse when it was unbundled from Transnet by Transnet CEO called Maria Ramos. Zuma found it dead

      Slade Wilson 1 He doesn't have to support Jacob Zuma or the ANC to provide names and facts. Your comment, on the other hand, was just speculative. SAA is in a lot of trouble, but the prior CEO wasn't exactly fantastic either. How convenient for you to ignore that. How do you know where exactly ZAR20 million went and how did you come up with that figure? Of course corruption was rife in SAA but how did you prove your numbers? Stop attacking strangers on CZcams and using political whining and just stick to the facts.

    I’ve flown a similar Saa 340-600 to JFK and Hong Kong. I found the business class seat spacious. The chairs could do with a little more cushioning. Pillow was too small for a wide shouldered 6 footer. That said, I find it reasonably easy to sleep on their long haul flights. On JNB-JFK I manage an average of 8 hours sleep! The Hong Kong flight maybe 6 hours.
    The crew is top notch. Very friendly cabin crew and the pilots are highly trained. Little wonder they’ve a solid safety record. I hope they emerge from business rescue stronger. It’s highly unlikely the government will allow SAA to fail as too many jobs from the airlines ecosystem would perish. Maybe 100k. It would be political suicide to shut it down. They only need to restructure, get a turnaround specialist with a strong aviation background and renew their fleet. Their creditors need to give them breathing space to allow investment in ops. The recent delivery of the 350-900 won’t harm its cause.
    As one of the world’s oldest airlines- 85 years old, it is worth saving.

    Had some big breakfasts in my time in the Joburg lounge en route to Durban or Cape when they flew Perth to Johannesburg. Found that lounge quiet and peaceful as opposed to say the Bidvest lounge which was a user pay area. One thing too about South African airports is that there's no announcements about boarding so keeping track of time is a must.

Sit in the one right at the front near the bulkhead and you've a couple of windows and loads of legroom. Only problem with doing that now is you'll fly in darkness, when I did it in September I fortuitously took off in the day, witnessed a jaw dropping sunset and landed as dark fell... if you book a ticket for sometime in March you will probably see the sunset also.
