Also turn road traffic off for now, otherwise they go across part of the runway further down.
Quite a few VOR beacons don't work properly in FS2020 - like DCS and OBA in the UK for example. No don't there are others. The software wasn't ready for release. Numerous errors
Good landing! I get the 'dont sink' voice warning only at KaiTak! (Same addon). Did you turn yours off somehow?
30 years ago I was doing this for real in a 747-200f, 106 approaches resulting in 103 landings, 3 go-rounds:- 2 off the checker board, 1 off short finals in XX rain
Airline?
Show off
106 approaches should have 106 landings no? or you diverted on those 3 go-arounds?

Having done this approach several times as First Officer or Captain between 1976 and 1998 with DC-10-30s and MD-11s respectively I feel like in a time machine with this incredible scenery!! Congratulations and thank you very much.😍👨✈️
Thank you Charles, nice to hear from someone like yourself. I can only imagine what that must be like to see it so clearly in a sim all these years later.
do you remember flying over the kowloon walled city (the really densely populated about a block or so from the airport?)
my dad was a northwest captain back in the 80s when it was Orient on the 747-200, he use to fly in and out of this airport on a bi-monthly basis depending on the schedules he would fly, back in those days i would ride with him as a guest in the cockpit as a kid. This is when nobody cared who was in the cockpit, they had 3 pilots. I tell you man those where the good ole days when the flight engineer use to have a cigarette in his hand and ashtray on the side showing me what selector does what during a live flight. Bottom line ill never forget that iconic approach landing into kai-tak almost pounding those buildings
I forgot how insane this approach was.
This approach is insane indeed.
Even if just studying the plan view and vertical profile, on the approach chart, before seeing this there's no other conclusion.
Thumb up for all the pilots who were qualified to fly the approach and land on Kai Tak when it was open.
I remember this approach when I was 7 years old on a 747 back in 1988 - you don't forget a childhood memory like that :)
8 and 12 for me, but yes, very memorable...in 83 there was a Lufthansa cargo 747 plane with a toasted nose year at the harbour end. Pretty sure we were load restricted taking off over the city.
I was 5 when you were 7 and I landed there many times as a kid. I thought it was fun. Haha
@@DLAU2886 Glad to hear your memories of HK back then. How changing it is now....quite sad
When you finally nail this landing it's the greatest feeling in Flight Sim and may I add; this was one fine greased Kai Tak landing if ever there was one.....beautiful ! Now, I would have loved to see this from an outside view ! Thanks, worth the time to watch !
As a flight Engineer with Flying Tigers took part in a few 747 approaches into Kai Tak, one on three engines. Actually could look into apartment windows ay eye level on the approach. There were a few accidents at Kai Tak. The departure could be hairy in bad WX as it was a radar controlled departure.
I used to live in one of those apartments in the 70s, weird looking at the passengers so closely
Me luckily everytime on 3 engines 😅
@@karaoke127 , The three engine app was a three engine ferry flight for engine replacement, to Kong Kong, it required the crew to be instructor/check airmen qualified.
I flew into Kai Tak on a QANTAS 747 in the jump seat in 1982. It was 'interesting' seeing buildings either side of the aircraft that were higher than us ...
Very interesting! Wish I could have seen it back then.
Beautiful landing
AMAZING LANDING! Damn, replay is sorely missed. I would LOVE to see that landing on every angle, from the numbers, from one of the buildings, you name it!
LOVE KAI TAK and am glad it is BACK for that AWESOME Approach :)
finally the real challenges have come beautiful landing
let's talk about this amazing landing.. the entire approach even absolute BUTTER
Butter smooth... Well done!
Heck ya man!!! Love it! Well done
Beautiful landing my friend
That was an Awesome landing!!
So cool! Thanks for the memories.
Sweet approach and landing
Killed it.😎Or should I say nailed it.
Way to butter the toast!!! Nice job!
Sweet landing!
That brings back memories.
Only one word, awsome !
Wonderful... thank you!
Daaamn that's a landing.
Watching this approach again, I can't believe it took until 1998 to get a new airport. This is straight insanity.
Thank you for letting me know about the addon!! Was disappointed the other day when I saw there has been a Hong Kong add-on on the marketplace... But they chose not to make a version with the airport probably every experienced simmer wants - Kai Tak 🤦🏻♂️
Nice😜 the only thing missing is the stench from the nearby nullah, some claimed it was the smell of money...
Nice!! I've always wanted to try this approach, But not skilled enough yet lol. Nice video BTW!!
Very well done!
this is one airport i like to play around in
smooth landing!
Such a fun approach. Did it alot in the SSTSIM Concorde. in FS9/2000 There is a IGS approach at JFK also thats fun to fly.
That's awesome! :D
Nice flying!!!
good landing!
Good job 👍
Kai Tak is brilliant
smooooth landing
Great job
Gotta have lots of experience to land at this airport and you have the experience 👍.
Thanks man did my best! Never had the privilege to try it before. The pilots that did it for real had to train in the simulator for a while before attempting in real life. The interesting thing is this was all through the era when graphics were not very good.
That was like a carrier approach. I was expecting him to call the ball at three quarters of a mile.
Nice job 👍
It's so cool this airport is back. I never got the chance to visit HK before China ruined the place. I know a few people who flew into Kai Tak though. Just sad I never got to experience it myself.
When I found out about this I asked my mom and dad about it (they lived in Hong Kong till the 2000s) and they said you could see the tv’s inside peoples houses
you should try using the Salty Simulations 747 mod, they have done a lot to improve it
You’re right, actually forgot about that mod!
The best game I've ever seen
Wow! I will have to get this! I remember sitting on the flight deck of a BA 747 into Kai Tak, was an amazing experience, I think I must have been around 15 at the time. Such a coincidence this came into my feed, I was meaning to look to see if this was available for a while now! Also tinkering with the VR update, very choppy even with a decent computer near cities, may have to upgrade to absolute latest graphics when available 🤔. Awesome experience though.
I have installed it tonight, it’s awesome! I will have to invest in the Hong Kong scenery next and hope my computer can handle it 🤔
Why are the engines of this plane sounds as my hoover...
When is there a descent soundpack for the 747-800?
Yeah the main engine sounds need something else. I like the touchdown sounds. Should start to see some sound packs eventually.
Awesome
Butter...
Excellent 👌 shame we didn’t have a replay
Nice Graphics
Greased it 👍🙏🏻❤️✈️
I lived a mile from kat Tak 1954 - 1964. We never got enough because the airport was 6 am to midnight. The giant planes would flew over the roof of our 4 story apt building. the whole building was shaking and window rattling all night.
Niceee flyyy
Yes it was a lot of fun.....and easy to get wrong.
I owned Flytampa kai tak 5 years ago and the scenery looks better and more realistic than the current one.
top das galaxias
Definitely a cool factor to this approach (in the real world) but I think some of the visual approaches into LGA are more challenging, and with a much shorter runway. The HKG terrain is cool though.
You have to come in at just the right angles and approach with the right slow speed to make this landing, man.
Back then I always pick the right side window seat going to Hong Kong so I will be in good position for a rwy 13 landing. Lived in few places that are visible only from the right side of the plane.
One thing they cannot quite simulate properly is the fogging up of the windows in the humid air of Hong Kong.
That’s one approach I would be upset if I couldn’t get a window seat for. Must have been quite the sight.
@@TheFlightSimDeck I grew up near there and a rwy 13 landing I can see my old places from the right side. It was quite a thing watching big planes going on finals in front of those tall hills.
@@TheFlightSimDeck Below the checkboard hill there is a public park there. To the west of it the approach lights are mounted on roof tops and on pillars. In that park there was a VOR station.. All hints of those are long gone after that many years. The VOR at Tung Lung Chau still there, Google streetview will show it.
Buttered it
How did you move the showcase camera which show the wing? Nice video :)
wow awesome flying dude!
Is that approach for real!??
ps ..great camera work
Thanks! Yes it used to be. They closed the airport in 98. The city was expanding and they started to think about the casualty risk. Here is the real thing: czcams.com/video/CJxbPY9uc5s/video.html
Did this as a passenger in an Emirates Boeing 777 back in 1996, was sat on the wrong side (ie the left) to get the best view of it though sadly!
Your i7 and 1080 don’t seem to have any issues running the sim. Looks amazing man!
They run pretty good together. It’s even slightly smoother live too. Happy with the combo so far.
Can I ask what graphics settings you are running the sim at? Nice landing BTW. Thanks for posting.
So real
Amazing video TFD, compliments for the landing! Any chance you share your (Nvidia) settings on your website? Happy landings and have a great (if possible) Christmas ;-)
Thanks Ed! I can sure, don’t think I’ve tweaked them yet with this rig though. Hoping to stream Christmas Eve, something with snow!
I’m no pilot but a passenger but I have a dumb question and hopefully someone can fulfill my curiosity:
Could autopilot handle the landing at Kai Tak?
what 747 mod is this as well as what compatibility you're using?
Why does it look like theres a lot of space to approach straight over the hills?
Nice landing! What tracking are you using and how do you like the use of it?
Thanks! I'm using Face Track No IR. Really like it, can't fly without it. Doesn't have to be that one, but some form of head tracking. They make a cell phone camera one too. I think it's free.
They really need to add more planes
Baby steps, there will be a day when we have a lot more. Took FSX a few years to get the PMDG.
nice vid but how do you move the camera inside the cabin view looking out over the wing?
Thanks! You can do it with head tracking or VR.
Why didn't they approach from the other side?
i remember this as a map in call of duty......
You're the only plane there and no cars. It must be the apocalypse.
Well it has been closed since 98 so kind of the apocalypse. Had to turn cars off until they fix it. Otherwise there is a stream of traffic going across the runway where a modern road would be.
@@TheFlightSimDeck Well, at least all the buggs in it look better than FS 2004. Other than that, no different. Even the 3k you have to spend on a PC and still not be able to max the settings.
with the b747 the papi lights should be 3 white and 1 red!
That is true. I think it was either the cockpit height or the length from the glare shield to the nose that makes it that way.
Nice destroyer in the water right to the runway, is it another addon?
I didn’t add it, not sure if it’s part of default or this package.
Nice landing! I am thinking about guying MFS. Should I go ahead and buy a proper stick for it or is the Keyboard/Controller controle also acceptable?
Thanks! I've used a mouse and keyboard in other sims just to see how it is, and it's not too bad. Actually wanted to be a video about that experience with this sim.
But I would recommend a stick. One of these two for starting out. Unfortunately MSFS caused everyone to inflated the prices. These both used to cost $40 and $60 before it was released.

@@TheFlightSimDeck The only sim game that I play is ETS2 and I need my full setup for that. I think I will see how MSFS plays with mouse and keyboard and if I enjoy the game a lot I will come back and check out your recommendations, thanks for that. :)
Correction is B747-*8/8i* there isn’t a -400 inside the game
Does it alter the buildings of the city to pre-1998 too ? Or just the cruise terminal / Kai Tak ?
I'm not sure actually, didn't see them beforehand. It's possible they added some or plan to. The checkerboard is gone these days I would assume?
I believe some of the taller buildings along the approach didn't exist back then. The checkerboard was left there and was not maintained, it is almost gone nowadays.
Hello, how did you manage to move the handle? because me it is the pedals that move (honrizontalement) suddenly the device is uncontrollable
thanks in advance
The throttle? Or which handle? I’m thinking your controls are dual mapped or mapped to the wrong thing.
I noticed in all of the MSFS videos people are posting, the yoke is not moving much from right to left. Is it because its not animated or the sensitivity is incorrect?
Good question. I know the 747 doesn’t take much deflection to turn but it does look a little off. I recall the yoke turning appropriately in the C172. Ill have to pay attention and test it now.
How do you do the different views like your in the passengers seat?
Under showcase camera they are there. Lower on the list are wing views.
Where's Kowloon Walled City?
Hey @The Flight Sim Deck! I Have X-Plane 11 but my specs are not enough to play MSFS. Are there any free scenery packs for Kai Tak airport for XP11?
Google is always the answer
There is this one. Needs a bunch of extra libraries though. They link them in the post

@@TheFlightSimDeck Thanks!
I just clicked on this video and started hearing final boss music for some reason....
I'm still trying to figure out every time I fly under a bridge I hit an invisible wall.
And sometimes one direction does it and not the other.
May I have your settings please? Outstanding performance! I have a 2080ti with a i7 8700@ 4.5 ghz and not getting smooth performance like you! Thanks!
Here are my settings:
www.theflightsimdeck.com/microsoft-flight-simulator
@@TheFlightSimDeck How are you getting smooth FPS? Do you think trackIR kills performance? I just can’t get a constant smooth FPS in the jets.
@@johncanillas8939 Seems like performance tanked a little bit after the VR update. This was a few days before that update.
Track IR can drop the FPS a little only because you're looking around more so it has to try and keep up with your view. But I don't think the app itself drops the frames.
How do you move around in the cabin? I only have fixed views
I was using head tracking software in both the flight deck and cabin.
how did you move the camera in windowed wing view?
Showcase camera mode and from there you will see a list of views. It's toward the bottom.
Can you imagine, back in the day when this airport was in use and you had to do your first real landing. Must have been a scary thing to do for a lot of pilots.
I was thinking about that too. Especially the regular trips in there. Waking up knowing that’s what you have to do today. I also heard there was a decent crosswind most of the time.
Question, which is more accurate this 747 8 from Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or PMDG’s 747 8? Kudos
The PMDG 748 by a lot. Which should eventually be making its way to MSFS. Or it’s possible someone will mod it to that level like what was done with X-Plane 11’s 738. They took what was a terrible simulation of the 737 and turned it into a version that surpasses PMDG, all for free.
I really like the a320 in msfs 2020 but the graphics card, cpu and ram could not support my pc specifications I prefer to stick fsx and add airplanes like from aerosoft for captain and FS labs for atpl.
PMDG aircraft cost more than the whole MSFS simulator by itself with a default 747 included of course its not going to be on PMDG's level just like any other default aircraft in the sim compared to the expensive payware counterpart. People need to stop comparing default to payware aircraft you are not getting that in a base 60$ sim PMDG aircraft are like 150$ and well worth the money if you want to invest in study level aircraft on your desktop.
@@fsx-legend4602 I compared Cessna 172 on FSX and the pay ware 172. If you’re looking on simple ones then freeware is good. But since I compared pay ware, its closer to the real one even performing a magneto drop level based in my experience on our local airport not just that even a carb heat is activated it can affect the rpm its closer on the real 172 even the cylinder compression test on a Cessna 172 can affect engine performance. Also the Pilot ‘s Handbook is similar on the real ones. Even my seniors ( instructors ) said its accurate however it is closer on the real one. The bad thing is when performing an engine start up there were no dispatch personnel near both wings in case for problems. Like oil leak from the engines, engine fire, FOD near the propeller pitot tube cover, chocks should be removed even navigation lights, strobe lights and beacon the dispatch personnel should notify the PIC. Although freeware can be fun because you can download without paying while pay ware needs to be bought.
great landing but i think you are supposed to come from the left, not the right. i was living in hk in 1992 so I know...
Yeah you fly the ILS down to the checkerboard. But the localizer doesn’t work yet so I had to eyeball it.
imagine if there's microburst
is this the old airport of hong kong??
Yep it’s the original. City just got too big along the way.
