250cc Moki P47 Razorback Maiden and Final Flight (1080HD)

- On 25 August 2018, this beautiful 1:4,5 scale P47 Razorback RC plane with a 250cc Moki engine and 30" 4 bladed mechanical variable pitch of between 12 and 14 degree had its maiden and final flight at Brits Radio Flyers near Brits in South Africa. Arno Janz took 2 years to build this beautiful plane. We are sorry for your loss Arno.

Thanks to the friends that was at this maiden flight for photos and videos that was given to me to use in this video. Unfortunately, I only had max 10min. in which to compact this video.

Very aggressive for a maiden flight.
A good maiden technique: get airborne, trim for level hands free flight, gain altitude test stall speed and characteristics, practice an approach or two, get back on the ground as quick as you can, take plane home and go through the entire thing with a fine tooth comb.
Had you flown a proper maiden (test flight), instead of flying the plane like it had flown successfully repeatedly, you would have put it on the ground safely and found the loose ignition pick up on the post flight inspection.
The maiden flight is the final stage of the building process. Ignoring that fact is very dangerous and has cost me, you, and many many others to lose planes way before their time.
Every time you crash, there is a lesson to be learned. This crash wasn't due to mechanical failure, it was due to an improper maiden flight. Learn from it, or repeat it. The choice is yours.
Couldn't agree more and have had the same outcome as him. It's just so much fun you lose track of how important it is to stay disciplined. Maiden's are for TESTING. It should always be a standard protocol, memorized, and followed thru. Tragic feeling, but like you said, hopefully he learns because that was truly a beautiful bird.
Wow, thats a fantastic piece of advice...I have watched this video before...beautiful model...and I was surprised to see it being flown so comfortably for so long on its maiden, with every body laughing and celebrating...found myself wondering what was going through the pilot's mind...and imagining with how I would be feeling! But now I can see exactly what is to be learnt as a valuable lesson...so thanks, both the the builder and pilot, for those beautiful ten minutes...and to Shelby for that perspective.
As you described a first flight, i did successful for decades of model flying! Couldn't agree more... 👍🏻
I agree, but anyway, watching the video, the pilot didn't seem to be prepared to deal with dead stick landing. Needs to keep calm, assess the situation, keep wings level as much as possible and manage the glide as efficiently as possible.
Agree but we don‘t see what he all did because of all the cuts. So i fly 3d Helicopters and different planes. Nitro and electr.
Maiden flights where always 2/3 of the time leveling,adjustments etc. BUT 1/3 i take the full out of the specific model. … why? Later i will do that too 😊 same with the planes …… as this is a warplane it was not extreme agressive flight. In my sight. Unfortunately with a bad end.
Master level scratch build. Well flown and magnificent scale sound too! Hurts to see it in pieces 😢

Damn, we R/C guys have all been there all be it with lesser planes, but it just breaks your heart when it happens. Hope you find the time and money to repair quickly. The sky looks better with this plane in it!

Sorry about the beautiful plane! But I have to point out that it's the obvious low-altitude stall (times two!) that broke the plane and not the engine failure. And stall is always a pilot error where I come from :) (the kind of planes where you sit inside) Hope you can put it back together to have another go.
after the accident, Arno who is the pilot went to check on the plane and saw that the wing hit an irrigation pole that was standing in the field out of sight, and that turned the plane side ways and saved the motor on impact. The motor is worth in the region of R80k. That is a lot of money. Fortunately the motor is now installed into another plane and is working fine. Thanks.

I lost my beloved Cessna 182 earlier this year. I was so depressed afterwards. I know the feeling. My crash was due to a faulty battery pack and the control surfaces locked me into a nose down left spin. During the 8th flight I was helpless as my scale plane corkscrewed into the ground from 200 ft. Good news: I found another Cessna 182 to build and she's almost done!

Devastating!!!!!! All the money and time to assemble that magnificent model gone in a heartbeat. Nothing left to do but get back up. Brush yourself off and assemble another one!!!!

Just watched the Corsair video as well. This dude has some nice planes! We recently lost two equally nice CY Skyraiders at out club just a couple weeks apart. One for unknown reason leaving a pile of gibbles and the other from elevator failure. The loss of one of these models hurts!

@@dirkvanderbank7019 The one that nothing was left was able to salvage the retracts at least since they were up at the time. They are now going into the big 97 in CY P-40. Most of the stuff from the second plane is going into another CY Skyraider. The issue is this one that crashed was a custom painted 665 Commemorative plane since he is friends with the owner of the real one here in Tn. He's is now just finalizing the build of the stock camo version which isn't nearly as nice. These are fellow club members planes, not mine. I cannot afford to build one of these monsters. Mine is a smaller Seagull Model 63 inch.

Hi, no Arno is not going to rebuild the crashed plane. A coupling came loose. Arno intended to Loctite the unit, but forgot to do so, and with vibration, the coupling came loose. The lesson is, when you need to do something special, lice to Loctite a coupling or screw, rather do it when you think about doing so, instead of thinking to do it at a later time. Usually you forget about that little thing you needed to do. Expensive lesson. Use blue Loctite so that you can undo it later if you need to.
What happened ? Radio failure or engine stall certainly not pilot error with all his experience
Oh Scheiße, das tut mir voll leid für dich. So ein geiler Flieger und dann passiert etwas weil die Zündung spinnt. Ist mir vor einigen Wochen mit meiner 2,2 extra auch passiert, Motorabsteller und dann Bruchlandung.

That's a crying shame, only one small glitch to destroy a nice model. I hope you can rebuild her back to flying status.

That blows was a nice P47...
Very sad to see this beautiful plane crashes. But one question, how do you know the ignition pick up came loose?
Fortunately on impact, the plane went in wing first and that saved the motor. The pick up was hanging loose on a wire. After testing the motor a few days later, it started again and was running 100%. Arno was very glad that it was still working fine and running fine. He will test it a lot before using it again. Regards Dirk. I only made the video.

The pilot inspected the plane. That was his finding. Fortunately the motor survived. It is now used in the Red Bull Yak 54.

Time and again you see people flying too far from home during a maiden. Anything can and usually will happen at any time. Not saying you wouldn't have crashed but you would have least had a shorter ride back.
Yes, I think the fun in flying the P47 was too much. A shorter flight would have been the best option.

I learned to avoid those situations before building scale models that aren't forgiving.
Usually see this with P38 twins, tearing the sky up on maiden test flight.

That was painful.
I would never invest 2 years of time and a buttload of money to watch it all go up in flames...Thank God for my cheap little foamies that i can crash again and again and again while spending minutes to get them repaired and in flying order once again

I could not see from the video thst any landing configuration flying was done ie wheels down,1 notch flaps and aerie trimmed to fly slow handsfree ready to land .The stall was never tested at a safe alltutude.Pilot onduced stall.

Good day, the pilot still had to get to that point. I think he got carried away in the joy of flying the plane. A power connection linkage cable vibrated loose, which caused a dead stick situation. The plane was too far away to make the runway. It crashed in a farming field. On impact, one of the wings clipped an irrigation pole, which turned the plane sideways. That saved the radial motor. The motor was fitted into another plane. The motor is still running. Cheers.

IMO a Maiden Flight should never be more than the time to get her trimmed and then on the ground. To many things can be wrong with a new build. That first check-up would have found this if you had done this.
Yes, I agree. Apparently Arno intended to put Teflon rape on the thread, but forgot to do so. Pilot error. Expensive lesson.

Wing definitely stalled out, plus a sudden nose up attitude right after made it worse. So sad.. what a beautiful equipment 😞
