I can't emphasize buying physical enough for budgetary purposes. Even if you don't plan to resell your games in the near future, plans change and your tastes may change too. I was happy to sell of most of my games a few years back to help fund my wedding.

Shes so right about Demos, I love final fantasy, but when FF7 Remake first came out, I was very on fence. After 10 mins into the demo I was having a blast, and immediately purchased.
Obviously that's a very high profile game, but demos are a way to practically guarantee you will enjoy it. On the smaller flip side, some game really do take time to get good. I'd say some of the Tales games are like this, the fun generally is amazing once you invested X amount of hours. Tales of Beseria was a good example for me, now favourite Tales game ever.
A controversial opinion, I didn't enjoy DQ11 and paid full price for it, so demos save major cash.

Great tips! An extra one that I do is I have an excel sheet called wish list where I write down whenever I see or hear of a new game that sounds fun and there I can look at my "backlog" without having to actually buy them right away unless I plan to play it right away, cuz let's be real the digital inventory is just a list of games lol It makes my brain feel like "yeah, it's on the backlog, I've put it on the list!" and then I can look over the list when I actually wanna buy something. My tastes also change so sometimes I delete things off of it after a few months or years. Great way to not spend money on games I might end up not playing

Before buying a game I recently started asking myself if I want to play the game right now and if the answer is no I can always get it later digitally or physically whether or not it goes on sale. I also prefer to focus on one game that lasts at least 60-100+ hours instead of getting multiple short games.

  • @samuelc6246

I use Deku Deals wishlist and set a very low price for every game that I want. I get surprise mails more than enough telling me some games I want are below my set price (often lower than 5€). I use different regional accounts as well, and compare. And I buy some games physically that I really want, after making (reasonably) sure I picked the cheapest option from different stores, and most of these games are budget games already because I have more interest in those games most of the time. Especially if they come with manuals :D
I stopped collecting like crazy like I used to, and it literally enabled me to buy a cabin in the woods, and a small farmhouse with plenty of land in the mountains tostart an off grid on, and an old camper to travel with my pack of big rescue dogs. In all fairness, I didn't JUST stop collecting games, I stopped spending like crazy to cope with the "modern" slave life, after quitting the slave life and embracing "poverty" - ironically making me richer than I ever was.

Wish listing is probably the main reason I do have such a bloated backlog (Deku Deals is dangerous). I've saved a lot on what I would have spent on certain games (often 50%-75%+ off most indies/third parties, 30%+ off most Nintendo Titles), but at the same time my wish listing often casts too wide of a net and I end up buying lots of things I would have just forgotten about completely and never purchased otherwise. That said, it is nice having a big library, because even if you don't play everything in it, you will always find something that you want to play on hand.

    • @DMGamanda
      @DMGamanda Před rokem +1

I had the same issue so every month i go back in and i review my wish list. So many times i think why did i even add that. Or there has been more info out on the game. That why i keep my wish list to no more than 15 games. Cos as you say otherwise you just end up with this crazy wish list. Hope I’m not stating the obvious here but just sharing as i had same issue.
I actually just went in to my switch Wish List last night and had a massive cull as it had crept up to over 25 games. I’ve now got it down to just about 10. There were just so many on there really when I looked hard that were either so similar to things I already had that just wasn’t any point or actually now had little videos and I was like umm not so sure that them now et cetera et cetera so I was able to really be very strict with myself, and cut it right down.
      Anyway, good luck, Amanda:-)

Great video ! So much nostalgia about how we'd get only a few games per year when we were kids! I used to borrow/lend some games from/to Friends and still do. On Switch at least, I find that the end of the year has massive sales (before, during and After black friday, same for christmas but Also After !) It helps me get the games I'm hesitant to pay full price normally (cos the reviews are very différent from One reviewer to another).
Also physical copies of games at supermarkets (I live in France) are 20% off compared to the eShop and specialized games stores.

Like I have stardew valley as farming, Mario maker 2 and kirby as platforming, All zelda games, Pokemon Arceus as my only Pokemon game. The games I regret the most I bought due to hype and lack of research those are POOT and Disney Dreamlight Valley. DDV is too micro transaction heavy for it to be in early access. It just rubs me wrong.

I am addicted to buying new games it seems and increase my backlog. So I made huuge list in notepad of all the Switch games, PS plus and playstation games, PC games across Steam, Origin and EA and made it structured so I know what is my top 10 to play games next.
I definitley suffer from too many games to choose from but I have clear road ahead of me.
    1. Legend of heroes games (all of them to get ready for Trails into Reverie release in July)
    2. Xenoblade Chronicles series (I own 1 and 2 so I have to buy Torna and 3, rip my wallet lol, also Torna seems to be impossible to get physical)
    3. the first party Playstation games from PS Plus Premium like Horizon Forbidden West etc.

I went from wanting to own a console and my parents not buying me one for many years, to having one but not enough games, where I had to play the same one for months before I got a new one, to just the right amount, to too many, and to overwhelmingly many now.
Most of the ones I've bought and not yet played were purchased for good prices. I no longer buy anything gaming related on day one, because the times I have I've felt it wasn't worth it and right now I have no shortage of games to play.
Yes, online social interaction has made me more prone to be influenced to buy games that back in the day I wouldn't have given a chance because I was afraid of wasting money on one I wouldn't like. There are so many games that I wish I had given a chance back in the day, now that I have good information on them.
I have a rule not to spend more than $15 ($20 in extreme cases) on a digital game, because I don't feel like I own my digital games and can't resell them like you said. Reselling is definitely a good way to play more on a budget if you're not necessarily a collector. I do purchase a lot of second hand physical games if they're in good condition. New games, it has to be on sale and for like a rare "new low" clearance price, not the periodic every two month sales which are always the same. You might as well consider those the "real" price.

Don't buy on the release date except if your planning to play it soon. 2. when buying brand new game try to check other stores or websites to get best price. 3. Pretty much 1 AAA game a month for me. I do think the availability of Gamepass and PSPlus has changed my buying habits. I don't mind having 3 games going at a time now, 1 purchased and 2 from service. I don't feel that pressure of making sure it's something I'm absolutely going to spend 100 hours on anymore. If I'm nervous about reviews on a game, I can wait until it's released on a service or heavily discounted. It's really a great time to be gaming!

Since I've started following youtubers, I've discovered a lot more games, which has resulted in me buying 2-3 games per month, while it takes me two months to play and finish a game. So my backlog has been growing steadily the last two years. I do try to buy most of them on sale, so I guess I spend around €50 per month on average.

I work it out by saying if it cost X and i played for Y number of hours and that works out to £2 or less per hour then i am happy. For eg people were complaining that Cereza game was so short and yet i got nearly 40hrs out of that game.
Also like you i put all my games in a wish list - ps5 and switch. I check my switch almost daily as the sales change so fast there and PlayStation notifies you if any items on your wishlist are on sale.
I also have started not ordering until i know will actually play game as i realised that so often in excitement of launch i would buy game and then end up not playing it for ages by which time it might have gone on sale.

Being ~$400, you *could* buy a lot of Switch games, but with my Steam Deck, I have sooo many free games from emulation (like N64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, PS2, PS3, Switch, etc).
I can also pirate PC games instead of buying from Steam (I don’t, but I have that option).
And then when there r sales on Steam store, there’s big discounts on many games like 50%, 75%, 90% off. I got a few for less than $5/$10/$20
So yeah, point is while it’s not exactly “budget friendly”, it has saved me a lot of money & will keep saving me money in the long run.

The only games that I pay full price for are the limited release games, and I usually pre-order those. I have over 1000 games in my collection, and my backlog is a bit insane. I also don't play any sports, strategy, or simulation games, so that saves me a bit. I do regret buying a couple of games that friends talked me into, like borderlands and the avengers, and now I don't buy a game unless I actually want to play it.

It can be over 100 a month pretty easily. Maybe not every month. Its mostly indies across all platforms. I purchase new games too, but mostly beat and resell those. I may buy them back later when the console dies out. Im also heavily into emulation with a full set up. Anything that becomes emulated up to my standard eventually gets sold, including the old consoles and games.

The last game I paid retail for on release was Final Fantasy VIII in 1999. It was fun at the time and I enjoyed it, but it didn't match VII. I grew up buying most of my games used in pawn shops or game shops. I agree that sales are so common now, there's no reason to purchase a game new. If you want the absolute best value, pick up some Xbox live credits and convert them to Xbox Gamepass ultimate credit. I got about 3 years of Gamepass ultimate for around $75 using this method.

I've personally found it both cheaper and more expensive to game on PC (not including the price of my computer, which is an older laptop at the moment, but mostly serves me as a workhorse for my engineering studies).
Steam frequently has INSANE sales. I've gotten AAA titles with all the DLC, GOTY packages and all for 80% off. Anywhere from $10-$20 instead of $60-$80+.
the problem is, I can't predict WHEN things will go on sale, so I've also spent $200 in the space of a week, because everything went on a really good sale (I almost never buy a game on Steam unless its 60%+ off. Typically I aim for 75-80%). But this was countered by the fact that I didnt buy another game for almost 7 months, as I was too busy with studies, and the multiple games I had bought that one week.
I've got a large Steam library of games, and I don't think I've paid full price for any of them. Certainly, not anything that's normally $30+.
If you have a decent PC, Steam can save you a ton of money if you're willing to be patient, and pass up a 25% or 40% sale. Just wait, and it'll eventually go on a 60% or 80% sale.
U&nfortunately, it does mean that I rarely play games that are newer than 3 years old (with the exception of indie games), but tbh, there's not much good stuff out there that interests me (on PC at least, I can't afford a switch, and certainly not a switch and a bunch of nintendo games)

Since I got back into gaming I've been on a crazy shopping spree, multiple consoles and games that are expensive titles. So that's not the "normal" but I think 1000 Swedish kronor or a 100 bucks if I have need for games. Right now I have such a large "to play list" of games I wanna finish so I don't see the value of spending more money for a while... I don't like having a large backlog of things to play, but I fell into my greed and now I'm in that pit.😅 Ha det gott

Don't let your backlog greater than 3 games! Force yourself to play through those games. by the time you play through those games you should be able to buy some aaa games for half the price that you were eyeing up when you started those 3 games. Plus, a lot of brand new games aren't even finished completely for 3 to 4 months after they are released so why not wait. So am I going to get diablo 4 day 1? I would love to but they are going to be rebalancing that for months if not years. I am going to wait until black friday or boxing day to see if I can pick it up for 30 to 40 dollars off! Hope this helps someone stretch a few more dollars out of there hard earned money. Have fun.

I have a switch and steam deck. Mostly I put games on steam wishlist and wait for them to go on sale. There are a few I paid full price for like Hogwarts legacy and switch games in the beginning. If I can get the game on steam I prefer doing that because games are usually cheaper. As for how much I spend it depends. I spent around 500 dollars on the steam Christmas sale that is because I got a birthday gift card that helped. During the spring sale I spent around 200 dollars. I watch reviews first before I buy anything unless something looks good on steam then I will buy it if the price is good.
As for regrets I bought playstation 4 games and kind of wish I hadn’t bought the console or the games because I rarely touch it.

I used to buy games which are onsale online for ps4 but then as years went by, i regret it because i only played them once for few hours or few minutes because i couldn’t really get it into (maybe not really my thing). So now that i have ps5, i only buy physical and latest games that i know i will really play and i plan to sell them when im done and move on to new games. I also have nintendo switch and play mostly first party games and went with physical. I buy used games and when im done i resell them. Sometimes i even get to sell them higher than i bought like i bought it for $50 and played through it then i resell for $60. This is only true for first party games though. Because im also busy with life and work i dont have much time playing so i only buy games when i only have 1 or 2 games backlog. I also only buy latest games because i find old games controls are clunky and i couldnt get into them. Saved me time and money.

I buy the collector's edition for any games that I like, so long as the CE is decent. I therefore spend a little too much! But then again, it brings me joy, so it's fine. I probably average £50-200 per month, depending on what's coming out, and whether I need to pre-order it or if I can buy it when it's discounted.

It can sometimes be a pain buying a physical copy only to sell it when you’re absolutely done with the game (as in getting every achievement for it) because… who would want to sell good cover art and other paraphernalia inside the disc case? Keeping the physical copies (including Steel Disc Cases) definitely shows its sentimental value.😅
