I agree, you do feel a lot of pressure with challenges. I never seem to finish them.
Totally agree and good advice. Who needs the pressure? Some days you just don't feel creative and also life happens in between. xx
Deborah Carter exactly!
I love how she turned out, she has the look of a warrior to my eyes! I've tried for 3 years to do Inktober and other challenges but I always end up feeling bad about myself so I don't try anymore. I just do what I usually do, and if I happen to fulfill a challenge with one of my pieces then yay! Please don't beat yourself up, at the very least you have a few paintings that may not have gotten done before, and you have a nice watercolor sketchbook to play in! Take care and thank you for sharing! 😀👍
Michael Ann F. Yes I get so bad about myself! I have, however, managed to paint about 20-30 small log slices now if that had been inktober I would have managed! I think there is something hardwired in my brain that if someone else is pressuring me (even tho they aren’t!) I resist somehow, or I am not as motivated as I am when I just do my thing.
So true i know some artists dont do prompts but do themes instead so sea creatures or bugs etc this makes it a lot less pressure 😊❤
I don't like to follow prompts. I find it a great stumbling block if you can't think of an idea. I would love to see more of your videos here on CZcams I have enjoyed watching all your previous ones. ❤
Carol Rigby thanks carol ! Aiming to try for more videos!
I think, for me anyway, lots of the problems you talk about were learned in early education - teacher holding up examples of other people’s work, finishing a task in a certain amount of time, following “rules” exactly, etc. Those things are like dumping water on the creative fire. When we finish 12 years of mandatory education we should spend an equal amount of time UNlearning some of those destructive habits.
Lynn Duvall yes I think you may be right!
LMAO I love your honesty about these challenges. I marvel people that achieve them and I too wonder how they make so much time per day to do particularly detailed pictures!
Inktober was a massive fail for me too Lucy, I think I managed the first week. Hey-ho!
Jillian Daly haha! It seems a lot of us had a similar experience! You managed more than me!
Hi lucy
Gave up on challenges ages ago as I couldn’t deal with “failure”. the only one I do now is Dundee’s January Fun A Day which doesn’t have prompts but does do an exhibition at the WASPS studios. low key and totally optional.
Fiona Scharlau ooh that sounds like fun! Yeah I’ve realised challenges stress me out!
I have spent years on design teams as a colourist and the stress and pressure is horrendous and your doing it for free ,if you don’t manage one you get told off..yep,I understand..just do your own thing it’s not worth all the stress 😀
Hi Lucy. I have to agree with you. On the one hand I have learnt so much from other artists on social media, but then the self comparison kicks in and I usually end up freezing up and not creating anything at all. I feel it has to be related to our own sense of self. At the end of the day some people will like what we do and some won't, and this is how it has always been and will in the future. I like your work by the way lol :-) Marion
Marion Wigzell thanks! Yes freezing up is the way to describe it for sure!
Thank you for being so honest. You express my thoughts and feeling about pressure and comparison. That being said, I would love to learn how to use watercolor and watercolor pencils together in a painting. Can you help with that??
yes I shall put it on my list!
