I think it is the first time I watch an English TV show, I normally let subtitles in English show on the screen [my native language is Arabic], I keep subtitles on so in case there is a word I don't understand I go and translate it. I believe I understood 80% without needing to translate new words.

I know ! However even in Korea, this series is recommanded for intermediate level. Instructors think it's "doable without sweating" for them. I read that labelling TV series or cinema with specific level isn't much efficient. We can learn some formal vocabulary and expression in animation considered for elementary by linguistic experts as well, you know.

How did Downton Abbey not make the list? I loved it and would recommend it to any of my friends who want to start watching British productions without synchronization. Especially since in synchronization the accents do not survive, at least in the German translation, even though in German there would be tons of accents to choose from.

Hi Lucy, I've discovered your channel a month ago and I've become a huge fan of your work! We are from Argentina.
My daughter started watching Peppa Pig when she was 2 years old, and since I couldn't stand the Spanish accent of the translated version, she starting watching it in english (also because in english, she would find many more episodes!). She then continued watching movies and many other cartoons and series in english. And she is now bilingual, at the age of 7. She has a perfect pronunciation... I'm amazed at how the method you are suggesting really works!

    What about Downton Abbey?
The people from ‘upstairs’ speak with RP and most of the servants have Yorkshire accents. And there is also someone with an Irish accent (Tom) and someone with a Scottish accent (Mrs Hughes).
And the show is just awesome and very entertaining and I’d really recommend watching it especially because of Maggie Smith’s character.
Good Omens is also really great and as Broadchurch it also stars David Tennant and a lot of Queen Songs are in it. It’s also absolutely hilarious and intriguing.
Another show I’d recommend is Fleabag! It’s funny and about daily topics and the main character is really relatable.
And I definitely need to watch Broadchurch now, I didn’t know it stars David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker AND Olivia Coleman.
If you want to have an American accent I’d recommend watching Friends, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, any Star Trek series or Grey’s Anatomy. Or if you are into that sort of stuff, The Bold Type or The Marvellous Mrs Maisel.
You could as well watch Killing Eve for lots of different accents.
For movies I’d definitely recommend the Harry Potter films! And The Favourite!

I remember when I watched Sherlock for the first time, I couldn't keep up with Benedict at all. It was back on 2014, and it was my first year of learning English properly. At first it made me feel bad about myself, as if I wasn't good enough or I wasn't doing enough. But when I calmed down, I looked at it as a challenge. Now I can proudly say that I've watched the whole show multiple times and I love it. It's brilliant!
I would also recommend Peaky Blinders. I'm absolutely in love with the show, especially the accent. Before watching the show, I believed that RP is the most beautiful accent. As it turned out, I was wrong! The Birmingham accent is just something amazing. And obviously writing and acting is superb.

Thank you very much! I love all your recommendations, really great choice of programmes. I just wanted to chip in with a comment about "pre-int" level. I adore David Attenborough and his work; but I was astonished when you mentioned that his programmes are relaxing. I wept all through "Our Planet" and "Plastic Ocean" and was aghast at the damage the humanity is causing. He makes you question your life and your choices, which is all but relaxing. It's heartbreaking to watch his latest works. Don't get me wrong, these documentaries are eye-opening and ground-breaking; David Attenborough changed my life completely and I agree that the language is very accessible. I just can't get my head around your words about how calm and relaxing the documentaries are... I was all tense and crying. I admit, I haven't watched his earlier works and maybe you were mostly referring to them, but the ones I did see overwhelmed me to the point of losing my sleep at night.
I am not making any reproaches, not at all. You are a wonderful ray of sunshine for me, I love you videos and truly appreciate your help to us, learner of English. But I couldn't help myself, I felt compelled to speak out here.
