  • In this GIMP 2.10 starter guide for beginners, I go through the common GIMP features and GIMP general information beginners typically want to know when they are first starting out with GIMP. Plus, I give an overview of the current state of GIMP, and what GIMP actually is!
This is a great starting point for photo editors or graphic designers whom are completely new to GIMP and want a quick overview of how to use the program before they fully dive in.
I go over the 5 main sections of GIMP, the 4 different types of tools found in GIMP, how to open, save, and export images in GIMP, and how to download GIMP.

So, yeah, it's September of 2020 and still no 3.0. I was wrong about the timeline for 3.0 in this video. My guess (since there is no real, concrete timeline for GIMP 3.0's release) is that GIMP 2.10.22 (the confirmed next new version of GIMP at the time of this comment) will be released by end of October 2020, while GIMP 3.0 won't see the light of day at least till 2021. I would say mid-2021 is the most realistic, if not the latter half of 2021.

N00b-question: is there a feature that allows me to use a layer as a stencil?
If so what´s the name? I´ve tried to find something, but without the right term, it´s difficult to find.
My idea is to use a black and white image and e.g. use the white spots only to edit the layer below, like spraying on a real-life stencil.

My question is, before I consider downloading Gimp, can it help you fix photos that were on a digital frame (Pandigital frame to be exact from like 17 years ago) where like 5 years ago 14 of the 73 pics on it, the color on half of each of the pics was suddenly distorted?? I loaded these pics onto my laptop a few days ago. These are both B/W and color family photos anywhere from the 1940s to the '90s

I started with you since I could not find a source for learning the extremely complex Paint Shop Pro. As I used this program, I would accidentally click something ( taking a fraction of a second ) and then have to sometimes spend hours undoing the action so that I could continue working and UN-corrupting the thing I was working on. They publish a new version every year, so that it is practically impossible to research how to fix stuff ( version 6 fixes do not work on version 2018, for instance ). There are no basic ground-up instructions ( as with gimp ) to help you simply learn WHAT stuff does.

when I fill some area with the bucket tool, say I use color ff0000 (a red color).
When I then use the eyedropper to check the color which I just filled the area with, it doesn't have the ff0000 color (instead fc0d1b)
For my project it is absolutely vital to use the correct RGB colors so I don't understand why the colors I fill with aren't the ones that show up.

Hi, there. For the longest time, my rotate dialogue box was automatically detached from the canvas. As soon as I clicked to rotate, it'd pop up, the angle automatically highlighted.
Now it suddenly doesn't. And when I'm trying to rotate about 500 images 30 degrees each way, that's a lot of extra mouse clicks and really slows the process down.
Would you know how to toggle Gimp so that a tool box (such as rotate) is detached by default?
    Thanks.

New subscriber here! Thank you so much for these awesome tutorials. I was wondering if you had a tutorial that would help me with resizing photos? Many thanks again!

Thanks for subscribing! You may want to check out my tutorial on scaling images without quality loss (czcams.com/video/Qk3BP8vzPdY/video.html) or my 2 hour GIMP Basics tutorial (czcams.com/video/2EPIUyFJ4ag/video.html) - one of those should help you out! The latter video that I linked has an index in the description where you can jump to the part of the video where I talk about the scale tool.

My colour palette is no longer selecting the right colour? Whenever I use it to select a colour, it only displays white? Is there a way to fix this because I've tried resetting to default settings and nothings worked? Please help!
